Another scenario I can think of is that Sephiroth only becomes a good after after he fell into the Lifestream. That the Lifestream would fix his head up, so he won't be evil, and make him see reason. Now, I still think that he would be after the black materia, but only so that no one else can have it. I also think he wouldn't be directly manipulating Cloud like he does in the game, more like setting up a trail for the group to follow. But after he gets the black materia, and is awakened, I think he would just slaughter everyone at the scene that is Shinra. After that, no idea. I never saw Advent children or any of the other games and movies relating to Final Fantasy 7. I also have no idea how the main group would react, given that they came all this way to kill him, only to realize that he doesn't want to hurt them. Oh yeah, and no dead Aerith. That's a given. This is what I think would happen. I hope you like it.
Ff7 might not be as short as you think if Jenova still has something to do with it. Remember, a good bit of those Sephiroth appearances were actually Jenova. I understand that square confirmed that Sephiroth was controlling Jenova, but Jenova might be capable on her own in this scenario
