Fiddle-banjo duet by Rayna Gellert and John Herrmann: Wolves a Howlin' Recorded at the Oldtime- week of the Swannanoa Gathering in July 2002. Near Ashville (North Carolina)
somewhere in the back of my mind I can hear John Hartford singing this...like a ghost in the night...like wolf howling on this bitter cold Wisconsin night...nicely done...2 of my fav musicians
The rythm is just so cool .I tried the drop thumb thing to get there but his drive is impecable ..Its like he is skating along the top of the ice . I dont sound like that and I am 45 years playing !!
i mean yeah he's my favorite player. i love everything about his style. perfect rhythmic no-frills playing. it's a joy to watch. he's a super nice guy too
I know that place!! I grew up in Swannanoa, and WW is where I first saw a hammered dulcimer and fell in love with the music. Got hooked on some radio station out of Spindale, Celtic Winds I think it was called, and I heard about it. Teenager with little else to do decided to check it out. I miss it there. Been in Texas too long.
You're right they're playing it in G.... Rayna is in cross G tuning (same as cross A but tuned down a tone). I love this piece and they have the best rendition of it!
If by bottom you mean the side of the neck that is lower (closer to the ground) than the other, then it's like this on every other fiddle, and perfectly normal.
There is a picture of a banjo with the same inlays (or close ) at "Bill's Banjos" site .. Here is his idea on it : "Robinson (by Fairbanks), grade 2, 5-string banjo, Circa 1900 " < .. The peghead and neck smell like Boston to me .. Fairbanks / Cole / or even Bay State made banjos that had that depth of tone .. Plus John is adding duct tape at the bridge to get steel strings to sound closer to Nylgut ..
PHJimY Did you ever figure out what's up with John's banjo? I've seen a bunch of videos where people are noticing his bridge but nobody seem sure. Seems like a partial mute almost. Makes it sound like gut strings - unless you think he's also using gut strings? I'm not sure.
I'm almost certain those are gut or nylgut strings. Tape may be a pickup he's added? Though I have heard of duct taping the bridge for a muting effect.
Mike Siciliano I have been taking classes with John. he uses steel strings, but he puts duct tape on the bridge and a little onto the strings to mute them. It makes it sound much like gut strings. Also sometimes he puts a mute under the strings on the fretboard side.
Wonderful! What is the addition to the bridge of John's banjer? It looks like a piece of duct tape on the head under the bridge or rolled up in front of the bridge.
Two of my very favorite artists!!!
My fav fiddler playing with my fav banjo player. Can’t get better.
Mine too, love the rhythmic stuff they do.
From England, I love your music!!!!!

Jeff Mc
I dont know but I think John may be tuned in dDGBD . With the slide up to the third fret on the second string makes that crazy wonderful rythum
Hm do you figure he tuned it down then? because that's a long way down!
+Joris Koolen WHat ever he is doing it blows my mind every time I hear this ..
he's just striking the first string and dropping his thumb to the second string, so it's the same note.

Where did this take place? Well done, just love it. And what is Swannanoa Gathering? Old Italian vila?
the Swannanoa Gathering is a series of workshops that takes place at Warren Wilson College, just outside of Black Mountain, NC. Check it out!!! :)
Well, thank you for the information, I love this song.

I just learned this tune in A, but I can't seem to play with this and I suspect they are doing it in G. Am I totally wrong on this?

"the Johnson boys" I think is being picked here
Is that a mirror image fiddle? Why are the high strings on the bottom?

Anyone know what kind of banjo John is playing? I love the timbre of that thing!

Thank you kindly Guy

+Nathan Vargo Interesting cause that sure does sound like gut strings. Cool, learned something new.
Any idea of the fiddle tunning??
Cross G (GDGD)
Rayna sounding like bagpipes, but better.

John talks about that on Craig Evan's video : He likes the softer sound of gut strings and its a way to get that softer tone ...
that pretty close to not being a tune atol lol
