There's a slow moving fish (also penguins), let's bully it to death!" and "I'm gonna teach my offsprings on how to teach to hunt and catch a smart, mobile, and agile prey. It's cruel, I know, but at least I let some of them go when we are satisfied with our meal."

In German they're called 'Mondfisch' which literally translates into 'moonfish'. It confused me a lot when I found out it's called a sunfish in English :D
In German a lot of things are the other way around, no? Like in Dutch we call a lake "een meer" and the sea "de zee" but in German you call lake "der See" and sea "das Meer". Very confusing tbh
Same thing happens in Spanish, it's called "Pez Luna", which also means "moon fish".
And upon further inspection, it's name also means "moon fish" in Dutch, Portuguese, French, Catalan, Italian, Russian, and Greek.
So this time English is apparently the one that got it backwards compared to most European languages.
English always gotta be different smh...

God, I love this fish.... so ridiculous, so thin yet so huge, why god oh why is it so... vertical... the hilarity of it.... i just can't.... and now i just knew that it has little pain receptors... and it's so... slow. The seal is just taking a bite and playing around and my man here just like "Yup, fml, this happens, oh there goes a chunk of my flesh. Ok now I'm drowning..." and my dude is gonna be flipping his thin flat vertical fins to swim and his shortass stubby flat brush tail so desperately but it aint moving and be like "This is fine." I'm CACKLING, I love sunfish more now

The fact that it’s German name translates into Moonfish and it’s English name being sunfish really makes me uncomfortable.

The fact that someone thinks some bit of it's body is a delicacy makes me feel tired.

People call them stupid, but the fact that they know to go lay at the surface of the ocean to let sea birds eat the parasites off of them shows a remarkable amount of intelligence. I have a huge soft spot for these guys, I’m not sure why but hey ❤️

I remember the old Mola Mola in the Lisbon aquarium, it was huge!!! (I was also a small 5 year old kid) In Portugal they are called Peixe Lua, that also translate to moon fish (the same happens in German)

Flounders are round-ish, they have A TAIL, and have both eyes at the side (or the front, however you want to call it), both of these features the Mola Mola lacks.

They're in FFXIV too, as multiple varieties of sunfish. Though they're currently most widely recognised by ocean fishers as Momora Moras. They often replace the more rare, valuable catches, pretty much the same as how they appear in Animal Crossing. Many a fisher has sighed and many more have made puns upon catching one.
It seems crazy to imagine an animal that grows from the size of a pinhead to the size of a car in a lifetime, but then you remember there's an animal the size of a pin, who's skeleton you can see from space

@@TheScorpion0081 t's called "φεγγρόψαρο" in Greek which translates to moonfish too. One version of why it took thsi name is because fishermen say that they come to water surface when there is a fullmoon and dance with the moonlight on the surface.
In Sweden we call them klumpfisk. Klump = blob, fisk = fish :)

Got to see one sunning about two miles offshore of Jacksonville Beach in the early 2000's. It was huge!
We were out trolling for tuna and came upon one of these sunning on its side. I've never seen people move so fast to get the lines out of the water. Did NOT want to accidentally hook one of these. It was the size of a Volkswagen.

When I was stationed in Monterey, CA, i had gone down to the rocks along the shore. I spotted a small mola mola inside the breaker line and unable to get back out to sea. I waded out and got hold of it. it was, as the video shows, completely unresistant and just small enough for me to get an awkward grip on it. I tried tossing it out beyond the breakers but didn't quite make it. I finally had to swim out with it and turn it loose. With as many sea lions as there were in the area, I was pretty sure he wouldn't last long, but at least I tried. Mola molas had fascinated me since visits to the Marineland aquarium when I was a kid, and it was a thrill to get close to one, even though he was only about 5 or six feet from fin tip to fin tip.
I had always wanted to see one in real life, and once I had at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, it was truly magical. They are so graceful and have such an incredible way of transportation.
Sunfish and moonfish are majestic creatures. I’ve seen them around 400kg and are amazing to watch.

The only thing I know about those animals is that their German name means "moon fish", because of their habit to float horizontally on the surface, which look like the reflection of the moon due to their size. Great videos you have there! They're short and very informative. And the drawn artworks are great. I can't take my eyes off this time-laps!!

Hello, my name is Patricia and I am on my husband's site to write to you. I love Mola Mola. I never knew about this fish until I saw one at the Monterey Aquarium. Thank you so very much for your informative video. I do have two Mola Mola's on my bed... they are plush toys I got from the Monterey Aquarium. Again thank you for shedding light on this fabulous fish.

They're EXTREMELY rare. I've seen most semi-exotic fish (excluding deep sea fish) but has yet to "sea" a Mola Mola and I dive and snorkel many times a month
Simon i go a few times during the summer, I'm still hopeful. It's in my bucket list also the giant manta Ray's and whale sharks.
I have bumped into them quite a few times in Cape Cod. They hang out a few miles off Chatham in the summer. At least the times I have seen them
