There's something about this era of music. It's often simple, no crazy vocals, just backing music with easy lyrics. No sound effects or overproduction, just the basics of a song. That's all you need sometimes. Timeless music.
This song was originally recorded by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons and was the B-side of their hit "Rag Doll". (In case you aren't aware of B-side meaning the flip side of a 45-rpm vinyl record).
I thought there was something off, maybe the scratchy old record because I remember it a lot clearer. Now I must go listen to Frankie and find a cleaner version of "Silence is golden".
The high voice on Silence is Golden was provided by Rick Westwood who was lead guitarist in The Tremeloes for 54 years from 1958 until 2012. He is still around and was 80 years old back in May last year.
Glad y'all share the lyrics. After hearing the song a billion times, I now know what the title means. As Amber said...keep silent because she is going to deny your claim anyway, and probably resent you for hurting her. Why hurt the one you love, even when you see her going down the wrong road? A thoughtful and melodious golden oldie. Grazzi!
I was 10 living on a farm in the outskirts of Wheeling, WV. We did lots of "family" things on the farm. lots of picnics and lots of swimming in the local creek. Not a bad time I can remember....but I was 10. You were 16. I can only guess what life was like for you.

Had the pleasure of seeing these guys in 2019. Lead singer (Chip Hawkes) was suffering from cancer at the time & had lost all his hair, but he just made a joke of it. Just a really great humble guy. Anyway, he was ok in the end, and he's still with us. They still sounded great, just like they did back in the day. ❤🎶🎼🇬🇧
Throughout all the social confusion, chaos and the different musical styles of the mid-to-late 60's, there were a few band who still put out some of the lovliest songs you will ever want hear. This is one of them. Just beautiful.
Gotta love the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's! By the 90's the WRETCHED AUTO TUNING began. I've been a ROCKER since 5 yrs. old when I first heard Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry etc., but I also liked those with great harmonies. This was one of my favs from 1967, and I have it in my collection. I was in 9th grade that year, and it reminds me of a crush I had on a pretty girl back then. No auto tuning in those days, but still Rockin' at 71.
The lead singer of 'The Tremeloes' Chip Hawkes is the father of Chesney Hawkes who had a hit with 'The One and Only'. Some members of the band are still performing live.
A terrific tune, a deeper lyric than one might expect, and beautiful arrangements, instrumentally and vocally. Another great British Invasion track is 'Have I the Right' by the Honeycomb, featuring a pounding beat courtesy of the female drummer, tweaked distorted guitar and bold vocals. A favourite of this English-born kid since back in the day. 😊❤
I lived in an Australian government housing estate when I was about 9 years old back in 68 and their were a lot of new immigrants and some were British and "Have I the right to love you" is still ringing in my brain to this day. Awsome song.
I saw a sign at a Vietnam war protest (yeah, I'm really old) that said "Silence is golden, but sometimes it's just yellow." I've always remembered that line. Never be afraid to speak out.😊❤️✌️
This song brought back a lot of memories back, I gave this song to a friend of mine and told him to listen to the words very very carefully, as his girl was cheating on him I never had to say a word to him 6 weeks later he thanked me and said I now know why you told me to listen to the words, he said he was ready to put a ring in her finger but caught her on the act. I said that's what real friends are for. Song are a great way of telling someone who is being wronged that he or she needs to listen to the words. You do not need to just blurt it out.
The way they swap the lead singing between a couple of guys is indeed amazing; at first it's the lower voice starting the line, joined by the harmonies, and the lower one pops through once; with the high voice linking the next lines together in the second part, the harmonies join in, the high voice again popping through. The 'silent' portions of the harmony vocals are indeed golden! Genius!!!
Thank you! Both impressive especially considering that drummers and particularly bass players aren't usually singers. It's not easy holding down the rhythm plus singing difficult parts.
One of the bands that tried to stem the tide of the British Invasion was a group from San Francisco. They were the Beau Brummels. They charted with the song Laugh,Laugh. Many thought they were actually British because of their sound.
AHA this band lived around the corner to my dad who could hear them rehearsing. Brian Poole was a local butcher's son who wanted to be in a band. After he went back to his shop and could be seen there.
Probably the best musicians in the british invasion. There's a video somewhere on youtube of them doing this song live. Its incredible. I started watching you when it was just Jay, not sure how long you;f been going then. I think one fo your Bee Gees reactions appeared in my feed. Its been a real enjoyable journey, watching you learn about different tunes and appreciate different music that I have taken for granted most of my life.
Two songs like this from the mid 60's with gentle harmonies that y'all would like are A Summer Song by Chad & Jeremy and I Go to Pieces by Peter & Gordon. Both have a sort of pre-Simon & Garfunkel vibe.
@@TheOriginalRick16 Magazibe did a pictorial of a humorous 'feud',between the two bands. In one, Peter had his back to Gordon. Gordon was saying, " All I said was, 'you look like Chad' !"
This song still stands the test of time, this was all over the airwaves in the day, and on the bus home (at least up here in the great white north🇨🇦) someone would have a transistor radio on and this was one of the songs that when it came on, all the young girls sang to it. Looking back on it now those were sometimes magical times.😎🍺☮️
This is a great cover of a 1964 original by Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons (the B-side of "Rag Doll".) The The Tremeloes used the same arrangement as the original, and it did very well for them in 1967, where it stayed at the number 1 spot for 3 weeks on the UK charts. This would be a good nominee for one of your "cover" days, to play the Four Seasons original and see just how close they were. Great job as always! OH, and I'm an "OG" subscriber J, I caught your first few reactions before bringing Amber onboard. You've both just gotten better and more beloved over the past three years. Yes, as said below, check out the 4 Seasons version for your Cover Songs day.. Love this song. Singing along here. Nice version. Thanks. Again, please consider the Frankie Valli version of this song. I joined the Rob Squad family before Amber came on board, maybe March or April, and have never left y’all! It’s been great watching you expand your musical horizons, experiencing Jay accepting styles he thought he never would, and just learning in general. Keep up the great work and I’ll be here. Big hugs to you both (and the kiddos). 💗
Another solid upbeat hit by the Tremeloes is "Here Comes My Baby," from the same mid-60s period. It's one of those "party in the background" songs that helped bolster its radio and jukebox appeal. It's also one of those "everyone whistle in the middle" tunes.
I'm so glad you guys are playing this era of great songs... It really brings back some good memories of better times... This was one of my favorite songs back then... Great reaction guys... See you on the next one... Keep being awesome !!!...

This is a cover of an old Four Seasons song which is why it sounds so very 60`s. This was on a compilation album that I was given for Christmas in 1971 along with my first record player and as it was the only record I had for that holiday season I played that thing to death and this was definitely one of the stand out tracks.

Yes, The Four Seasons sang this song in the 60s. Another Tremeloes song that I like is Even The Bad Times Are Good. And,The Tremeloes backed Brian Poole ,with a great song "Do You Love Me "

Beautiful, beautiful song. Have always liked it. The music from the British invasion was great. It's interesting to note that most of these groups tended to lose their accents when they sang. Loved the video. Keep them coming.
i find it rather amusing that although people rave over the british invasion, how they love british music, most of those invaders were heavily influenced by american music. the beatles and stones earlier works were largely covers of american classics, and what was exported was american with a british twist.
Have always Loved this one, and a Real Hit back in the day. Great Harmony! But have to say I thought they were a US Group, so I learned something, if they're British! Love these old-time Hits! Great Reaction, You Guys! :)
Fun Fact: The Tremeloes were signed by Decca Records over another band because The Tremeloes were from the area and would be easier to call in to perform at shows. The band that Decca Records rejected? The Beatles

The Beatles
OG here ! My wife and I love your channel. Thanks for all the trips down memory lane.👍
Brian Poole was the lead singer 1958-1968.
Fantastic song! Love the 60’s❤️✌🏻🎶
Just remember, silence is golden.
I remember this song very well from when I was a teenager Thanks for bringing it back.
We love you! I’ve been following you for two plus years
Written by Crew and Gaudio for Frankie Valli and the Four seasons, so it was written /arranged out of New York. Still a great version.
You can tell the American pop influences. You must do the original by The Four Seasons.
