I like how the decline of the Kingsguard mirrors the decline of the Night's Watch. Just like the Watch becomes a dumping ground for criminals, the guard is increasingly composed of sub-par thugs, promoted way above their abilities as a reward for political loyalty.

Balon Swann is a better fighter than you give him credit. He was in the thick of the battle on the Blackwater. He is a finalist in the archery contest of the Hand's Tourney beaten only by Anguy (and maybe Jalabhar). Tyrion describes him as skilled at arms with lance and morning-star, and superb with the bow. In another period he would have been part of a good batch of Kingsguard. And of course Hotah can tell he would be a much tougher opponent than Arys.

    • @davidlewis5312
      @davidlewis5312 2 месяца назад +9

Balon is also accredited by Doran as an honorable man who has been asked to do something that conflicts with his honor and Doran feels aggrieved FOR HIM. High praise indeed. Balon was also sent because of his capability and sense of honor would have made him a canindate for Margarery to call upon during a trial by combat. And honestly Balon could probably carve most sparrows to little meaty bits.

The thing with Loras is the Tyrells are kind of believed to have engaged in a siege, but not really trying all that hard in the past. Mace did the siege of Stannis at Storm's End, but it seems more like a chance to stay out of the actual fighting while appearing to support the crown. Therefore, his house really wouldn't piss either side off too much. The idea of Loras pulling something similar and adding an "injury" so he wouldn't have to return too quickly and give his house room to maneuver makes sense. After all, he might face his own trial in KL or just be another hostage of the Lannisters there.

Jaime also has the distinction of having been a member of the kingsguard for 3 successful assassinations of a King. One by his own hand, one by a plot directed by his sister to cover up their bed hopping, and one that he was 100% innocent with regard to! I guess not being complicit or an uninvolved accessory to an assassination is a step up for Jaime. Best of luck with Tommen not being number 4.
And when you consider that the only official kings to be assassinated are Maegor, Aegon II, and Daemon Blackfyre if you want to go that way prior to Aerys II... that's something!
King Aenys, King Baelor, and King Viserys II might have been assassinated but this is unconfirmed.

Jaime's "breakdown" of Kingsguard is one of my favorite chapters in "Storm", especially the part where he has a cock contest with Loras.
Anyway, I often found myself wondering how exactly did Meryn and Boros ended up in the Kingsguard in the first place (I'd ask the same about Preston Greenfield, but we barely knew him). I mean, both are often described as incompetent, cruel and average fighters and it's not like they're from any big houses which might justify their presence. With all others you can at least get some sort of idea of how they got there, but these two are an enigma.

They are mentioned to be Tywin's men, and are useful lackeys to the Lannisters. And then Boros was supposed to fetch Sansa, when she was left behind during the riots and he didn't do it. He was supposed to protect Tommen and he yielded him without any fight. I think Joffrey’s original Kingsguard lineup is worse. Ser Jaime is made Lord Commander out of pure nepotism WHILST he’s captured in the Riverlands. Ser Meryn and Ser Boros are bad, but so is Ser Preston who spends his days drinking and visiting brothels. Ser Mandon is a quiet brute with unknown loyalties (though he was instated by Jon Arryn = Lysa = Littlefinger). Sandor Clegane is also a quiet brute who’s not even a knight (thus not very legit in the eyes of anyone). Ser Arys is… present. Dismissing Ser Barristan was a big mistake. Most of them also beat Sansa with almost no remorse.
I think Loras and Balon are absolutely improvements over Preston and Mandon. Osmund over Sandor is a bit of a wash.

Even though Boros is useless as a bodyguard from a martial perspective, he will break his vows and carry out whatever task Tywin needs of him without pushing back like Balon Swann would.

Maybe House Strong didn't go extinct, just the branch with a claim to Harrenhal. That would be Lucamore's brother, his sons, their sons, and their sons. But since House Strong had been around since forever, or at least since the Conquest, there were likely other Strongs that kept the name going. Kind of like how Edd Tollett shares a name with those Vale lords, but is too distant a cousin to get anything for it.
So they could be trying to pass him off as some riverlander, but I think it's more likely they chose the name for prestige points, not plausibility. He wouldn't be the first to name himself Strong (there are a couple in the Golden Company too) or to take Robert's name to honor the king.
But yeah, a surprise knight out of nowhere with an on-the-nose pseudonym is both suspicious, and the least suspicious thing about him. I think Cersei is just hoping to survive her trial and get Myrcella back before Bob starts leaking flesh, and Qyburn is hoping to see his creation wreck house and then reveal how the Martells were right all along.

@@RapaxGuardian Oh definitely. (Possible HotD Spoilers) Fire and Blood is pretty contradictory about it, which is confusing, but we know Lord Larys survived that incident by being elsewhere.
Estimates range between the number of Strong prisoners at Harrenhal, probably 6-12; up to a pile of heads three feet high, which I'd estimate as at least 60. "No trueborn Strong was spared," but I get the impression Aemond didn't even try to look outside the castle. "Every man and boy" was executed, but we get no mention of women besides Alys Rivers, who was spared.
It's possible there were no Strongs outside the castle besides Larys, and no women besides Alys (besides Larys' sisters, who might have been dead, and were completely ignored in the story) . . . but both of those being true is unlikely.
More likely, anyone who was still claiming Strong ancestors (besides Alys and Larys) shut up about it as soon as they heard what happened at Harrenhal.

Bran, for example, idolizes them, whereas if there were 10,000, he would just think of them as faceless grunts.

      Yes. Yes you are.
The kingsguard are not the Royal Guard. There are plenty of Royal Guards who serve at the palace. We even get a couple of interactions with them.
The Kingsguard are *bodyguards*. Think like the President and the secret service. When the President goes somewhere, the Secret Service plan it out in advance for safety, and use men from local law enforcement for certain duties. It is also their role to perform background checks on everyone involved, and to perform *close protection*.
That's the Kingsguard. They are meant to lead the forces guarding the king, and stand as his last line of defense and champion. They aren't simply meant to stand at castle doors, there are hundreds of people doing that, gold cloaks, house guard. It is the kingsuard's responsibility to oversee all these people. Seven is a holy number, and more than sufficient to cover 2 locations in rotating shifts. Like, yeah, they probably could expand that number out to 20, but any more than that and you are making things worse not better. The guard is already nepotistic and broken, you don't need more space for mediocre people-especially when these people are in charge of the overall security, and from a reader's standpoint, you need to keep track of them.
The issue becomes when they are scattered. Myrcella in Dorne has one KG, meaning that there are times when that KG will be exhausted and not sharp, and times where he is not personally overseeing the Lannister house guards. Also he gets misled, misdirected, and then wrecked. Cersei has very few choices to defend her in her upcoming trial until Strong is brought in, and Margery has an even rougher time there.

There is also the strange part when he says that Falyse is unable to feed herself. Isn't it possible that while Falyse's head was sewn into Strong's corpse, her own corpse is somehow still... how to say to.... undead but unable to eat since there is no head...
It is also possible that Qyburn is... kind of... changing the heads, i.e. sewing other heads into Robert Strong... There is this another mention about puppeteers being "used up". Is Qyburn keeping these poor gals alive while transplanting their organs into Robert Strong?

He claimed he was knighted after battle by a man who subsequently died, making it impossible to confirm his story either way. We never see him in any combat situation either iirc, so his actual fighting ability is completely unknown as well. Basically, he talked his way into a position of power, then got a place on the kingsguard because of politics. Of this kingsguard I feel Swann, Tyrell and maybe Oakheart (if you keep him away from Arianne) are actually good choices, or at least they are relatively to what the recent lineup has been.
They all seem to be capable fighters and decent men. Loras might be a bit too prideful for the position, but you can’t really deny he’s skilled enough and with his sister being the queen it helps his case more as he obviously wants to keep his sister safe.
It will be interesting to see if Loras actually is horribly wounded or not. I tend to think the dude who just stole the royal fleet might not be the most reliable source on this stuff, but who knows.
I do reckon tho that Loras and the redwyne fleet are actually sailing around to protect the Reach and that Loras for the time being is fine.
Balon Swann unfortunately is probably cooked in Winds, which really leaves all 3 of the decent ones either dead or busy/potentially horribly wounded.

As bad as the Canon era Kingsguard are, I feel like you really can’t say any but Jaime, who cucked his own king, are any worse than Lusty Lucamore.
Most KG seem to take lovers and therefore a lot of them probably have bastards too, but Lucamore married multiple different women and sired legitimate children on them in secret.

Yeah I think you're right but that's kind of the point. The current kings guard are meant to show how much corruption and politics has ruined that institution as well as others.

I personally think that Ser Crispy Cole is the worst of the worst, and should replce any of the following in this list:
    Ser Jaime
    Ser Balon
    Ser Loras
He definitely helped to bring about one of the worst civil wars in recent history, as well as stepping wayyyyyy out of line in his capacities as Kingsguard, Lord Commander... And other roles in the war.
To me he is pretty much on the same level as Rossart combined with Pycell... If they were kingsguard.
But love the video all the same

Sir Lucamore "The Lusty" should have been on the list. Pretty high too, IMO

On paper Jaime is the worst kingsguard by a wide margin. It's not even close.
