    I'd love to hear the conversation between the aquarium workers when it's time to release the shark:
    "Ok it's time. Jump in there and get it and let's take it to the beach."
    "I was thinking you have more experience so maybe you should get it out of the tank."
    "No, I think you're ready for the challenge, Jim. You go for it."
    "I insist, bro...."
    "No, I insist..."

    See, I find it surprising that unlike most aquariums, this one continues to capture Great Whites and keep them (to my knowledge) in good health. Then once its health starts to deteriorate, they release it back into the wild. As a fan of sharks ever since I was a kid, I'd love to see one of these majestic animals someday
    Nice touch on the Jaws song also. That movie's soundtrack is legendary and brings back good memories of my childhood

    Incorrect. It is true that before 2002, no Great White had been successfully kept, but Monterrey changed that when they started taking in juveniles and keeping them in sea pens first. Their first GW THRIVED at the aquarium, and they hoped to keep her permanently. Unfortunately, she got too aggressive with the other animals (i.e., she ate them no matter how much they fed her), so they decided to only keep GW's until they reach a certain size.

    Great white sharks are pelagic, open ocean sharks, unlike most small aquarium sharks, which are bound to one place, so it's easier to recreate that habitat. So great whites don't do well/ aren't used to tanks and end up scraping the wall and bumping their noses. In japan, an aquarium had brought in an 11 foot great white shark, the first adult ever in captivity. However, after three days, it was dead. This proves that some sharks just aren't meant for humans to mess around with, as with all other animals on the planet. 🦈🦈🦈

    • @justinvarghese6852
      @justinvarghese6852 8 лет назад +25

      It's really hard to keep them because they have a lot of dietary preferences. Also, they tend to bump their nose against the glass a lot injuring them and stuff. If you ever see a Great White in captivity for more than a month, it's most likely a juvenile because they're easier to take care of. The few adults they capture only live for a few days because they get depressed and refuse to eat.

Every animal, can be in fact dangerous, and when you are in a presence of one, you can be in danger. What makes a shark any different? You should take caution in approaching ANY wild animal, not just sharks

    • @svx4401
      @svx4401 4 года назад

      @@joemamajoastar8708 not culture, it's based off of an actual incident that happened somewhere in the US in the early 1900s. Only difference I believe was that there were multiple sharks involved in that case, 2 if I'm not wrong. Up till that point scientists heavily debated over a great white's ability to eat humans, that incident gave conclusive evidence for verifying that they can eat us. The book n the subsequent movie were based off of that incident.

    • @svx4401
      @svx4401 4 года назад

      @Aaron Morgan no they got a young great white, it had human remains in its stomach and was declared the Mattawan maneater. It was later hypothesized however that there may have been more than a single shark involved and that's when the bull shark theory came into play because some attacks happened in the inland areas. On the other hand though, it is also said that Mattawan had high salt content in it and Great whites would have come in because of that.

    Actually if you take an animal from the wild into captivity, under proper conditions with a proper understanding of what it takes to care for them, they can live longer than they would in the wild. I study herpetology as a hobby and find it fascinating how in captivity ball pythons and burmese pythons can live 10 years longer in captivity as opposed to in the wild.
    I would imagine that the facilitators take measures to ensure that integrating the sharks back into the wild easily.

    I still don't understand why everyone is so upset about that for the same reasons! If we keep them in their habitat, they can kill someone. It we keep them in Monterrey Bay for a while, we get to look at them, we learn more about them, and maybe they'll be less aggressive when we let them go. And it's not like posting that comment is going to help anyone. I prefer sharks not biting my head off.

  • @TheRandomised
    @TheRandomised 6 лет назад +5

    *sigh* Sharks need to keep moving to keep water flowing through their gills so they can breathe. If the shark hits a wall in an aquarium, it has to quickly turn around and keep swimming. In the wild, that's not a problem, but if they're kept in an AQUARIUM TANK THEY MIGHT GET CAUGHT ON SOMETHING AND DIE! Also MBA tried this with 3 other great whites. They did fine in the facilities of the aquarium, but when they were released, they died.

    How did they recapture the shark once the study was finished, without risking harm to it or the researchers?

  • @rossothecrimson7

    I think the first great whites they had didnt do so well. Some of the juveniles did alright, in fact so well that they were attacking and eating the other sharks, that's one of the main reasons they can't keep them for long too besides the sensitivity.

    Are you for real? This is the great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, also known as the great white, white pointer, white shark, or white death. This IS NOT a blacktip shark (Carcharhinus limbatus) or a blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus). And FYI:The great white shark have exceeded 6.1 m (20 ft) in length, and 2,268 kg (5,000 lb) in weight. This is a Juvenile female of only 1.52 m (5'3").

    did i hit a soft spot there mate ?? is it so, that you in reality are dreaming of becoming a shark yourself.. ? or do you just go to the aquarium everyday and watch the sharks swim around, while you think you have some sort of special connection with it. You properly go around and tell people you brother is a shark hahaha.

    Too bad that Great White was kept till it died, hopefully they will get the protection they need so Monterey will no longer be able to exploit such a rare animal for profit. If they wanted to learn about the White shark they would put a sat tag on it and release it like others are doing. Putting it in a tank to swim around till it dies is pure exploitation.

    Did this one make it out alive? I've heard open ocean sharks like great whites are known to end up running into the tank glass like a bird on a window :(

    i remember an aquarium in my city once told us when we wen't there for school that they had an adult great white shark but it damaged the glass and killed on of the smaller types of sharks so they had to get rid of it

    @camfre4k ehm about the comment allergic to water. You know water is in almost everything you eat and drink? So being allergic to water won't let you live long. We aren't made for the sea, we don't have fins. Besides, you said sharks were killers, so i pointed out that humans are killers, and sharks are survivors.

  • @JamesPlant93

    I never said they don't have emotions or feeling did I, you're just coming back at me with a generic argument assuming that's the way I think.
    Why would you watch a video of a shark in an AQUARIUM if you don't like it being in captivity.
    Reasonable thing to do would be to not fucking watch it.
    And I'm sure they travel the same distance in a big tank, just generally through the same area, so the distance they cover in their lives is irrelevant.
    If an animal is well looked after where's the issue?
