- Violinist Randall Goosby and pianist Zhu Wang perform Beethoven's Violin Sonata no. 9 - the 'Bridgetower' Sonata.
This piece is more commonly known as the 'Kreutzer' Sonata, following a re-dedication by Beethoven. However, it was originally dedicated to George Polgreen Bridgetower (1778-1860) a virtuoso violinist of Black descent, whose prodigious talent inspired Beethoven to create this celebrated piece.
0:00 Movement I.
11:35 Movement II.
26:25 Movement III.
This performance was commissioned by the Chineke! Foundation, in partnership with Google Arts and Culture, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven.
Randall Goosby and Zhu Wang appear by arrangement with Young Concert Arts, inc.

Brilliance!! Happy 250th Birthday Ludwig from your old friend, George Bridgetower
Finally a video that gives credit to where it's due. THE BRIDGETOWER SONATA.
Credit for this composition is due to Beethoven, and has always been given to Beethoven.
@@luckybag6814Yes, and Bridgetower was the one who insulted a woman who was Beethoven’s friend first and it was Beethoven who stood out for her. He was a sexist people, justifying people because they’re black is just naive.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
The Bridgetower Sonata is beautiful.
I have to thank Dr.Cornell West for bringing me here.
Me too. And Tricia Rose.
A great performance!! A great duo, pianist and violinist!! Bravissimo!!
Dude wow I can only play half the 1st movement this just help motivate me to continue
Really really really good performance
This performance evokes a picture in my mind of Beethoven and Bridgetower in a candle lit room playing this together for the first time. Genius all around. Kreutzer my ass...
🤣
It is a very interesting story! Beethoven was very angry at Bridgetower’s apparent comments towards a lady of whom Beethoven fancied.
Kreutzer himself doesn’t like this sonata at all!
So much drama and rich story haha
That’s Bridgetower’s version.
He also claimed that Beethoven was enchanted at him adding a passage that Beethoven hadn’t written into the violin part.
Whether that would really go down well with Beethoven (or any composer) is open to question. So maybe Beethoven got fed up of a cocky performer thinking he knew better than the composer.
That just so good! .Many thanks to Randall Goosby and Zhu Wang.
This was brilliant and I shall be sharing.
They look like two busy-bees who genuinely enjoy the paperwork. :) Love this!
Marvelous performance 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Finally the correct name is back
How is it the correct name?
Beethoven had the right to call it what he liked. He also had the right to change his mind and re-dedicate it.
oh THIS one. aka the Kreutzer. famous, and gorgeous. beautifully played here by new stars. I have the old LP Perlman version, and coincidentally Goosby is a protege of Itzhak.
Well, it shows!
WoW~! What a passionate duo~! Just look at their body languages show how they really enjoying their performance. Bravissimo~!!!
I ask yet again how does this music not get more exposure
It does. It's considered a mainstay of the repertoire and is a very famous piece and is widely performed.
Classical music is a major casualty of dumbing down, and the war on white men.
@@luckybag6814 I don't understand what you tryina say
Awesome recording. Big ups to all involved in this project.
Gorgeous performance of this wonderful piece.
Bravissimo! Wonderful playing with passion.
After Beethoven's death, Bridgetower believed that their conflict would lead to him being forgotten forever. But now, with recordings like this immortalizing his name, the conflict is just water under the bridge.
Oh god what have I done.
Edit: I somehow managed to misspell something.
It's "Bridgetower", not "Bridgewater".
One of the best kreuzer playing! Very impressive! One line with D.Oistrah and V. Oborin.
Love it!
An exhilarating performance...well done.
love it... all over again...
Great👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Just lovely! 🎶🎻🎹💟
If I remember correctly, Kreutzer heard of but REFUSED to play this piece. I think he'd rather it be called the Bridgetower sonata too!
That was excellent, Very Dynamic.
Magnificent I must say
ENJOYING
Excellent!!!
Beautifully played
Inspired duo 💖
Really enjoyed this performance great job bravo!
Magnifique interprétation !! Bravo et merci
Superb interpretation and collaboration.
Wow beautiful performance! Probably my favorite sonata
Bravo!!!
Lovely tone
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
I am listening to this every single day now! AMAZING
Is this available on Spotify?
The pianist!!! beautiful
This is superb, both artists. But please somebody tell Mr Zhu Wang to get Alexander training or his neck will be a real problem as he ages (which will happen in the blink of an eye).
Do you guys understand that most people give up trying to learn this piece? Most can't play the Violin nor piano.
Edit: Grammatical Error
Why?
I would love to add he was of Barbadian decent hence ‘Bridgetower’ capital of Barbados Bridgetown. Go check it out it’s a really interesting story.
& Erupted in thunderous applause...👏👏👁️♥️🦤🦚🕊️🕊️
Super Controversial piece considering ,, That Bridgetower made a joke about a female acquaintance of Beethoven. I feel like it's more a likely story that the female interest had a fancy for Bridgetower.
Could be. Handsome dude if we believe the portraits.
But we only have his version of the falling out. He also boasted of “improving” the piece rather than sticking to the score at one point - i can’t help thinking that “musical differences” may have been to blame.
Thanks for reminding me again why I don't listen to Beethoven this is like listening to paint dry
I can’t agree, even though it’s not the most riveting performance. But fair play for your honest view, rather than just following the crowd.
Beautiful duo! It’s really a travesty that performances like this don’t make the headlines or increase news viewership. I can guarantee, though, most children between the ages of 7 and 17 never hear of Mr. Goosby. But they know the name, George Floyd. Love these gentlemen.
