It all clicked when you said that plant-based calories count. Calories are calories. I needed to hear this! I am so guilty of stuffing myself with broccoli… I too came from restriction and constantly counting calories so when I even heard that you can eat as much as you want.. I thought I was in Heaven. CLARITY

I have been eating whole food plant based for 14 months and have taken off 33 pounds. The 20 more pounds that need to come off are stubbornly refusing. I am tuning into hunger and fullness cues. At 60, it's much harder to remove weight than at 40! Calories are calories; it takes a calorie deficit to remove weight, and I definitely cannot eat as much as I want! Thanks for the video.

Could you possibly do a video about "abusing" vegetables for people like me who accidentally took the calorie density way of eating to the extreme by eating TONS of vegetables to feel full and not enough starch? I feel like now even when I am eating foods like potatoes/50 50 plates, etc. I have conditioned myself to need ENORMOUS quantities to feel full.

Thanks for another great video!! For sure! I learned the hard way that weight gain on plants can so happen. I think following a particular doc who tells us to eat 1 lb raw and 1 lb cooked non-starchy veg each day is what stretched out my gut and started me on this volume eating thing. Later, after gaining some of that weight back on Starch Solution, I heard a certain chef repeat the same stuff message. Or at least that's what I heard those two authorities say. Anyway, I discovered that I often mistake anxiety or stress for hunger. Now, I eat a small portion slowly (at a table, chewing thoroughly, and using no electronic or print media) and then eat more if I'm still hungry. I never eat past satiety when eating slowly. I don't automatically get up and eat in the morning, often finding that hunger doesn't occur until 10 or 12. I get up at 4 or 5. Also, I keep my plate about 50% non-starchy veg just in case. Finally, I tried a version of carrot cake oats but substitute yellow zucchini for the banana. It's delicious; thanks for the idea. So, my gut is so much happier without all the stuff and bloat going on. Thanks again for making videos to which I relate.

“”Clarity”” This is so true about satiety and stopping to eat when no longer hungry. Sadly, It is an issue with a lot of people for sure as we don’t treat food as we supposed to. We seem to constantly have to fill ourselves up to our necks even when our body is shouting at us to STOP 🛑. we need to pay more attention to its clues. Thanks so much Emmie again for a wonderful reminder. Keep making these videos! 👍😊

I think the answer to this question can be yes if you eat the right type of foods. So if you’re hungry there’s always “something“ that you can eat and not gain weight even if it’s a plate of sliced cucumbers. Now you could say that you could eat enough cucumbers to gain weight but reasonably nobody would do that.... so I’m talking from “a reasonable person can find food to eat all they want of“, point of view. You can’t just eat any food you want unlimited though. And I’m saying that as a biologist.

What are the hunger signals? How do I know I am full or if I am stress/boredom eating? Why do I feel I need to eat between meals - is it hunger or emotional eating?
My biggest question is .... How much food should be on my plate? e.g. a spoon of rice or a ladel of rice with equal amount of veg on the other side (50/50plate)
For breakfast, how much raw oats? - I normally do 5 tablespoons - cook in micro with water, then sprinkle berries and banana. I have this around 10am and by noon I am hungry. When I first started, it did fill me for most of the day, but lately I find I am hungry. Am trying to work out if it is emotional or hunger

Hi Nancy! I’m Reading this only today, anyway as a vegan from 11 years and a molecular nutritionist I could give you some advices, anyway if you need I know that Emmie offers a call and could give you better answers🥰
      1) if you’re not really hungry you could just go for a cup tea, maybe add just a splash of soy milk (few calories but a lilly bit of something in) and wait 10 15 min, then see if you’re still hungry then eat
      2) not everyone can go no food between meals, it depends on how much you eat in your meals and also how much you’re consuming in between because of your lifestyle.. so as before go slowly, drink something and see what happens, maybe you could even take with you a bit of low calorie veggies, like celery and fennel, eat a bit of them and wait.
      3) for the portion as an Italian I would say take a normal plate, I don’t know it in America you do have bigger plate too, but for a normal italian plate which is 23 cm big, just fill half of the plate and even a bit more with no starchy veggies, then for the other half you should have a quarter of stachy carbs, do not pile up, just fill that quarter, and the other quarter with legumes, again don’t pile up. Then add a little bit of fats, be conscious about them, and the work is done.
If you fill the need to have super strict measures (for which there’s nothing wrong with) just book a visit with Emmie or any other specialist. They’ll measures your BMI, muscles mass etc.
      I hope it helped 🥰

@@francescasca3939 Thank you for your reply. I sort of worked it out. By pure accident the other day. I am not having enough protein, so for breakfast I now add 3 tablespoons red lentils (cook them first). This now fills me up.
I am just going through a lot of personal stress at moment, and am not being too hard on my body. Being in my 60's my body cannot handle stress of diet and the upheaval I am going through at same time. I know that I am now eating due to stress, as my tummy is very bloated. Once stress level drops (hopefully another month) I will no longer stress bloat and feel less inclined to eat or be hungry. I have just been strict with the food kept in the home - only correct foods - and make a point of eating protein at every meal - that fills me up beautifully with the carbs.
By protein I mean legumes, and carbs - rice, potatoes or pasta. I do not worry if I go for a 2nd plate of food. I also do not want to eat between meals - because that is where the danger happens.
Thank you for your kind advice. I really appreciate it

Thx so much for this…I am a high volume eater and trying to pay attention to my hunger and fullness cues. I am also weight training and trying to lose that last bit of weight about 10 stubborn pounds. I work out 5 days a week and I am 48 years old. Being post menopausal makes it just a little more difficult for me to break through this plateau! I easily lost the first 45 and now at past my original goal, I just want to get as lean as possible! Trying to find that balance while trying to build muscle…wanting to feed muscle, but reduce calories and always feel as if I’m eating so much! I was a calorie counter in the past and hated it! I’m trying to listen to my body! Thx for the simple tips! CLARITY!!

I've been eating like this for just a few days. For me it was just taking out overt fats and a couple of minimally processed items and adopting the 50:50 plate. Too soon to see results but I'm noticing I'm getting trough the afternoon without a snack attack or a dip in energy. It is also easier to stop when full when there are less rich foods.

Clarity. I have a question if that's okay: what about people who have no prior history of starvation but have still binged on all foods, even healthy ones, for years. You say kids don't stuff themselves silly...well, I did. I would literally eat until I was sick. I've been doing this since the age of about seven, and I don't understand why. I'm vegan for the animals and do my best to follow a WFPBD, but I can binge on absolutely anything and everything, including vegetables. It's ruined my life - I have IBS and the consequences of eating so much are severe. I have no trauma, there was no emphasis placed on weight when I was a kid. I had no awareness of my size and yet I would still just eat and eat and eat. I would literally cry at school if the teacher let us out to lunch late because I couldn't wait to eat. No matter what else is going on in my life, I count down the seconds until I can eat again, even if I'm busy to the point of being snowed under. I've been to so many therapists about this and no-one can solve it. They all just say I'm lying and I should eat more (facepalm) but I have no off switch and no upper threshold with food. I just don't know what to do 😞 Outside of my problems, your hair looks absolutely freaking gorgeous in this video.

Hmm... I've been whole food vegan for a couple years now. Still I have to be careful. I can't eat a lot of avocado, russet, sweet potato, legumes, farro, barley, wild rice. Not more than 12 to 15 nuts in a day. Those foods create portion control issues because they're my favorite. Knowing they are higher in calories than greens, keeps me in check. Therefore I have to say, somehow, someway counting calories is probably being done in most peoples minds without it being obvious to them.

Hi Katherine! I’m seeing this message only now, it’s not Emmie, but as a vegan from 11 years and a molecular nutritionist maybe I can give you some tips:
      1) start slowly: if your body is not used to eating legumes and cruciferus it can cause a lot or bloating, just add small portion of them, and then increase according to the right portion week per week
      2) if buying can legumes wash them super well to remove saponines, if you’re cooking them from scratch just add some bicarbonate while soaking and a piece of dried combu while cooking.
      3) you can also buy decorticated legumes, the ones without the dried skin outside which is many times harder to digest, expecially for people with gut issues
      4) eat slowly and chew well
      5) always add a bit of fat to your meals, really portion controled, to permit liposoluble vitamins to be absorbed and help bowel movements
      6) drink a lot for the same reason
      7) dont stuff yourself
A little bit of gas anyway is normal, expecially at the beginning, but the smelling gas comes from fermentation in the gut with food that it’s still there but should not.. thus by eating this way you’ll clean your gut, and day by day you’ll se a huge difference!
      I hope it helped❤

Emmie please 🙏 keep this in mind as you make it sound as if this is ok. Millions of us can't eat some of the foods you suggest. When you say I'm a registered
Dietitian, me thinks she know's what best for me. Please no offense you have Millions who can do exactly what you say and Millions of us who have diabetes issues. A video on this issue would be so VERY HELPFUL
      THANK YOU EMMIE
