My husband wanted to buy something the other day I KNEW we did not need and I said “ma’am your Christmas tree does not need to spin” and both of us cracked up in the middle of the store. He likes to watch your videos with me while we cook!
@90mama141 tbh I have a rotating tree stand and it's actually really fun. For sure not a must but if you have a LOT of ornaments it's a neat little option lmao
I could go on and on about all the things I hate about restocks and the people who keep watching these played out concepts. But above all, the sound of them all thinking it’s a cute sound to tap their nails on everything. It’s like nails on a chalkboard to me! No ma’am it’s not, lol.
I just found her a couple days ago and I love her calm approach, and when I saw that video, yesterday, I giggled, because she is so calm and doesn’t have a lot of facial expressions and the way she said that was too funny.
and morning walk with half a pack each of 4 chocolate covered snacks? like that was enough sugar for the whole day. who's eating all that in the morning except like, an overzealous toddler or a dog who got into the pantry?
@@RabbitTeacup Idk considering the obesity rates, I would think that people would actually take those amounts of food with them on just one walk... but yeah... people really should stop wondering why they're overweight and actually think about all the crap they put into their mouths...
Why am I not surprised that was also an undisclosed ad for Bloom. They are the worst offenders when it comes to that. People always sneak other products to make it look like it’s not an ad.
also you touch the dispenser with your toothbrush (which you put in your mouth) every time so all i can think abt is that it`s just more unhygienic than a normal tube as well
"Restock" is so funny, because they're really like five year olds playing retail employee inside their own homes. I feel like this is part overconsumption, definitely part wanting social media validation, and part adults doing imaginative play lmaoooo maybe I'm wrong, but 😭
i dont think those big stanley mugs are rly a thing here, but idk if i could stop myself from laughing if i was walking around in winter and saw someone carefully carrying around a stanley cup with a snack tray balanced on top and like popcorn getting blown away in the wind lmao
The spilling was making me CRAZY! Like how do you have all this stuff to be cutesy and you’re just dumping your snacks/ice all over the counter! So careless!
@@Brittainy89 lol. Yeah, reminds me of those tik toks where people make the super big drinks or sandwiches but they are just pouring it all over the place. Or those that make these disgusting recipes and then 'pretend' to eat them, but you know they are going to throw away every last bit of it.
Im a 35 year old male that made 150k+ a year in the petroleum industry. Single, without children, and without a mortgage. I spent frivolously for quite some time but managed to save enough to take a different job making FAR less money but a much better quality of life on a chunk of rural property. Im certainly not Shawnas target audience but what shes saying in her videos is absolutely true. The difference in my spending now that my income is much less, was a bit of a hard habbit to break but once I moved, I realized how many useless things I had acquired. Looking back, I could have saved far more than I did. I watched my coworkers buy things that they didn't need, 4 wheelers, campers, boats, jet skis. It got to the point that they couldn't even afford to miss work because they had became "payment poor" then if they got laid off all of their toys got sold at massive losses.
My, husband and I watch this show "Landman" about the petroleum industry. I'm glad you are potentially in a safer job now. I think many in the US are on a journey of figuring out what we need and what extra things will add value, instead of just accumulating because we can. 👍
@mohammedjeffali1076 I was never keeping up with the jones' My coworkers had $90k trucks and $60k boats and $700k homes. Meanwhile I was driving a 20 year old truck and a 15 year old car. I had bought a very modest home that I paid off as quickly as I could. It's wild to see lifestyle inflation happen in real time like that.
I think as we age we realize we don’t need all that stuff. We don’t need a brand new car every few years and we certainly don’t need to impress anyone.
@@jujube8067 recently my now 24 year old truck needed repairs that I was unable to do myself. In total I paid $1700 to have it fixed. I was telling my coworker about it and he said "your truck is too old, it's just going to keep costing you money. You should buy a new one." Mind you aside from tires ive spent a total of $3000 on parts and repairs in 15 years of owning this truck. I tried to explain to him that a new truck with a FIVE YEAR loan would cost nearly $800 per month for the payments and insurance. So i asked how it would be any better being on the hook for nearly $1000 per month instead of driving my long paid off vehicle the 13,000 yearly miles I put on between both of my vehicles..... He's a good guy and all but I'm not going to take financial advice from a guy that drives a truck that cost $75,000 new, isn't paid off, and might be worth $25,000 now who also lives in a trailer house he purchased for $37,000.
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I THINK i didn't even struggle much as a child but i was SUPER broke and frugal for a few years when i moved out, and even now i find myself hoarding food and stocking up because i'm afraid of running out. can't imagine what the food insecurity must be like for some of these people to keep doing things like this
For me having grown up ridiculously poor made me mildly hoard food and the like, important supplies. I never buy frivolous things or decorations, or the extra containers these people use. I also don't treat myself either though, which is not a bad thing to do sometimes.
I grew up poor and had to steal as a kid to eat, I swear I am not making this up, I buy food in bulk on the stuff that we use regularly, when the thing is on offer like half of, I get 10 or 20 depend on the use by date. we have a lot of food in the house, I rotate my stock, when covid hit we did not miss anything. It is really truly s..t to go at friend house near diner time in the hope they feed you , never have xmas and worse that I won't go into but that stay with you even when you are financially secure, this is why I go overbord for xmas for my children
What exhausts me as a teacher is the thought that any kid I teach thinks this is normal just because they see it on TikTok. Obviously I grew up pre-social media. But for me a big part of Christmas was decorating our home with OLD and traditional things and the same things every year mostly. Loved putting the very traditional old Christmas tree decorations and old lights and such. Obviously sometimes we bought something new as decoration… But the ”thing” about it was the tradition of having old-timely decorations to put up together as a family
Same! Our first Christmas tree (when I was a child) was from my grandparents, and we had that tree until I turned 18. My grandparents then decided to get a new tree that came with pre-installed lights (they were getting older and couldn't light the tree like they used to) and they gave us their old tree and we use that tree to this day. We still have the same ornaments since I was child (as in the ones made in school) and our newest ornaments are pictures of our cats (which we got in recent years)
Yes! The decorations that you or a family member have had for decades are super nostalgic. I also like traditions that involve some sort of making or buying one new Christmas ornament every year (perhaps with the date on it). Then it becomes part of a collection and has a story. To me, that's enjoying a bit of novelty without veering into wasteful overconsumption.
Yes! My niece is in HS and last summer I had to have a conversation with her when i saw her taking one of her stanley cups and grabbing a plastic water bottle to fill the stanley cup. i was just like no, you are missing the whole point of having that huge freaking cup in the first place. but its just like everything is basically an accessory.
@@elinamauno8833 I’m the same. Unfortunately my family has moved a bunch and has had marriage and divorces so much that most of the family heirloom ornaments have gone missing. But the good news is I just got married so I can now start collecting and making my own heirlooms
That toothpaste thing gave me major ick 😂 my mom was a dental assistant and she’d be screaming, toothpaste is sticky and gross and it would instantly become a huge mess - not to mention if you share this with someone and you’re both swiping your toothbrushes across this surface all the time - ewwwwwwwww
Yeaaahhh we have almost the same dispenser for a skincare thing and it’s definitely hard to press down effectively so not sure about disability assistance - it’s also gunky and that little dispenser hole is SMALL, it’s not for a sticky thick substance 😂
Same omg I was thinking the top is gonna be a germ lagoon and this doesn’t even look easier. Also what about the 3 coloured toothpaste lol? Does each colour serve a purpose or is the jar gonna turn a Frankenstein purply brown.
@@Aleatoire9 This. And it looked to me like maybe it was a clear container on the bottom, which wouldn't be good for the shelf life of the toothpaste, or so I've been told.
The “it’s not real” person pisses me off. If it’s not real… then why did you film yourself setting it up like it was? Why didn’t you show yourself unpacking the drawers and distributing the sweets to friends etc?
I have a disability that affects my fingers and I do decant stuff like shampoo but by far the easiest thing is just a simple pot! Any fancy dispensers are equally as difficult to use and harder to clean :)
Yes!! Simplest cheapest solution is usually the best. I am my friend’s care provider and between us we have 1.5 good hands (he’s quadriplegic, I have EDS and have enough nerve and ligament damage that my right hand is partially paralyzed and I have the grip strength of an 80 year old, to quote a past physical therapist). Jars and resealable bags are easiest. If I buy him a drink with a plastic wrapper on the bottle neck I peel it with my good hand and pop the lid and put it in the fridge so he can open it by himself whenever he wants. The whole house is tailored to being accessible to both of us. Totally not aesthetic at all but it’s more important to be functional than pretty IMO (P.S. we do have his cousin on call in case there is ever a jar or package that can’t be opened by either of us or something too heavy to lift. A giant help for him to be able to do grocery shopping because I can’t lift much and have about 3 hours of the day I can be up and about without being in bed for days after 😅)
I sometimes have a hard time squeezing stuff because of my disability too but with toothpaste, if I can’t get it by squeezing it I just put it on the bathroom counter and push down on it with my hand lol. Pushing down on a little button container thing would be so much harder, not to mention unscrewing the lid?
Exactly! For me opening the bottle to toothpaste is super painful because I have really thin and sensitive skin so I've been considering switching to little tablets of toothpaste instead that I can just put in a jar. When I decant stuff I always use old skincare jars (the Clinique moisture surge has such an easy container for me to open so it's usually that one). I can't personally think of a situation where a little button would be easier than a nice jar or pump for liquid products
i'd rather keep the toothpaste in og packaging and press down on the tube (etc). gross germs. the button decanting thing isn't very helpful or safe looking.
I had bone cancer in my hand. First symptom was it hurt too much to squeeze my toothpaste. To be honest, that dispenser would have helped, especially after surgery when it was hard to hold my brush upright and put the toothpaste on it with one hand, without making a mess. But that is definitely not how she was advertising the item. Just wanted to say thanks Shawna for considering the accessibility perspective.
It's seems so wild to me how influencers are selling us the idea that you should buy heaps of new decor etc every year for Christmas. I feel like one of the special aspects of Christmastime that makes it feel wonderful is to dig out the old decorations, towels, candle holders and so on. I still use some old Christmas towels that my mom bought in the 90s-00s! Those old things hold so many memories and symbolize the holiday times and bring a warm fuzzy feeling inside that brand new stuff just wouldn't, never will. I rarely shop for new decor but even when I do I get it second hand, mostly for environmental reasons but also because they usually have more character and are more unique than the generic mass produced shiny new things would. I kind of feel sad for the people who buy into this idea and buy lots of new Christmas stuff every year.
my family still uses a lot of the decor that my mom's side had when they still lived with my grandma, or a play doh tree ornament I made when I was little!
I love to get Xmas craft kits and make my own new decorations every year that can then be reused years later! Makes for a fun Xmas activity, plus you get good quality handmade Xmas items! I've made four baubles and two mini Xmas themed embroidery hoops so far!
6:56 I love how she says she recycles the plastic wrappers when it is definitely not recyclable. Not only is it not recyclable, but her "wish-cycling" is harmful for so many reasons and causes more waste. Just something that tends to grate me.
I do decant laundry pods, because I find the super-sized container too awkward to open. Unfortunately for my future as an Amazon affiliate, though, I decant them into the empty plastic containers that my fav pretzels come in. But I guess I can’t sell my reused-ten-times old pretzel containers, heh
The sad thing is that someone could probably still find a way to monetize that. They'd probably do something like put fancy stickers on the side of each plastic container and paint the lid gold with spray paint or some other dumb "upcycle"
The thing is that a lot of these influences are given these products for free or at a major discount without disclosing that because they’re providing paid marketing for these stores/sponsorships! The blurred line between what is an advertisement and what is an amateur show haul is in a gray area but that doesn’t make it okay for these influences to not disclose that!
Can we please talk about how dumb those awkwardly shaped seasonal mugs are? I have owned them and never drank from them, not to mention cleaning the nooks and crannies is a nightmare. Just get someone a mug shaped mug please!
I agree. I recently thrifted two red and two green Fiestaware mugs and they are great. And they feel festive but can be used more than just in December
I use them as planters for small plants! I get them as gifts occasionally from my kids or random people. But I put small propagated plants or little succulents etc in them to use them as seasonal and functional decor. It’s a good use for them if you have them and don’t know what to do with them.
I thought the same thing. I can only imagine how it will look after a few days. If they got this because the tube gets messy, same thing is going to happen to this.
Using new holiday decor every year is insane to me. To me, that is part of the charm of holidays. Having decorations that have been in the family for years and have stories attached to them is what makes them special.
the best is MAKE every year a new decoration or two. Since I married, I made every year some piece of Christmas decoration (tapestry tree, patchwork fireplace, crochet and felt tree ornaments). I hope to continue in the next year, maybe with simple paper snowflakes when my daughter will be old enought to want to help.
So true. I am team real trees over artificial Decorations/homedécor is the last purchase I’m willing to make. Everything else typically comes as a priority for the money and energy. Durable goods for me will run a bit more aesthetic because I’ll buy such little art and no tchotchkes. It kind of hurt when the family Christmas tree angel of my childhood was broken. I do wish I were more crafty and got the skills to make more decorations with the family
I totally agree. There’s a particular ornament that only I can put on the tree because I broke it a few times as a kid. It’s become a family joke/tradition and is very special to me, cracks and glue marks and all. :-)
And the fake squishy sound that your lip balm doesn't make. I'm convinced that half of the sound effects (if not more) are fake/added. I have to mute during those clips because I just want to slap those people.
I also hate how they like, move things around in view of the camera before opening or tapping on them, I don't know if this makes sense, but I really can't describe what they do when they do it. I just know it irritates me to no end lol.
I used to feel really inadequate as a "house-wife" because I don't like to stock anything. We buy whatever we are actively using. We roughly plan meals. I don't have loads of anything in the house. I don't have a pantry and tbh I think it's a waste of money and it forces you to use thing you might not want to use (cooking wise, or anything with expiry dates). And all those boxes get fingerprints and grease marks if left in a kitchen that is actively used for cooking. There are crumbs or dust 😂 if one actually thinks about it, there is nothing practical about it!
@@DaniiiielaRod I think a pantry is useful if you cook from scratch a lot and use a lot of dry goods (like dry beans and grains) - like if you make your own bread every week it probably is worth it.
@@newcamomileyup, i use a pantry because I cook/bake around three times a day! plus i have to eat gluten free, so a lot of things are just cheaper to buy in bulk.
I see your points & never thought of it that way! I have to use a pantry b/c I eat a lot of beans/rice/lentils/nuts/seeds, and that kind of diet doesn’t make sense without buying a 1- or 5-lb bag and having a bunch leftover from whatever you just made.
@@DaniiiielaRod housewife/homeschooling mom here - I always feel so guilty about it when I see other moms that have the perfect pantry, perfect classroom set up, perfect meal prepping. I literally don’t have the time 😭
@dndrmffln2960 as someone who was raised by a homemaker, the aesthetics and the perfect home/classroom are not important at all. I just remember that my mom was always there for me. We had a pantry but it was just filled with random things and canned food, it didn't look anything like what you see on tiktok 😂 and neither does my own pantry. Don't let social media guilt trip you, I'm sure you're doing an amazing job.
Does the "uwu cutesy long sleeves over half the hand" thing drive anyone else insane in these restock videos? It's extra egregious in videos where they're handling food or over a flame like girl you're gonna make a mess or catch yourself on fire. Its the most minor thing in these stupid videos to be a hater about but my god do I be hating.
Do they think that their hands appear smaller this way? Did they forget to moisturize and they’re hiding ashiness? Do they need a beauty filter for hands and this is what they do in the meantime? Did the use of fingerless gloves and arm warmers die when the scene kids grew up? Why, just why? Seriously. Why?
Your channel is the only source I see that type "restock" of content - and I am shook how this is what people actually are spending their time, energy, money!! on. I can't. We are doomed
12:36 is she “walking” to her couch? Because there is no way to comfortably walk while balancing an unstable tray full of tiny snacks unless you’re a professional juggler.
That video with the cups and going out for walks was insane to me. She can’t possibly think anyone believes she is going for a walk with all that STUFF? In New York? Also the amount of calories in all that garbage food to go for a walk is equally nuts. Like I just don’t get it!
Seemed pretty unhealthy and unnourishing stuff which defeats the walk imo. Like I get picking some trail mix and fruit maybe if you're going on a long hike, but a walk around the park? And you're eating 3 cupcakes + all this other stuff? All the while you're walking you're holding this now super heavy Stanley? I'll take Influencer Make Believe for 400 dollars Alex.
I appreciate what you said at the end about how it's okay to have seasonal stuff you like to pull out of storage every year, because I was thinking the same thing. Some of us like that little variety of just switching up what we already have. The problem with these folks is that they go wayyyy overboard and seem to prioritize the shiny, new aesthetic.
I think that if you watch a seasonal restocking video for the ideas, you get the last laugh. The influencer gets nothing but your view, but you grab a couple of cute jars at the dollar store and recreate it in your own way.
I store pasta, sugars, flour, rice, beans, etc in clear, airtight containers because its easier to see what I have and to not have a bunch of open boxes and bags that will spill
This is a scenario where using a different container from the original packaging makes sense. I did this in an old house I lived in because I got pantry moths. Those things are so gross and will get into paper or plastic bags, so I had to transfer things like flour and rice into airtight containers.
@_lenny_____leonardo oh gosh pantry moths are the worst. we had them once and I could not believe what they could get into. found them in I opened pasta boxes
My family does the same because we have people with celiac so we have a bunch of different flours for and we need to be able to make sure that the wheat products are airtight and separate from the celiac safe ingredients. Most of our food is in the original packaging, but we do decant things like flour that would otherwise get all over the pantry and make everything unsafe. Decanting with a purpose can be super helpful if you do it right
I have psoriatic arthritis. In the past few months I’ve been creating an Amazon list of accessibility and mobility aids for the future. One of the ideas is a battery operated automated toothpaste pump. The one in the video would, for me, be too much added work. So I agree with your take, as I usually do! 😊
These tik toks are insane. The huge bowl of holiday -themed lush bath bombs actually made me nauseous thinking about the next level fragrances all mixed together in one small space. I am very sensitive to fragrances and this would a deal breaker for me! Also the snack trays for a walk in NYC are laughable 😂
for the little Debbie snack lady...why not do content where she puts together baskets for the neighbors and for church? I guess the algo wouldn't like it as much
I grew up with people buying or donating random stuff to me and as a kid its exciting for only 5 minutes before I realized I don't like or need the stuff I was being spoiled with because I had no one to spend time with all these spoiled materials with. But when your a kid you quickly realize that people buying you a lot of material stuff doesn't mean anything compared to quality bonding time. So basically I think what makes people happier in the holidays and a good ____ "partner, parent, friend, etc" isn't buying everything to the point of spoiling its how you show your appreciation and spending time with them. Thats what the holidays always been about which is ironic as we go further from that into more commercial holidays.
i just stumbled upon your channel and it has really helped me come down to earth and realize i dont need every new makeup, skincare or new whatever thing is on the market! im trying to do the project pan thing and a no buy in january so thank you for the motivation! keep it up!
And how many people are drinking hot cocoa (or, insert name of seasonal drink here)!?! Those marshmallows would be stale after a few days in most climates. MAYBE if it was set up for a specific event or party, but to just have that out indefinitely... no way!
im gonna be real i would absolutely hate changing out my home goods seasonally, that sounds like a hell designed for me specifically. the point of a shower curtain is that i dont have to think about my shower curtain every two months! anyways i support the use of seasonal home goods in exactly one circumstance: if you use it year round. my ghost-with-a-cat-shaped-candy-basket soap dispenser is my beautiful son and i love him so much. he will never be replaced
As a person with arthritis in my hands I definitely think it would be easier to get a little tooth paste on my brush with a tiny squeeze of the tube. As you said filling and then cleaning that device would be rougher on me personally.
I just saw a travel hack video with chewable toothpaste tablets. Probably much more expensive than tubes. But toothpaste used to be sold as tooth powder (I guess before we had the technology to mass-produce toothpaste in tubes?) and that might be easier still if anyone still makes it. Is toothpaste in a tube really an improvement? Mine is always getting gunky at the mouth of the tube
We still have tooth powder in the uk, it's good, but used as an extra as its a bit gritty, it's smokers toothpaste. The candies and what we call goodies are diabetes in waiting, all that sugar, corn syrup, and sugar alternatives and sweetness is making my teeth feel numb just looking at it. What is it with snacking, grazing all the time. What is wrong with eating proper meals preferably homemade and using treats as treats and not eating them all day long. We are not far behind in the uk, but I look forwards to my mealtimes(homemade) and rarely snack. No wonder the world is getting overweight. All these storage canisters are not needed. Yet more expense. Over consumption is getting tiresome ,uneccesayry and prohibitively expensive. We need to stop and think. I wish everyone thought like Shawna. Gill from 🇬🇧
This is random but the little fingernail tap on the side of the product that so many influencers do DRIVES ME CRAZY. I don't know why but literally every time I see it I just get so irrationally angry. WHY do they find the need to tap their nails on every damn thing they show? UGH.
7:56 It’s the “just for fun” bit that grinds my gears. It feels like an excuse to brush off liability or responsibility from influencers’ hands. If the average user Sarah saw these hauls of products, she’s going to think “wow that’s a lot of stuff I can’t afford” or “this is inspiring me to reach this goal”. Sure the influencer can say that they’re “just doing this for fun” but they’re also being irresponsible for ignoring the real capabilities of influencing or inspiring others. You can’t call yourself an influencer without acknowledging that you may inspire others!
4:44 when my husband and I got married he squeezed his toothpaste from the bottom up and I just squeezed it in the middle. It annoyed him and so I got us separate toothpastes. It’s been 29 years and he hasn’t mentioned it since that first year lol.
7:01 You cannot recycle that kind of plastic, so she just poisoned the well. Plastic bags and anything with foodstuffs on it CANNOT BE RECYCLED and large quantities of non-recycleables in the recycling usually means the whole bin is going in the trash. Also the order is REDUCE, reuse, THEN recycle. Think about what you're consuming first.
Literally just this weekend my family got our christmas tree, decorated, it, and decorated the house (we really just decorate the room the tree is in and swap out the wreath on the front door). To me, a large part of the magic is that we have the same ornaments and decorations every year. There's just something really special about opening the box of ornaments and carefully unwrapping each one from the tissue paper older than I am, and seeing all the ornaments we have from vacations and events, that represent our interests and hobbies and accomplishments. This year I couldn't stop thinking about the concept of buying all new ornaments and decorations each year to fit a different theme. At the end of the day, I think the desire to fit a different theme is based on how stores will have a different theme every year, or have differently themed releases. I think it all ties into losing a sense of the difference between a home and a curated space selling you things. That's just my completely speculative two cents though. I think another thing that really leads to behavior like this is a lack of traditions. In my experience, traditions are part of the holiday magic. For example, each year in early december, my mom goes to trader joes and buys several types of their holiday themed snacks, and makes a little basket of them at home for us to snack on. It's special, because not only are the snacks holiday flavors and themes, but we don't usually have so many sweet snacks in the house. Another tradition, on christmas morning, my mom always prepares some sort of fancy breakfast the night before, so she can throw it in the oven christmas day (homemade cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, stuff like that), while my dad makes a fruit salad out of fancy fruit (mango, asian pear, lychee, some more 'regular' fruits like grapes and apples as well). I'm giving these examples not to say my family is better than them, or to say they should specifically have fruit salad on christmas morning, but that I think not having these things to look forwards to, that feel special/stand out from the rest of the year-- I think it leads to this kind of scrabbling for something meaningful and unique, but that flailing ultimately means that nothing sticks long enough to become a tradition. Especially given the social media aspect, where there is absolutely a sense that everything constantly needs to be escalated another step. When everything all throughout the year is constantly getting escalated to try and make it as special and viral-sensational as possible, it's hard to make the holidays feel festive-- and I think that's at the heart of what influencers are doing. They're trying to make the holidays feel special against a background of a whole year made to feel special, and the only way they know how to do that is to escalate. More money, more stuff, more waste. So I guess at the end of this mini essay, my big question to myself is: what should they do instead? Honestly, my number one thought is. Get off the part of the internet that keeps trying to convince everyone that every single moment in your day, in your year, in your life, needs to be social media worthy. This is a complicated issue when it comes to influencers because they might be financially dependent on producing content like this, but ultimately, my hot take is that it's best for everyone if they either find a different niche or take up a non-influencing job. I know you've talked about this in multiple videos, but contentment is so so important. I think a lot of people would be well served to take a step back from trying to maximize pleasure in every moment and accept that things can be good without needing to be great, or even perfect. (I also think this ties into toxic positivity, but that's another essay) Another thing I think is important is paying attention to what you individually as a person (and your household) want, need, enjoy, and value. Family traditions are only a good thing if everyone enjoys them and they add something to everyone's lives. Just picking a tradition that sounds good and trying to implement it rarely goes well. Just finding a thing you (and your household, whether blood family, roommates, significant other(s), or any other permutation of people) enjoy doing and find special and want to do year after year is enough. Even if it isn't the kind of thing that gets a lot of views on social media. But yeah that's my thoughts on (part of) why some influencers (especially those with kids, doubly so if the kids are young) are so drawn to overconsume in this way, especially around the holidays.
I saw something recently making the claim that while neat handwriting is a sign of good organization and discipline, EXTREMELY neat handwriting actually indicates anxiety and insecurity. I am not a believer in graphology but I do wonder if a similar dynamic might be going on here. The inner world is chaotic, so the snacks drawer must be ~*~perfect~*~
I honestly think the snack tray for the tumblers would be a cute idea for a movie night in or somehting like that. With the caviat that you're a normal person that reuses things that are meant to be reused
I tried stocking things and for me it went "out of sight, out of mind". Wasted quiet a lot of stuff. Learnt my lesson. P. S. Having a separate space for pantry is not a common practice in my country, most people only keep at most 1 backup of some things, not at all of all the things. Plus homes here are getting so so expensive and smaller, we would rather have a small storage space for things rather than having space for a pantry or a walk in vloset etc.
I’m such a sucker for mugs. I openly admit to having WAY more mugs than I need. I do actually change them out seasonally. That said, I live alone so can use all 9 on my mug rack before I have a full load of dishes in my dishwasher so I feel justified. I have also now gotten to a point where I can say, “That’s an adorable mug but I do not need it.”
I swear I think they were slamming the items down on purpose so you comment stuff like “girl stop slamming those things are fragile!!” And stuff like that
My favorite "restocks" are taking a bag of laundry pods from a closed cabinet, pouring them into a box, and then putting that box back into the cabinet next to the prior one, and CLOSING the door. So you don't see either the bag of the box. Bonus points if they have a 3rd dispenser on top of the machine which is filled from the second container.
I don’t have TikTok and in fact, have never had it. While some of these videos can be satisfying to watch I can’t imagine hours of this content. It absolutely makes sense why people would then be running to Target or going online and filling up their Amazon carts! It’s like the saying, “you are what you eat.” If you spend hours a day, everyday watching people restocking, shopping, etc then what else is going to be going on in your head other than shopping? And I am NOT blaming consumers or saying get off social media. I think if more and more people like you are also on TikTok and social media helping people to be thinking consumers then they can gain balance and make better decisions. I think there’s a lot of opportunities for learning here!
Look at me just walking with my legs on my feet with only my house keys and phone, like a complete loser. 😂 Seriously, though, there’s not much I’ll do for fun if I have to prep, make ice, buy snacks, buy seasonal items, and then put it all together.
I have 1 Stanley that I was influenced to buy and I regret it so much. I used to drink out of a huge 64oz translucent bottle that had notches in 2 hour increments so you could keep up with drinking enough water each day. Well, ever since switching to a Stanley that I cannot see through and does not have the notches, I drink a significantly less amount of water each day. I went from 64oz a day to maybe 5-8oz a day. And yet I am STILL having to talk myself down weekly from buying a newer, cuter Stanley!! I almost bought the 40oz Halloween one and I had to tell myself buying a bigger one (I have a 30oz rn) will not change anything! I will not drink more water just because I got a bigger Stanley. I will admit I have had a major shopping addiction over the past few years and I’m glad I found this channel this holiday season. I’ve been able to think logically and talk myself off the ledge from buying products I don’t need or even want but are just cute and trendy.
It’s just the excess for me- why are we turning our homes into mini convince stores? Why is everything decanted into a bin like a bulk store??? I see plastic bins full of stuff and all I can think about is like the Whole Foods Bulk Buy section and it’s so weird!!!!
Have been going from hating myself to realize that a lot of people would probably be and do better if they had even an ounce of the shame and constant self-reflection that I have.
My new rules for myself in terms of “restocking”- I have tracked how long it takes me to use a product over the course of this last year. I have a limited amount of space that I can stock backups/alternates of things I use (I can use a body butter up in a month in the winter so it makes sense to have 3-4 to rotate through a season, for example). I’m a sale shopper and couponer BUT if I have enough, I don’t feel the urge to buy because of a deal. If I buy something full price later, I have more money in my budget from not over spending. That way I have a very small comfort of backups, but will not be like my mom or grandma and hoard just to have things. I want to use what I have. I have enough extra for myself and any guest or friend that’s going through a rough time to give to them. That’s sustainable and comfortable for me to maintain.
We use paper plates on a regular basis. Everyone in my house has chronic pain and we can't keep up with the dishes, we buy the biodegradable ones and just stack them on the microwave.
This year I almost got sucked into it. I saw a cute winter/christmas shower curtain (!😅) then if I buy the shower curtain I just need a few matching things. Not much! Just a few like soap dispenser, mat and towels to match. Then I snapped out of it 😂 Phew! The bathroom is staying white. Wintery enough. 😂
I wanted to be this mom so bad. Found a cute Fall themed Peanuts shower curtain a couple years ago at the thrift store but I never put it up bc I never remember and when I do I don’t feel like doing it lolll
@@AnasNoBuyYear2025 there’s no shame in being the mom you are ❤️ my mom loves holidays and decorating and it was part of how she kept her own identity in being a mom. teaching your kids to hold on to their self is way more important than holiday stuff and things.
I am embarrassed by how many shower curtains I own. I will not let myself buy a new one, I mean for goodness sakes I only have one shower! Part of the pride I felt when I was able to buy a home was buying things for my home, but now I see that suffocating in stuff and knowing you went into debt for that stuff makes a home a stressful place.
8:32 she also produced real life capitalistic consequences for her actions, even outside of influencing others. "we recycled the wrappers." for one, no you didn't. for two, that is not a type of plastic that can be recycled (esp in the US.) if she put that in the recycle bin, it was sorted and sent to landfill later. or the entire batch of recyclables was thrown out because the recycling system here in the US is a JOKE.
Damn, the ads are always really jarring when I watch your videos. And by that I don't mean that you shouldn't have ads, but that I just notice the blatant level of consumerism that we deal with on the daily and how absolutely exhausting it is. You'll be deinfluencing a similar item to what I'm being advertised and I just feel that it's so important that people like you are talking about this. I did a project pan this year because of you! I went back and watched a lot of your old videos after you popped up on my feed and had so much fun using up all my older products. It felt really satisfying to wash them out and bring them to Sephora for recycling. I don't have a big collection, but even with a smaller collection it takes a while to use stuff up! I thought I would be able to finish my cream blush this year and LMAO there was NO WAY. 😂 I was even considering buying another one until seeing how long it actually takes to use even one of them up. Thank you for your content and for helping me through a very difficult year. I was so happy for you when your follower count got a huge boost! 🎉🎊 Your videos were a nice distraction for me and helped me to be productive and feel goal driven in a time where I otherwise didn't want to do anything.
12:14 Anyone else feel physical sick listening to all the crinkly plastic and nail tapping? I quit all social media 8 months ago and now only watch long videos on RUclips (no shorts) it has been wonderful for both my mental health and wallet (not influenced to buy stuff I don’t need) I like watching your videos to remind me why I don’t scroll anymore ❤
Someone pointed this out in another video and I can’t unsee it. Are we sure all these restock ladies don’t use some kind of content creation house? They all have white counter tops and cabinets and silver stainless steel fridges. Those are usually expensive features if they aren’t renting these 👀
That toothpaste dispenser has been such a bright light for my girls with Down syndrome. They are so proud to be able to do this without squirting toothpaste all over.i looove this product!! Yes, mom doesn’t enjoy cleaning it, but it’s so, so worth it. It also allows me to,open up,the tube and get so, so much goo out, hence getting more product out of each tube.
@@shawnaripariI’m not, positive it is the exact same one - looks like it. I actually paused to see if I could see a brand name, but could not. We celebrate the small wins over here big time, and I have grown to be grateful for - relatively not super expensive - products that may seem ridiculous in most households. They just thrive when they can have independent “ success,” even with seemingly minor things.
3:34 If you're concerned about germs/messiness from a tube, why would a tub dispenser help with that? Toothpaste tablets are way better in that regard (if you are going to buy a solution to the problem) and also more sustainable
Putting marshmallows out of their airtight containers and into jars for them to go hard and rancid has got to be the stupidest thing I've seen in a WHILE.
I absolutely loathe the stupid, obnoxious nail tapping thing that these people do! I also just don't like all of the clicking and clacking and plastic packaging noises 😤
This is so that they can deduct their nail salon visits as a business expense since manicured nails are an "integral part of their channels success ." So, it should make you angry. Yes, this is the world we live in.
I think the only thing I would consider “decanting” would be the large laundry liquid because my soap never comes in a clear jar and I forget to buy soap until it’s too late but that’s totally a me issue 😂
The crinkle of ALL that plastic gives me hives! I can’t stand how much is consumed and promoted to consume in America 😭 It feels like it’s none of my business what someone else buys but it affects everyone to some degree. Thanks for posting videos like this ❤
My husband made me mute it from all the crinkling and tapping 😂 that was his ASD really, but the gross overconsumption of single use products in particular is so repulsive.
I don’t mind so much about trying to make things “aesthetic”, so much as I mind that they try to get people to buy in excess. It’s frustrating that this is how they make money, profiting off of others shopping addictions and gullibility. People will end up buying these things with money they don’t have, and they will more than likely regret it.
I love watching your videos! It gives me the visual satisfaction of watching restocks but with the reality check you need in order to watch that stuff without getting frustrated with your own home. Absolutely addictive.
Imagine a few yrs from now someone's child asking "mom, how did you fill the hours of your day & try to make some money back in the day?" And the answer is "I tippy-tapped my nails on things for social media" 😂
good rule of thumb: every time you buy something, even if you can totally afford it, think about having to box it away, put it in a moving truck, and move it to a new house. ALLLLLL your stuff, you gotta pack it away, pay for a truck big enough to fit it, and carry it into a new home. Not pay someone to do it, do it yourself. Cos boy, did that change my outlook on my stuff. I moved 3 times this year and yeah, my stuff is heavy!
I believe the “toothpaste dispenser” is actually used for easier more hygenic way for handling creams if im not mistaken. Cause it doesn’t make sense that all of it would work as well as what its more commonly sold as or for.

One major risk of getting germs into a product is by transfering it to another container ;))

I really appreciate you sharing your experience here
My, husband and I watch this show "Landman" about the petroleum industry. I'm glad you are potentially in a safer job now. I think many in the US are on a journey of figuring out what we need and what extra things will add value, instead of just accumulating because we can. 👍
@mohammedjeffali1076 I was never keeping up with the jones'
My coworkers had $90k trucks and $60k boats and $700k homes.
You should buy a new one."
Mind you aside from tires ive spent a total of $3000 on parts and repairs in 15 years of owning this truck.
I have a theory that a lot of the people that do this actually grew up poor.
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I THINK
i didn't even struggle much as a child but i was SUPER broke and frugal for a few years when i moved out, and even now i find myself hoarding food and stocking up because i'm afraid of running out. can't imagine what the food insecurity must be like for some of these people to keep doing things like this
It's definitely possible. Personally, I grew up poor and I mildly "hoard" but I never buy anything unless necessary or it's a one in a year treat lol
For me having grown up ridiculously poor made me mildly hoard food and the like, important supplies. I never buy frivolous things or decorations, or the extra containers these people use. I also don't treat myself either though, which is not a bad thing to do sometimes.
I have a theory that a lot of the people that do this are actually overweight... 😂
Same fight here as a teacher too. I'm equally saddened to see how much these influencers have actual influence over the teens in my classrooms 😖
@@Aleatoire9 Oh, really? I was thinking about getting that thing for my daughter because she has a hard time with toothpaste sometimes.

If it’s not real… then why did you film yourself setting it up like it was? Why didn’t you show yourself unpacking the drawers and distributing the sweets to friends etc?
yes! she's trying to convince people it's real
I have a disability that affects my fingers and I do decant stuff like shampoo but by far the easiest thing is just a simple pot! Any fancy dispensers are equally as difficult to use and harder to clean :)
thank you so much for sharing your experience!
Totally not aesthetic at all but it’s more important to be functional than pretty IMO
(P.S. we do have his cousin on call in case there is ever a jar or package that can’t be opened by either of us or something too heavy to lift.
I agree. New generic decorations feel cheap.
I have videos of me playing in front of a Christmas tree 30 years ago - a tree with the same decorations my mum still hangs on the tree to this day!
First thing I thought.
@@sofiastj I’m so glad I’m not the only one who caught that. Those thin little snack cake wrappers are literally not recyclable and never have been 🤣

Yes it absolutely grinds my gears.
In a parallel universe, it doesn’t exist. 😂 My house is located there.
I hate hate HATE the nail tapping trend, I just want to hear stuff clinking and clacking!!
YES! It’s annoying. ASMR isn’t supposed to be like that. The nail tapping on everything gets on my nerves.
The EXPENSE is what I can’t get past. All this stuff is SO expensive.

Asmr haters rise up 😂 I also hate those sounds, they scratch my brain in the worst way possible
Decanting toothpaste?!? Absolutely not. That's unhinged!! 😆 LOL

It's the endless tapping and crinkling that drives me nuts in these videos. I get where the grinch was coming from these days. "Noise noise noise"
IKR I literally take my phone, keys, dog treats and poop bags
Seemed pretty unhealthy and unnourishing stuff which defeats the walk imo. Like I get picking some trail mix and fruit maybe if you're going on a long hike, but a walk around the park? And you're eating 3 cupcakes + all this other stuff? All the while you're walking you're holding this now super heavy Stanley? I'll take Influencer Make Believe for 400 dollars Alex.
what happened to getting the decorations out of the basement, making gingerbread and fighting over the christmas chocolates and calling it a day
I appreciate what you said at the end about how it's okay to have seasonal stuff you like to pull out of storage every year, because I was thinking the same thing.
I store pasta, sugars, flour, rice, beans, etc in clear, airtight containers because its easier to see what I have and to not have a bunch of open boxes and bags that will spill
we do too, also because we buy a lot of those things from the bulk bins. also flour and sugar sacks are messy.
Also good if you live in old houses that can get rodent problems
12:43 don’t forget how we need a different color mold for the ice cubes…cant use an brown one for winter obviously
Who is drinking iced beverages in cold weather 🫣
These tik toks are insane. The huge bowl of holiday -themed lush bath bombs actually made me nauseous thinking about the next level fragrances all mixed together in one small space. I am very sensitive to fragrances and this would a deal breaker for me! Also the snack trays for a walk in NYC are laughable 😂
I can't even go into a Lush store without gasping for air. The smells are so strong. I hate it.
when I see that snack trail, I can only think about "what happen if you bring that in a city near the sea? SEAGULL!" and I LAUGHT.
@@Celestichthysmargaritatus I 100 percent agree. I have a hard time just walking by the store 😅
I can't agree more lol. The seagulls, the BIRDS in my park would be happy to steal a bit or two :)
for the little Debbie snack lady...why not do content where she puts together baskets for the neighbors and for church?
Thats what the holidays always been about which is ironic as we go further from that into more commercial holidays.
i just stumbled upon your channel and it has really helped me come down to earth and realize i dont need every new makeup, skincare or new whatever thing is on the market! im trying to do the project pan thing and a no buy in january so thank you for the motivation! keep it up!
i'm so glad to hear that my channel has been helpful!! Thanks for being a part of this community and wishing you the best on your projects in January!
What is a project pan?
@ it’s basically a challenge where you don’t buy a new product until you hit pan on it/run out!
me watching the hot chocolate pods and the cookies dropped from orbit: THOSE ARE FRAGILE QUIT IT also thats too many
And how many people are drinking hot cocoa (or, insert name of seasonal drink here)!?!

It is so nice that Shawna considers that aspect.
UGH.
@@Jessica-n2y7j 100% I need to mute the videos or I risk Hulking out.
I 👍 fed up of it.Its catching on in the uk. I feel like shouting , stop it, you will end up with arthritic fingers. Gill in the 🇬🇧
I think it's a nod to the ASMR side of the Internet
Yesssssss I’m with you ! And ever notice how it’s always done with coffin style nails ?💅
Exactly! I hate ASMR videos now because of these unnecessary nail tapping. Annoying af.
(I also think this ties into toxic positivity, but that's another essay)
Another thing I think is important is paying attention to what you individually as a person (and your household) want, need, enjoy, and value.
Totally agree with everything you said 👏
I saw something recently making the claim that while neat handwriting is a sign of good organization and discipline, EXTREMELY neat handwriting actually indicates anxiety and insecurity. I am not a believer in graphology but I do wonder if a similar dynamic might be going on here. The inner world is chaotic, so the snacks drawer must be ~*~perfect~*~
“That person was me”
Lmao you’re too real for that
I don’t remember the last time I spent $175 on beverages, not even alcohol and definitely not hot chocolate
Those tik toks are so noisy! Not only is the content crap, but the loudness of all the items being opened, slammed, etc is so annoying.
I turned down the volume of all of them too
I swear I think they were slamming the items down on purpose so you comment stuff like “girl stop slamming those things are fragile!!” And stuff like that
OMG the hot chocolate powder in the organizer!!!!!!😮 Wouldn't it just be all over everything once you opened the lid for the first time? I think yes.
The clear hot chocolate box thing, I recently heard that described as "The Overconsumption Tackle Box" and I'm here for it
I don’t have TikTok and in fact, have never had it.
Influencers are commercials pretending to be your friends.
Look at me just walking with my legs on my feet with only my house keys and phone, like a complete loser. 😂
Seriously, though, there’s not much I’ll do for fun if I have to prep, make ice, buy snacks, buy seasonal items, and then put it all together.
Next time I'll leave the pepper spray and walking stick at home, the coyotes would LOVE the snack assortment!
I’d love to see someone actually take that Stanley and all its accessories on a walk... I’d probably spill everything in five steps
The only thing she's doing with that buffet is feeding pigeons.
@@JillofAllTrades-inMI Haha, that’d make a hilarious commercial for these trays 😂
The obligatory sweater claws drive me almost as insane as the "ASMR".
My new rules for myself in terms of “restocking”-
I have tracked how long it takes me to use a product over the course of this last year.
These Tiktoks are adverts, there's nothing creative about them...creativity is life affirming...not something designing to drain the bank account.
my grandma always changed her shower curtain for the seasons. my mom did too. it’s always the same stuff though.
"we recycled the wrappers."
for one, no you didn't. for two, that is not a type of plastic that can be recycled (esp in the US.)
if she put that in the recycle bin, it was sorted and sent to landfill later. or the entire batch of recyclables was thrown out because the recycling system here in the US is a JOKE.

Someone pointed this out in another video and I can’t unsee it. Are we sure all these restock ladies don’t use some kind of content creation house? They all have white counter tops and cabinets and silver stainless steel fridges.

3:34 If you're concerned about germs/messiness from a tube, why would a tub dispenser help with that? Toothpaste tablets are way better in that regard (if you are going to buy a solution to the problem) and also more sustainable

All the tap tap tapping makes me scroll right on by on these TikToks.
good rule of thumb: every time you buy something, even if you can totally afford it, think about having to box it away, put it in a moving truck, and move it to a new house.
