Sonic in Shadow the Hedgehog game was definitely in another reality than everyone else. Serious tone and edge only to be broken up by his goofy demeanor every cutscene he's in.
I've noticed in ShTH that Sonic tends to act somewhat oddly in comparison to other mission characters. -In Westopolis, he tells Shadow to get past a part by using the homing attack on some G.U.N. Beetles, despite there being two other ways to get through said section. Usually when something requires killing enemies of a mission character's opposite alignment, they usually just hint at it instead of saying it outright or encouraging it (E.G. if a cage requires killing Black Arms and you've got Doom's Eye as your mission character, he'll just say they've taken the item inside for their purposes.) -In Lethal Highway, he encourages you to use Chaos Blast (which to use, requires filling up the dark gauge) on a wall to get a secret key. This is the only time I know of where a hero character tells you to use Chaos Blast. -Somehow, he knows that the switches for the Dark mission in Final Haunt activate the shields in front of the goal ring. There is no explanation for how he knows this and most hero characters either don't know about the opposite mission or discourage it.
I like how this means tom was there for the storybook games to know that happened, or that sonic explained every bit of that to tom and he believes it fully.
I believe in Black Knight, Sonic had a line along the lines of "I don't mind being the bad guy if I have to." (it was something about all the fighting he does) So it's kinda in character for him to sometimes slip these insults in

Because he'll still do good regardless Saving people from King Arthur's rule is a good thing, but lawfully evil given he'd have to slay him. @@SonikkuAtrue I mean, I think a similar thing of doing what's right regardless of whether it's seen as such is there in IDW, admittedly it's done very differently with his refusal to kill, and give his enemies chances at redemption (like with Mr Tinker and reviving Metal), despite most of the supporting cast disagreeing with him, and the consequences of this almost naive way of looking at things, to the point where it's a bit stubborn. I think that, even if it's executed in a very different way, the core stubbornness and doing what's right by his standards that are in Black Knight are still there in IDW.

I'll always remember this one scene from the end credits to Adventure 2, where Tails and Eggman are standing on the observation deck of the ark, pondering the Earth in the wake of the final battle. Eggman says some strikingly heartfelt, humanizing shit about how much he'd looked up to his grandfather, that he was the driving inspiration behind Eggman's lifetime pursuit of the sciences. "He was my hero," he says without an ounce of hesitation. He couldn't reconcile the Gerald Robotnik he remembered with the man whose plot they'd just thwarted. Could his childhood hero really have intended to bring the apocalypse for an act of petty vengeance? He trails off... ...And Tails the Psychopath waits all of half a second before piping up with something like, "Who cares? WE WON!"
"When I was a child, I looked up to my grandfather for all the great things he accomplished in his life. He was my hero, and I wanted to be a great scientist like him! But... did he really mean to destroy us?" "I dunno, but what I do know is... we all did it together!" Not as sociopathic but still not the greatest wisdom. The wildest part is that Eggman just responds to this with "You're right!" as if it is. To be fair, he is opening up to an 8-year-old.

@@SonikkuAtrue I mean, I think a similar thing of doing what's right regardless of whether it's seen as such is there in IDW, admittedly it's done very differently with his refusal to kill, and give his enemies chances at redemption (like with Mr Tinker and reviving Metal), despite most of the supporting cast disagreeing with him, and the consequences of this almost naive way of looking at things, to the point where it's a bit stubborn.
I think that, even if it's executed in a very different way, the core stubbornness and doing what's right by his standards that are in Black Knight are still there in IDW.

And because of that he's also not afraid to kill if necessary alot of the times if that's all that it takes to save the world
