God damn I miss their shows! When to a Beastie Boys show with this girl back in '95, we've been married for 25 years now.

Awesome! The Beastie Boys encouraged Mix Master Mike to switch up their beats live. They never knew what he was going to do which made their live shows even more amazing!

Yeah. Improvised. They had MM Mike switch up beats and they'd just roll with it. They're insanely talented, and truly masters of their craft.Their live shows were absolutely fantastic.

Mike Ds line about “when I’m in holland I eat the pannekoeken” is off of Super Disco Breakin, the first track from their album Hello Nasty (1998)

They never knew what Mixmaster Mike was going to drop, so it kept the vibe loose and the way they changed their cadence and pace to match it is incredible and fun. Check out the Glasgow 99 performance for a wild crowd and an even tighter performance!

It was but they have been on stage together for a long time. This is a one off concert/promo gig. Also they tell Mike to drop in any beat he wants and they go with it. They said it keeps the shows fresh. So the live stuff always has random beats.

I've seen them live 8 or 9 times, and all their shows were fire. I assume you're from Detroit with the Tigers hat you wear. Me too, but moved away 20 years ago. Love to support folks from the 313! Best show I ever saw was New Year's Eve '92 at the State Fair Coliseum. Best way ever to ring in the New Year!

You should react to the full Glasgow concert that’s on RUclips. It’s a great encapsulation of everything they did. They go hard, hype highly energy rapping, Mix Master Mike scratching and switching up beats and they have segments where they turn into a band and play punk songs.

I played the same arena the next day. I was on tour at the same time and everywhete we went, we ran into the Beasties crew. Every hotel I walked into in Europe, they were walking out. We walked into the Glasgow arena (it’s actually not an arena, it’s an exhibition and convention center) as their crew wete walking out. Eventually I was in Sydney Australia the same time they were playing and I had a night off and got to go to their show. And that’s where I saw The Avalanches for the first time. And holy heck, what a discovery that was. If you haven’t, go get their first album and their first dj album.

You do know they took Public Enemy on tour to open for them right? They're deep in this thing. I told you before Ad Rock brought a young 15 year olds demo tape to Rick Rubin's attention, who was LL Cool J. They're foundational on taking this thing across the world.

their hardcore punk beginning is the main reason why their live shows were always so over the top. playing live punk shows with next level hardcore heavies like bad brains and minor threat taught them how to bring the intense energy (what bad brains call the PMA, positive mental attitude) full blast, every time. i see a lot of live hip-hop shows, and to this day, many of those shows are weak because there is this lazy wandering around baked on stage quality. beasties were punks on a hip-hop mission to blow your mind every show, they did not fuck around, though it was loose and goofy and fun/funny.

I don't know why I get so much from watching young people enjoy this music I grew up on. But if you assume people like hip hop, maybe the Beastie Boys are needed more than ever. Look what's missing with rappers now. Everyone's solo. No more crews. No teamwork or the kind of pleasing back and forth these dudes have. The DJ is getting shine. Ain't no DJs now, just space fillers. They employ humor, are self-effacing, and don't take themselves too seriously. they can perform live and it sounds good. A ton of rappers can't do a good show. The Beasties give you a fuller total hip hop experience as it was designed by the purists.
