- Following the success of the HUSS Top Spin in the 1990s, UK-based firm NA Superides developed their own version of the design. Only 3 were ever built - Rolling Thunder, Top Spin, and the Revolution.
Owned by James Danter, The Revolution travelled the UK between 1995 and 2002 before being exported to the Czech Republic.
Welcome to HTRewind, the series where we take a look back through our archive footage to bring you never seen before memories of fairgrounds and theme parks from the 1990s and 2000s.

I just don’t understand how this ride gets such a bad rep lol it’s truly an interesting ride concept especially paving way towards other spectacular flat rides we see today!
It was very un reliable Heavy and a serious amount of maintenance. Its replacement a KMG freakout is still in the hands of James Danter .that tells you the story
I always loved these rides. It sucks that they all seem to be fading out. I wish fhere would have been an outdoor giant top spin
I first rode this ride at Dorney Park in Allentown Pa. Love it!!!
Then a few years later I found a different one at the Bloomsburg Fair but the arms moved independently! This one was called 'Flippin Out'.. and became my favorite version of this ride.
Hacketts Top Spin is back on the road!
It’s currently at a fair in Workington
Stumbled upon thid by accident and what a great detailed video!
I still stick by my comment of never recovering from riding it in 96. Lol
And now Michael Mulhearn’s old machine is back out once again under the ownership of Clayton Hackett. After a full rebuild due to fire damage and a LOT of work its back in action and riding very well
Great video, thank you. I'd love to see more of these. It's a shame that Northern rides only ever released two types. Their Superstar ride was incredible and unique at the time. And it's, still an exciting machine to this day. Who knows what else they could have produced under different circumstances....
Great video! Love how much time and effort you put into it! I had no idea this ride, or a UK manufactured Top Spin even existed, so its great to learn so much!
Thank you Amy! I grew up with this ride, so I guess it’s as special to me as your hometown fair at Bournemouth was to you!
Very complete video, amazing job! Can't wait to see more of that type of videos!
Thank you very much! The first I’ve done of this type of video, I’ll see what else I can come up with!!
There is a recording of John Guest's Rolling Thunder as it was in England before it came to Poland
Great video thank you Dan👍
Seen Hackett's machine last night at Bridgewater. It looked very tidy and seemed to be working perfectly well
I saw it at Hull Fair yesterday. I watched this video the day before and I thought it was the same one from this video that went into storage. I didn’t think it was the same when I was at the fair so when I realised it was, you can imagine my regret for not riding it haha
That’s the same machine that went into storage David Hacketts son Clayton
Another great video Dan! Informative and strangely nostalgic! Keep safe you too!
Thanks Simon, glad you enjoyed it - I loved the nostalgia of watching all this footage back!
Well done Dan👏🏻 great film
Thank you 😁
Great video mate! Went well and truly down the rabbit hole! Really enjoyed this
Thanks mate!
Love this! More reminds please!
Thank you 😊 I’ve got a few tapes worth of fair footage from the 90s so will see what I can do!
Great video, thank you
Thanks Mark!
Went on hacketts top spin at wigan fair great ride. Nice to see something different on the fairs
Great video, hope to see more like this in the future as it was great and informative. Only top spin I've done (other than Rameses revenge)was Paul Harts travelling Huss model back in 2017 at Funderworld before it changed owners and went abroad, I wish there were more about nowadays
Ah yes, it was great to see that one briefly travelling in the UK - it’s been refurbished and renamed “bat spin” in Italy now. Thanks for watching!
I remember working at danters in the summer in Bournemouth this ride was always full got free rides. I worked on mega dance which is still going
in 2009 , In Lahore Pakistan. we also had Top Spin installed Joyland Lahore. It is still there and is one of the most dangerous rides in Pakistan. It has a stupendous RPM and spins to quick.
It used to spin for 3 mins straight but now they have reduced the ride cycle to just 1 minute 45 seconds
Great! 👏🏻👏🏻
Like other people have said, Hackett's are now traveling the top spin, in fact you could see it been refurbished via Google earth near Warrington
Indeed, in fact I went and saw it in person being refurbished at the yard a couple of years ago!
@@holdtightriders that must have been good to see, Hacketts are a nice family, I remember the family when they had the Church Twist in the 70s and i did do a pull down with them in cumbria
Clayton Hackett now owns David Hackett's Top Spin and is currently travelling in the UK at the moment. It was opened in Hartlepool in July 2021.
Just been to see it in Newcastle. Not quite what it once was but nice to see it out again!
@@holdtightriders it’s in Birmingham with danters at the digbeth summer funfair opening tomorrow until late august
I remember when this first came to the UK I was working for James danter and James snd myself was the first to set it up In Neath I think. Mid 90s
I really enjoyed that - it brought back fond memories of Revolution and the other NA Superspins. At the time I actually preferred them to the Huss version, thanks to the huge number of consecutive flips it could perform.
Thanks John. I think that must be the reason why these always fascinated me even as a child - to me the fabbri ones never looked like they flipped naturally and just looked inferior! That said, I never rode one of these NA ones, nor do I think I’d be brave enough to now 😂
Great video
Thanks Marc!
Very good video, best thing I have watched on YT for months. Have you considered making something similar for the Chipperfield Roller? It's a very unusual ride which also seems to have disappeared. :/
The level of research is crazy
Great video! Rode this once at Neath in the 90's, nauseating is an understatement 😀 Id ridden Wallis' fabbri version a few months earlier and that seemed tame compared to this.
Great machine just a shame it was horrible to ride.
they should defo bring mulhearns back out ive got a dvd from the hoppings 2000 watching that top spin made me fall in love
I remember Danter having a smaller version of this too, whats happened to that one??
alton towers used to have a top spin named ripsaw by huss, i think it was near nemesis, but flat rides just dont compare at theme parks to travelling fairs, the ride is much tamer and lacks the thumping music.
That’s very true, however they still have their places at parks as they help to take pressure off the other rides capacity and throughput wise, and also add a little bit of variety to any parks but has them IMO.
There are two travelling top spins that I went on in the late 90s early 2000s, one on a pier and another in Hampshire. To my disappointment the gondola had a controlled spin, and you had to sit on these black buttons on the seats.
Very well put together video! Thanks for sharing. It's a shame NA Superides went defunct. The superstar is one of my fairground personal favourites. Given its popularity, I'm surprised other manufacturers haven't picked up the design. I'm assuming the Patent is well expired now.
Thanks for watching and for the comment. I always loved the Superstars too, shame we haven't seen any new ones for some time.
You're probably already aware of this but PWS have recently purchased the drawings for the Superstar and say they are looking forward to working with David Ward in the near future - this can only mean we are going to see at least one new build Superstar before too long - you never know maybe a Supertwist could be built at some point in the future - that would really be something to see.
@@sallac8243Thanks for the info. It'll be interesting to see PWS's take on it. I heard that some of the earlier Superides models had some fatigue/cracking issues so hopefully PWS will address these.
some one one day is gonna HAVE to build a replica of it! and call it Revolution II .... or something. exactly the same design! but with better ways to maintain it!
Went to fair that i havent been to in about5 years and they took top spin and ring of fire away. Theres basically 2 good rides for teens now
Could this always return to the uk at some point if anyone is able to get their hands on it?
Seems unlikely now unfortunately as it’s dropped off the radar again and I’d imagine would need a lot of work doing if it was found. There is another one of the three in the uk that has just started travelling again though.
@@holdtightriders I heard maybe someone might track the location of this and fix it up, who knows?
Very interesting, Sochi is twinned with Cheltenham so from Montpellier to Russia
That is interesting, I never knew that! Small world.
Do you know What happened to eclipse ?
I want to buy the revolution, bring it back to the uk and completely restore it to its original colour scheme and repaint the artwork back to the original
These were not for the faint hearted.
I literally wanted to buy one of these 3 months back but we couldnt make a deal.
There's one small but crazier version (Joyland Lahore Topspin ) I rode and hated it all along !
Why did these rides go to other countries?
David hackett has a top spin currently operating in the UK. You may need to update this video. Thought you would like to know check out his video in 2022
Indeed. It's on the circuit with Stanworths at the moment.
I much prefer the experience offered on a Huss top spin, the lower hanging gondola gives a much more natural swing. The pivot point on these machines makes it a very uncomfortable and nauseating ride.
There’s a topspin currently at Birmingham beach fair in Birmingham
It's such a shame these rides are not in the uk anymore
There is one currently travelling the UK with Stanworths
@@christtototottottott of course there is, and we have a few great rides on the funfair circuit, including aerospace
just for the heads up, a youtuber called funfair audits has done a recent POV of it :)
Please do what happened to James Mellors Wild River Rapids
They went to Lightwater Valley theme park in Yorkshire! Give it a Google 😃😃
Is NA Super Rides defunct?
I believe so, unfortunately!
NA super rides went out of business in 2004
im the one on the right
walking the tagata
No way! I’ll put the full clip of that up soon for you then!
@@holdtightriders that would be cool.
One left in Gold reefcity south africa Call the Minus revenge
Spinning around in Russia with its restraints open..?! lol Great production!
Yeah rolling thunder seems to be having a few issues with it’s restraints by the looks of things! Very re-assuring 😂😂
So this ride is not at the funfairs
Not in the UK anymore unfortunately
Hold Tight Riders was the ride dangerous in the uk
We had one touring north scotland called terminator don't know who built it tho
That was built by Moser, I never got to see it in person but they were really heavy duty looking machines. The arms were able to both travel in opposite directions on those models too
I think it's unfair that the rest of Europe has these cool flat rides we Don't have anymore
Very well done ride research and presentation.
Could you please write down the names of the UK-owners? Like to update this post:

Thank you 😊 The uk owners were Billy Danter and then James Danter
