in my younger days i would travel from France to Holland by train in winter so you could see the weather drastically change from the beach of the south of France to the cold climate of north Europe ... i was listening to Rachmaninov 3rd concerto and Paganini caprice Variation during this travel, this was on a cd portable player with headphone and was basically the only recording i had on me for the 7 hour travel .... listening to the entrance bring me directly to this time back when i was boarding the train and going for the first time to northern Europe... thanks for sharing it is an amazing performance i have just listened to and it bring back some sweet memories of my first encounters with classical music ( i know that concerto by heart ) i teach classical guitar btw

The double stops are simply out of this world, how pure they sound. 5:20 this is actually the more amazing part to me, this is so incredibly difficult to do. The crescendo into diminuendo into another crescendo with double stop harmonics into the trill. Thats something Roman Kim himself would find difficult to play that cleanly

Ray Chen is such an expressive interpreter, it feels very emotional to listen to him; the phrasing of the music is very richly expressed, and it's very sentimental.
Also, I feel like Sibelius' music is very original; the first time I heard his music I though that he had very misterious melodies, but when you hear the second parts of the piece all those variated themes become connected with beautiful harmonies (I like them very much!)

While it is quite agreeable that Ray's playing is absolutely phenomenal, we also need to take into consideration the work of the symphony orchestra behind him. After all, a concerto is half the soloist and half the symphony orchestra!
And also can we take a moment to appreciate the cinematography? Particularly at 15:34, when the camera overlaps Ray and the flutist while they play together, is an absolutely gorgeous moment in the concerto, the calm before the storm. Everything about this video is perfect. Bravo!

I'll put it this way, I've played the accordion for over 15 years, and to a certain extent I have a bit of insight into the world of music. Playing such a complex composition in a musical sense was and is simply not for everyone. But Ray Chen is one of the best violin players I've ever heard. Lightness and joy that is reflected in his playing. Sibelius's musical style is easily confused with tension, but his music is certainly one of the underrated examples of how well folkloric and romanticism fit together; he is similar to the Norwegian composer Edward Grieg. In any case, this concert is an everyday highlight for every music lover.

Hillary Hahn, Sarah Zhang and Ray Chen all have their own interpretations of this piece of concerto. You can hear it through the way they interpret the emotional flow of the melody through the bow strokes. I admire Hahn's and Zhang's crisp and powerful strokes which may be superior in some aspect in comparison to ray's version in my opinion; however, the emotion dedicated with Ray's playing in this version has an ethereal melody that is not produced in other versions of the concerto. Ray's unique style of manifesting his emotions during performances is his trademark and I should tell you that this version is my favourite one.

YJ JY - In my opinion, the most expressive version of this is by Lisa Batiashvili. Her recording with Daniel Barenboim conducting is extraordinary, again, in my opinion. There are some videos of her playing the concerto on You Tube. The one with the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome is very good.
