This is why alcohol is just as dangerous as drugs, yet it's legal. You completely lose yourself and it can become deadly. Being cool trying to prove yourself in a Frat House at any college is never worth your life. Just say No and stay firm. RIP to young man and condolence to the family

Finding out that a loved one has passed while driving is the absolute worst. Freshman year in college my 3 best friends were involved in a car accident & only 1 survived. I found out while riding to my parents house, an hour away. That car ride was excruciating. I curled up in my dad's lap & sobbed like a baby when I finally arrived. Loosing someone is hard, but the aftermath of their death & what happens immediately thereafter leaves a lasting impact. It can truly impact the grieving process. I'm so sorry for this family's loss.

The members of these Greek houses need to be held accountable, and harsher punishment needs to be taken on not only this fraternity, but all the other ones who do the exact same things but don’t get caught. @@madmuffin4484 Nobody is blaming his parents but being a parent doesn’t just stop because they can make their own choices. A real parent continues to guide their children to make smart choices. Her son was 18 under the age of 21 to drink alcohol and she wasn’t even trying to guide her son to not drink underage. She just asked if he had to but the answer to that question would be no he doesn’t he is underage. What kind of logical question is that to ask your son. Yes even if he didn’t listen to her at least she would have actually tried to be there to guide and have control of her son. This is extremely sad though and I feel bad for the family regardless.

I go to UK and we are all required to take safe alcohol use training courses. Those that are in Greek life take extended courses as well as a hazing course online course to teach students about hazing and that it is not tolerated at the university of kentucky. Still, with a bunch of college kids and alcohol, peer pressure is real. Most frats at UK genuinely do not haze. Some still do, but without the university’s knowledge. Unfortunately, farmhouse is one of them. There are staff in the fraternity housing and working with the fraternity that are responsible for keeping the members safe and preventing hazing, and they are not doing enough. Fraternities in themselves do not condone hazing, but it’s a part of the culture and many college kids themselves don’t want to let it go because it’s part of what creates that “brotherhood”. I’m not saying it’s right, but it’s not as simple as blaming it all on the fraternity or the university.

I went to school at Kentucky for two years until 2017 when I moved out of state. You could walk down Waller Avenue in Lexington near state street and there was always a keg out in the yard. Game days had a lot of pre-game parties, and you could spot the frat boys and sorority girls from a mile away. They were always dressed up in their finest clothes (or dresses) and alcohol (usually bourbon) on hand. There were always stories of kids being hazed at campus. Sigma Alpha Epsilon in Lexington was almost banned due to their behavior, and other frats were also getting in trouble.

These kids are dying because of the “promise” of certain jobs and connections after graduation. Oh, and let’s not forget family tradition and legacy. I used to be so angry when I heard about these hazing deaths because they are so unnecessary. Now? I’m starting to see a pattern and I’m beginning to care less.
The stories are the same. Families affected seem similar. Nothing substantial gets done. Little to no criminal charges. Back to business as usual. One more foundation is created “in honor of” and there will be many more to come. Potential death is the price of admission and they’re willing to risk it.

My issue w this story is it sounds like this happened on his own free will, probably the only thing the fraternity is liable for was not checking on him when they realized he had too much to drink and leaving him alone. And I know this sounds harsh, but their son is the one who gave into the peer pressure it's not hazing when he willingly participates, and it sounds like that's what he did.

The parents are absolutely not to blame for this - fraternities are not all alcohol and parties. Many college students find friendships and connections that really help them through college as well as professional growth, networking opportunities, and a fun college experience. Fraternities at a National level are against hazing and so is the university of kentucky. Hazing is not an integral part of being in a frat, and most fraternities actively do what they can to prevent it. Unfortunately, this does not always happen and many fraternity brothers see it as a “bonding” experience, and sometimes it’s as simple as getting too carried away with alcohol use. I’m not defending fraternities in any way and what happened to Lofton was horrible and has happened to a lot of people as well. However, this is not true of every fraternity in the US. More should most definitely be done from the universities to prevent hazing, but don’t blame his parents for a second.

If they pressure you in such a way where your life and well being may be in danger...then so be it...be an outcast. It is better to be alive and live a life that is a benefit for many others in the world than to worry about the rejection of a crazy few.

I am so glad that there is no Greek life in European Universities. However, there are dudes that have gross frat boys' behaviour even here in Austria. I used to date someone, who worked at a very well known tech start-up group that developed a popular university organisation app a few years ago and after two weeks, I dumped him, bc I was sick of his and his colleague's/friends´ behaviour. They trashed a club while being drunk and found it funny because they know the owners. Another friend of his is keeping a list of women he went to bed with. It´s disgusting and embarrassing. Especially because they are between 27 and 30+. Frat-Behaviour, and it doesn´t matter where and if they are even in a fraternity, it's disgusting and absolutely dehumanizing. Hazing, in general, should be banned on campus and be threatened with serious consequences if a fraternity or sorority keeps doing it.

As UK alumni, there were debates in 2014 when the new president Eli Capilouto came on related to the decision to turn UK into a wet campus (permits legal age student drinking on campus) as opposed to a dry campus under former leadership so I would address that. The argument was said that wet campus would mitigate drinking done outside of the campus that was harder for the school to regulate. I do not know the research in other universities of the effectiveness this approach or the last approach under a dry campus status, but its worth looking into.
