Thank you for your good video. I used to work as a taxidermist for many many years. One suggestion I have for you to try is to get a buffing machine after you do all your sanding and buff the entire horn with red rouge polishing material. We use that in taxidermy and it turns horns and hooves into a mirror finish. Good luck.
This was wonderful to watch! I need to get brave enough to tackle this in my apartment, as I could never afford what I understand is the asking price for a large shofar ($800). Thank you for all the great info. Btw, after being raised as a Baptist and Methodist, getting saved in the Jesus People movement of the 60's, I just found out -- after years of being drawn to eating kosher, following Passover instead of Easter, etc that my mysterious grandmother (who would never tell her children/grandchildren anything about her background) was a full-on German Jew of the Ashkenazi Dispersion! So I am Jewish!!! So Jewish that had I lived in Hitler's Germany, he would have sent me to the ovens. . .oh, well, too bad for him, he never got rid of us!!!
Excellent work and teaching its has been of a blessing. I have made a couple of Shofar's but I've learned a couple of tricks n tips i would like for you to explain on how to properly heat and reshape a horn for some kudu are to curved and i would like to get started on my rams horn also
I ahve not had to heat/reshape a horn... yet. I would guess a medium flame and keep the horn moving to warm evenly, then bend with a vise or piece of pipe... Just don't lean on it too hard.
Good day, this is great insight. I have a kudu horn myself which still has the core. I would like to find out what are the ways which I can remove the core without damaging the horn?
I made and modified several shofars. I used an angle grinder similar to yours, with 60 grit to hog most of the waste. Instead of using finer abrasive grits to get a fine finsh, I used a very sharp very finely set cabinet scraper to smooth and finish out the form, cutting obliquely to avoid rippling. Then I used an offcut of horn to burnish the entire surface of the shofar. (A metal spoon works almost as well). Then I used aluminium oxide metal polish to get the glassy velvet smooth final finish. I didnt put any oil or wax. Does the olive oil go rancid after a while?
Great vids Pete! I have three shofars. I got them cheap from a guy who had a bunch of them. The one that sounds the best has some ear wounds on it. A chip here and there and the end (not the blowing end) has a chip on it. I was thinking of using clear epoxy and doing a build up and then just using a dremel tool to sand it down and then wet/dry paper for the finish. I never thought of using oil though. Does it go rancid after while and stink? I thought the guys in Israel used a polishing wheel. Would you recommend fixing the shofar or leaving it because war wounds give it character? Lol.
Standing Word Ministries epoxy would render it unkosher, if that is a concern. The oil does not go rancid as it is just a thin polish coat, occasionally reapplied. I prefer some character, but if used for religious proses, th we really is a limit when it needs to be 'retired.' just my thoughts. brachot.
I was saddened by the choice of engraving I wouldn’t put a “jesus fish” on either The minorah is cool looks great i have a set of long horns from cattle I wanna cut and drill
@@saygrey yeah, so many of our symbols come from a bad place. cant go wrong with a minorah though, straight from the mouth of Yahweh. i was debating getting a set of horns and making my own. the really big horns are cheaper in the rough state.
You can rough it out with tools pretty quickly... Maybe do that elsewhere... The longest part is the hand sanding. That can be done in the apartment, but will make a dusty mess. Keep us posted how it turns out.
Jamie Nichols , yes, you can do the whole project with sandpaper, but it will take a lot of paper and some time. You might consider a medium and fine hand rasp from Lowe's for the heavy initial cutting as that will save time and money... then, lots of 12 grit to remove rasp marks before going to finer grits. You can do it.

Sounds great. Looks amazing. Well done!
Absolutely beautiful would like to see more details of the mouthpiece if possible God bless
I wiped it off well and actual re-oil from time to time... It shouldn't have a heavy coat left on it. Wipe on, wipe off... Thanks for watching.

Beautiful work. Unfortunate that you use the star of Solomon known for its use in witchcraft. Yah's blessings upon you.

Hello, I was wondering can you do the whole project by using just sand paper? Or is necessary to use the tools shown in your videos?

Also any tips for me I'm in nyc and live in an apartment so imagine how hard it is for me thanks
And this is how it looks shofar, lol
what grade of sand paper r u sing?
How do I get one brother?
You can make one if you can find a kudu horn through a taxidermy supply house in your nation...
How far can you hear a shofar like this one??
+Viejito Many variables, but depending on ambient noise, terrain, weather, etc... A mile is very do-able.
Thank you ..im thinking to make one but where can i buy it? And which one sound better?
