It's a bad joke to review beta hardware. Serveral things aren't final, pre-production body & firmware, especially. And even AF and IBIS is NOT yet being finalized. See this from Fuji rumors - IBIS still needs to be fine tuned until the release in mid-July. The goal is to make it a gimbal-free camera. FYI.

I hope you get to see this. So I am interested in adopting PRORES RAW and I am a FCPX user.. My questions are (1) On the Atomos website Fujifilm XH2S output is labelled as 10BIT. There is no written indication of 12BIT PRORES RAW but the 8K Fujifilm XH2 has PRORES RAW 12BIT written in the Product Specification. I am a litttle confused if the XH2S is outputting true 12bit Raw Signal. Or if its a mistake in writing by Atomos

I'm saying this for years now: Fuji NEEDS to come out with a real professional camcorder / video camera. They are the only ones who have such experience with colors and film that we'd be seeing the best image, the most beautiful colors ever. I'm so in love with fuji since I first saw what the X-T1 could do, now owing my own X-T4 and color wise I prefer it to almost everything

The most beautiful colors ever? Pentax doesn't get the love but I don't know why. The colors from Pentax are still my favorite..... I've shot Fuji and Leica and I still go back to Pentax for stills, I also shoot Nikon. For video, Panasonic's Lumix and Sony A7S lll model are best for pro level quality. IBIS ON PENTAX IS DELICIOUS 🤤 TRY IT IF YOU HAVEN'T.

Holy cow, whatareview, Gerald! no v-bloggers out there could cover so much in such straightforward, no fat words to trim, technically 2nd to none. Thank you so much for your honest devotion to help out photography lovers around the world.
Regarding the F-XH@s menu options, they are, as you pointed out, exceedingly vast so requiring an accurate cross mental checking to yield an optimal fine tuning when combining the vlogs/on-off NR/ISO/still-video settings. I watched this video over and over and, honestly, won't be able to replicate your guidance in an external non controlled lighting scenario, for instance.
So, Gerald, if I may, putting together a quick ´parameters settings chart, specifically aimed at this X-H2s, covering the issues mentioned above, would be a Godsend inseparable tool for all users of the camera. P,lease....

Look at 4:37. In 4K 120fps, there is an option for "ON HDMI ONLY".
Furthermore, look at the bottom of the screen. It says FRAME RATE FOR HDMI OUTPUT IS 120P / 100P, when MEDIA REC: OFF
So the answer is YES to the first part of your question. For the second part, I would say NO as it doesn't mention any change to the crop factor.

Gerald, love your technical review as always, it's one of the reasons I bought this camera and truely fall in love with recording video. Don't know if you still have this camera or not, I was wondering if you can test the externally recorded braw output, consider blackmagic update their braw sdk, and it works perfectly on Panasonic S5IIX. In my experience with X-H2S braw though, I notice that the camera doesn't output log image to recorder, rather a graded image, camera hdmi setting show PROVIA(camera and hdmi), so the exposure tools recorders have are not working properly. Also, when recording raw externally, the iso range is restricted between 1000 and 12000(just like in the HLG mode, strange), and it seems like this applied to all the fuji camera that can recording braw, including the newer X-S20.

When it comes to editing performance of the different codecs, I'm thinking it comes down to hardware decode/encode support. Puget Systems has a helpful table of what codecs are/are not supported by different platforms. RTX 3000 doesn't have hardware support for H.265 10-bit 4:2:2, but 11th/12th gen QuickSync do have support.

Hey Gerald, recently i've been doing some in depth testing and found that at both 1250 and 3200 in f-log 2 there is a lot of chroma noise reduction happening at -4, causing colors to bleed and losing color info in the shadows, and the sharpening even at -4 is very very strong causing a very digital looking image, I've sent email requests to fujifilm to give us options to lower the noise reduction and sharpening another few notches, but they haven't even open the emails, so please if possible help us x-h2s users out by forwarding these requests, or at least making these problems more known, thank you very much!

    Excellent review!
I feel just like we have the option of post noise reduction which gives better results, the stabilization should also have that option by recording gyro data like Sony. Combined with the low rolling shutter, post-stab can really work well for this camera.
The lenses remain the biggest issue with this system, hopefully third party lenses will fix that as well.

Give canon lenses a try for this with the fringer adaptor. From my tests on a lot of Fuji lenses, they are better than native. Especially the sigma 18-35. Added bonus is that they don’t flicker exposure when zooming

When it comes to noise there is also how the camera renders noise. I have a sony rx100m3 and the noise is so similiar to film grain its actually looks pleseant in the black and white mode.
I am a dynamic range nut. I started on a Nikon D80, and I remember when a graduated filter was a requirement for shooting. Then I upgraded to a d7100 which was amazing compared to my first camera, since then dynamic range has become very important to me when looking for a camera.

You've mentioned the improvements, I have one grip about a step backward: the focus selector button. the X-H1 has a lever that allows the single, continuous, or manual selection to be made with a twist of a lever with the left thrid or fourth finger almost subconsciously, while the eye never leaves the composition. From what I've seen of reviewers of the X-H2S, focus selection requires 1) pressing a button at the front, 2) looking at a screen for the choices, 3) scrolling to the desired option. All of this are a major distraction from composition. I often switch between settings during a shoot and the loss of the nearly-subconscious experience into a deliberate computer operational experience grieves me.

The XH2S is set up for a different workflow than you are used to. Have you programmed all of your custom settings on the PASM dial? The reason that they changed the M/AF-S/AF-C selector from a lever to a button is so that you can set the 7 different custom settings (and other modes if you use them) to a particular focus mode, which decreases a lot of steps in your workflow once you get used to working like that. It takes a while to get the PASM dial set up how you want it, but once you do, you hardly have to change any settings or press any buttons while using the camera.
If your style of working requires you to constantly change between manual focus and auto, and you can't solve that problem by having two different modes on your PASM dial set to auto focus and manual, there is an easy way to use autofocus and manual focus together: 1) set your camera to manual focus... 2) the AF-ON button to the right of the joystick for autofocus (the AF-ON button can be set to AF-S or AF-C). As an alternative (that I don't suggest)... you can set your camera to autofocus, enable the AF-MF feature (when you turn the focus ring it turns the camera to manual focus), but then you need to set an Fn button to AF-LOCK so that the camera doesn't go back to autofocus when you press the shutter button to take your picture.
      Hope that helps.

@@kites4121 Thank you for the time and effort you put into your post, but I already am running out of buttons for the functions I set to a custom functions, (white balance, timer, back focus, etc), but the #1 deal breaker for me is the back screen. So I am on the waiting list for the XT5. 🙂

The form factor and controls would be a learning curve after 8 years with X-T bodies, but seems do-able. The body is a little smaller and lighter than I expected, and is actually a little shorter and lighter than my T3 with the small rig L bracket grip. I’m still undecided…

With your quick AF tests, did you adjust the AF speed ? or try one of the presets modes ? can make a big difference on how well the camera does or does not track focus to chaning subject distance. Good review for looking at DR. Fuji has always made a way better picture for video than the price would suggest it should :)

Didn't care about Fuji's launch video. I was waiting for yours to drop and went straight down to Dynamic Range section. I was hoping this would match 12.x stops of recent Sony/Canon cameras. Because that was going to be what my purchase decision is hinged on. But you totally blew my mind by actually experimenting and finding out how it can squeeze out 14+ stops with NR off and doing it in post. Appreciate Fuji giving the option to turn off noise reduction. My a7siii doesn't do that. It has good DR but I can't squeeze out any more than what it does out of the box.
I'm in on the pre-order for XH-2S. Thanks for all the work you put in, Gerald.

@@geraldundone I know you don't use Prores Raw/FinalCut. I'm a Davinci user too. But I'm curious how would a7siii fare when recorded in Prores raw and NR done in post considering prores raw should bypass Sony internal NR. In your tests, a7siii showed 17+ stops in Slope based DR in HLG3. So, curious how much potential is going unused in Sony due to their reluctance to not let us turn off the internal NR.
