I blame Spielberg. Sharks are actually not dangerous to humans unless you imitate a fish or a seal, for example by paddling on a surfboard or flailing on the surface in panic. There was a French guy who proved this by working on his heart rate while swimming with sharks. When his heart rate went up then the sharks would get nervous and excited, they even bit him a little to examine whether he was a fish they could eat. And when he relaxed, so did they and he was able to pet them like dogs. He eventually did this in South Africa with great whites. Not sure if it's still there, but the doc was on YT years ago. Crazy man free swimming with great whites! You're not cathing me trying to do this, but he did prove that sharks are no threat to us if we behave properly around them.

The Irish for basking shark is liamhán gréine which literally translates to sun shark. They are also known as a Cearbhán also. They breach alot here. Ireland is a great place to see these amazing sharks. Best places are counties Mayo, Donegal and Cork

Collisions and being caught up in nets accidentally is also an issue (although much less so).
