- Nice version of this tune, played at the Kattinge gathering for Oldtime music in Denmark, September 9, 2016. Johannes Bonefaas on banjo, Niels Bonefaas on fiddle, John Anderson on Double Base.
I love this, you can really get lost in the music
A little background on the tune title. One sunny Summer Saturday morning Garry went down to our river camp at the confluence of the Embarras ("Am-braw") River and Indian Creek (as per our band name at the time, the Indian Creek Delta Boys). After heading south from hometown Charleston, Illinois on gravel country roads, turning off the road just past Walker's Ford onto the long driveway to pass by the Hudson's farmhouse, down through the barn lot, another half-mile or so on the field trail that skirted the corn field, and pulled up to the camp site we'd cultivated for generations. Upon stepping out of his car, he noticed two things: 1) Our bandmate, John "Fiddlin' Bish" Bishop had spent Friday night at the camp by himself and was still sprawled out asleep on the ground by the fire pit; and 2) He must have been in that same still position for quite some time as at least a half-dozen Turkey Vultures (colloquially: Buzzards) were circling above him, licking their chops. Garry had only that same Friday evening made up a new tune and didn't yet have a name for it. Bingo! Why not memorialize the hilarious specter by calling it: "Boys, The (or Them) Buzzards Are Flying." And it stuck. And to his defense, Bish still insists that he was, in fact, sleeping and not passed out. Where all those empty beer cans came from remains a mystery. ; =}
Thanks a lot Tuco for this very interesting history of this great tune! Also great playing of the Scandinavian guys. I was lucky to be there in the audience. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Beautiful song. Beautiful story! Please make a tutorial video without so many instruments at the same time so more people can learn it!
Thanks for the story about this tune! I love to play this one, i'm going to enjoy it even more now I have heard the story.
I'm with Bish. Just having a rest. Can't pin the empties on him, wouldn't stand up in a court of law. Love from Australia.
Great history
My late brother Garry Harrison made that tune and I have to say, you fellers NAILED IT. Waytago!
I d like to learn it! It has a calming vibe! Makes me think of fields and travel. A steady and gentle drive as we journey through this life...but in the end them buzzards are flyin'!
One of the best versions of "Buzzards" that I've heard. The pacing and syncopation are terrif'. Great job, all!
That right there is a state of mind. Great version of mountain music that I grew up with.
Matts did a great job playing this tune. He, as me did not knew the tune, well I played that tune with Meet the Beat Boys in the middle 80th`s forgot but played along. Great job man. Matts is just.....!! The Bass sounded like a stone because I used it in the night outdoors before the recording. It is a Kay 1948 Model W. It is hand painted. Not plastic..
That bass is absolutely gorgeous
We all miss Gary. Great music fellas Let it roll

Very tight and nice played!

Very nice version. Like the slower tempo. Faster is not always better.
