    😔 I’m so sorry. I’ve been trying to hear the difference between these sounds for almost 10 years.
    Are there any English words that have these different S sounds that you can compare to?

      this sort of distinction does not exist in English that you can compare to. I struggle with the same problem but listening to the emphasis helps. Otherwise you would have to rely on context, or pitch. 's' and 'ss' are both higher pitch than other plain consonants but 'ss' can sometimes be higher pitch than 's'. You can also focus on aspiration (breath of air out). 's' is like a soft English s +h. 's' is an English s pronounced harsh but with no +h if you will.
      WIth these subtle differences along with variation amongst native speakers, hopefully you are able to train your ears to hear/produce the difference naturally. If not, it is okay too!
