An in depth review of Disney's W.I.T.C.H. that explores both the comics and the TV series they inspired. Today we examine arc 1, The Twelve Portals. Maybe someday we will see a Disney+ revival?

I prefered the comics. I remember sometimes there would be witch on TV but I never watched it bc I didn't like the way it was drawn. Witch the comics was so much better. I still have them all 🥰

i agree, there is just something so beautiful about the comics, the TV show was very angled and muddy sometimes.

I know they put some of the gross-out humour and Caleb's sexism in the show to better market it to boys... but even as a boy, I didn't care. I fell in love with the comics on their own terms.
The show was entertaining on some level, had a lot of the plot points more fleshed out, but the comics were (and I'm not ashamed to use that word) more enchanting. I heard some of the plot holes during Arc 1 in the comic were caused because of executive meddling, and the original creative bosses were forced out of the project about the time of Caleb's first appearance.
I'm not really sure how I feel about a revival or Season 3 of the show. It's been more than 14 years by now, and I'm afraid that by bringing it back now, they'd do the fans no favor (since Disney doesn't do all that well with their remakes lately).
Still - I'm grateful for this review and look forward to your dive into Season 2 :)

I am slowly but surely organizing my thoughts on arc 2 and expect to have it out this month. I agree with your points on both the show and comic and wish I knew more of what happened between the creators and Disney.

The show was already more appealing to boys compared to other magical girl shows by being more grounded and action heavy so I don't see what the point is

I came from reddit. Nice job, I love the way you did this video. Straight to the point and you pointed out things in both. I loved seeing all these differences up front. As someone who watched the show first, I think i prefer it over the comic so far. The comic is a bit darker which i love. The Show had the early 2000s vibe that i find myself being into. Cant wait to Arc 2 and see the differences there!

for Caleb in the TV Series was a completely different character than in the comics. In Comics he was just a side character with very little appearence, in the series they gave him way too much screentime on the other hand because they wanted boys to relate to him, which is okay but he was sexist at times always mansplaining the actual heroines and having always better plans than witch.

I am so glad that I stumbled on your first video, W.I.T.C.H. is a major obsession of mine and I wish more people would talk about it. The fact that it's not talked about so much is probably why we don't have a third season or reboot yet. Can you make a video about major plot holes like Metamoor and the Veil and how you solve or try to solve them? When you talked about the random powers of the Heart, Will actually used it as a viewer once in the comics when it showed her the moment when Caleb talked about teletransportation. Also, Vathek doesn't really have powers in the books, other than the one time he shot eye beams at Will. Meanwhile, Cedric had all these random powers in the books that he didn't have in the show.

@@digitalbloodlines Thanks so much for replying. I'm looking forward to the season 2 video and a season 3 video sounds great. If you didn't read all the comics yet, they are available online. It's important to mention that the original authors got kicked off their own project, which is why there are inconsistencies and Caleb appears out of nowhere. Do you think a reboot should be exactly like the comics?

I watched W.I.T.C.H. when I was very young. I wasn't a huge fan of it but I thought it was overall a decent show, Irma was my favorite character and Will was a close second. Never read the comics. You can find them online now.

I didn't like the overemphasis placed on Caleb in the show (and his sexism) and the inclusion of Blunk. The show already had plenty of funny characters and didn't need another comic relief character.
Beyond that, I do really enjoy the changes made in the show. I really appreciate the levity in the show. The voice actors were perfectly casted and play off each other really well. I love how goofy, impulsive, and imperfect they are in the show. Sometimes in the comics, the girls felt a bit too mature for their age. This isn't to say that kids are inherently dumb and incapable but they're still kids and I feel like that really comes through in the show.
Just comparing the first two arcs because that's all the show was able to do.
The first arc in the comics was superior. I love the gloomy tone and the mystery. I love how Elyon has more agency and is acting of her own accord.
The show meanwhile seemed to struggle with direction in the first season. I think the writers ended up making the story more generic through adapting it.
The second season however is vastly superior to the second arc in the comics however. Greg Weisman and his team did an excellent job of not only smoothing over some rough patches from season 1 but also improving on plot points in the comics.
In the show Nerissa feels so much more real and threatening. She is an awesome character and I love how maniacal she is. In the comics though, honestly it's hard to care about her. She feels more like a stock antagonist than a fleshed out character. Her minions also have more a connection the girls and the events of the first arc in the show than they do in the comics.

Mmm I'd say it's a bit unfair to say Yan Lin comes across as senile in the show. While she is definitely more comedic in the show, she does still guide and support the girls and is an adult they can come to for help with their guardian responsibilities.
I think in the tv show the girls do more strategizing themselves which does diminish Yan Lin's role a bit, but she does still support them.

For me the comic books are far superior to the series. More realistic too, since the characters didn't usually end up with their first love interest, appeared smarter and more complicated, took difficult decisions and grew. The TV series were way too childish and predictable, the characters exaggerated and Bluck (and later Miranda - where is Orube btw?) unnecessary and annoying at best! My only note is that it probably have ended sooner before the whole "magic school" arc had happened!
