I come watch Ray play this beautiful piece of music when I feel awful and it heals me. In music like this there is no room for pettiness, grudges, or small minded arguments. There is just the music. It carries me away.
I first watched this because I was crushing on Ray in his video with TwoSet - now I've come to genuinely love this piece and violin concertos in general
I’n working on a scholarship essay while listening to this for the first time and that was the worst mistake of my life...my god...Once that cadenza came on, my full attention was on to Ray’s playing. It felt like I was in a trance. Jesus christ.
Whenever I write with this on, the forlorn atmosphere infects my writing. It's insane. This is one of the few pieces of any art/literature that can bring tears to my eyes. Played wonderfully by Ray Chen. I usually go back and forth between Anne-Sophie Mutter and Ray Chen on this piece.
Ray is my favorite interpreter of pieces with some darkness and drama to them. The way he plays the fast trill part, I can imagine the Devil himself playing it to Tartini.
Now that Ray is a bit older, a more masculine bravura appears in his playing, which I find really caps off his artistry. He is playing from the soles of his feet, rather from his head now.
This is my favorite interpretation. His playing is just sweet like caramel but his passion makes it’s feel like he really has sold his soul to the devil. This cadenza made me feel authentic fear. I had to look over my shoulder; I’m watching this at night.
Ray is such an incredible musician. His playing has such a full and rich sound to it too... clearly some who has mastered his potential well and respects the instrument he plays as well as the music.
For anyone interested, this is a translation of the Dutch at the end of the video (just because the narrator calls Ray a beast tbh): Violin player Ray Chen and the Devil's Trill sonata by Giuseppe Tartini, arranged for violin and string orchestra, and the string orchestra was here the Amsterdam Sinfonietta lead by concert master Candida Thompson. *You need to be a bit of a beast to play this piece like this.* Ray Chen, who by now has been upstairs, up the stairs, and already down the stairs, two, three steps at a time, and he reports to the ensemble again. I will now reveal that you will hear some more about this soloist, Ray Chen, together with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta.
Ray is one of the few musicians I've seen play this piece with such emphasis on the high note at 13:27 and it just evokes so much more emotion. A powerful culmination that explodes with passion and I am LIVING for it. Can't get enough of this rendition.
Ray is such an amazing storyteller... I can always SEE the Music when he plays. Such an experience, this also happens in his rendition of the Tchaikowski Concerto, where he describes a hero (in an interview about his interpretation)
I've listened to many other recordings of this, and very few manage to capture the intensity and bravura that Ray does. This will likely remain my "reference recording" for a long time.
After listening to this extraordinary performance, I need to share that Ray looks just like my dad who passed at age 26, a young and promising Chinese-Japanese violinist and conductor. Just wanted to express how much meaning it added to the extreme beauty of this performance.
