One thing I’m convinced of is the ripper had masterful knowledge of the Whitechapel area. I don’t think it was an American who had only had brief experience of it. He’s worth looking into though.
No one would’ve had a more thorough knowledge of the Whitechapel area as well as being able to move about completely unsuspected than a homicidal prostitute. Fights over customers and preferred areas were common among the prostitutes in that time.
Examine his movements. But also look at someone who knew the area like the back of his hand. Had a place nearby, where he could vanish for some sleep after wandering around at 4am, to be in bed by 5am.
I’ve been living in London for six years and it’s not an easy city to navigate. Some person on holiday wasn’t going to know the area like someone who grew up there. Jack was a local.
When presented with the background information, I can’t see how someone can think that anyone other than Francis Tumblety was guilty of committing the Whitechapel murders. The cheap brass rings are such a chilling detail. This was the most concise take on Francis Tumblety and his potential guilt that I have ever had the privilege of watching. Thanks for this, brother!
This video was the best documentary on Dr. Tumblety that I have seen. I am glad that you pointed out that Tumblety died here my hometown of Saint Louis. Here is another historical tid-bit about Tumblety. The funeral home where he was embalmed and prepared for burial was located on Saint Louis' Grand Avenue; across the street from old Sportsman's Park. This was our ballpark; prior to Busch Stadium.
Because he was. Over 46 sworn testimonies and depositions of Tumblety in the last 20 years of his life were in agreement that he spent his evenings in the slums of every city he went to dressed down life a homeless person walking in the darkest parts of the street. At no time did ANY eyewitnesses say he walked the evenings showing off a gigantic mustache. All stated that he waxed it pitch black and it was not gigantic.
This is a quality presentation. I've always seen Tumblety as one of three main suspects. Why on earth are we not able to access the Scotland Yard arrest brief? Well done.
It’s always a pleasure to take part of your immense knowledge about the case Mr. Jones, but this was extraordinarily interesting. It was also wonderful to hear Mr. Harley’s expertise regarding this particular suspect. I learned quite a few new things tonight. I often read claims that The Ripper was a sadistic killer, but was he though? The Ripper, to my knowledge, never tortured his victims, but rather killed them quite swiftly and only desecrated the bodies post mortem. Sadism is defined as the infliction of suffering for sexual gratification. A sadist will inflict pain on someone in order to see a terrified victim’s reaction. Tormenting a victim is a way for sadists to bolster their egos and self worth. Having complete control over a helpless person makes them God-like in their own twisted worlds. But did the Ripper really do any of that? He seemed to have done his deeds very quickly, mainly in the dark, and at least with no apparent sexual gratification. The only exception possibly being the Mary Kelly murder, of which we know far to little about to say anything for certain. George Bagster Phillips believed that Kelly had been killed by a slash to the throat and the mutilations were performed afterward. Is that the actions by a sadistic killer? He had her indoors, by himself, and Phillips suggested that the extensive mutilations would have taken two hours to perform. Yet he didn’t keep her alive, though he could have. From my point of view all this suggests that he had an ulterior motive rather than sadism.
He couldve achieved sexual satisfaction just by the mutilations. Well, im saying i believe that possible. This person probably didnt need actual intercourse to feel sexual gratification. The sadism part is so interesting. With Mary Kelly, it looks incredibly primitive. Like a lion kills its prey. It almost seems as though the killer has these animal instincts mixed with the complexities of human desire to kill. It really is very strange.
This was a good tutorial for those of us who aren't ripperologists or sleuths. It brought into perspective all the vague descriptions of Tumblety which have been mentioned in less specific ripper discussions. Maybe he and Lechmere shared grisly duties.
@@JackTheRipperTours hello. I have a book you might be interested in. A book from 1941. Called INQUEST. By S. Ingleby Oddie. He was a coroner. He talks about the ripper case too and a. Conan Doyle If you want I send it to you. Greetings. Robin Stevens The Netherlands
I agree Lechmere known as Cross sounds a good suspect ..maybe he left his signature on 2 of the bodies with Cross's carved into them .. we'll probably never know.
This is the best documentary on Tumblety I have heard. Will be listening to more. So much information that I haven't heard and loved the whole tone of it. I used to think it was Tumblety but as more questions came up I changed my mind. I think it would be a local man and if any I suspect lechmere.
Thanks for this- I really enjoy Michael Hawley's book The Ripper's Haunts. My own suspect is Lechmere, but Tumblety is a fascinating character outside of the JtR stuff. He's one of the most colorful and eccentric haracters of the 19th century. I'd love to see a movie or Netflix show made about his life.
I'm also more suspect of Lechmere. Tumblety stands out too much. His height, accent and mustache would have been picked up by witnesses. Add the constant police attention and lack of oppurtunity and he seems even less likely.
There is so much rubbish on RUclips it is wonderful to come across a detailed, balanced and well researched item such as this. Submitted as a thesis this would get you a first.
What a character! This is the most compehensive set of information on the subject I've seen. Presented with Sir Richard Jones' outstanding quality, it might turn into the script for a really good film.
Tumblety has always been my favorite contender for Jack the Ripper - if only because of his rabid hatred of women! I heard he kept a large cupboard in the US, full of medical jars containing woman's wombs and sexual organs saying "This is where women belong"! Horrid character!
Tumblety was an extremely tall and excentric man, with a very remarkable appearence. He would have most certainly been the center of attention. I think most of what is said about him seems quite is disputed. My theory is that the killer might have not been a mentally sick lunatic or even someone with hatred of women or prostitutes. What if it was a psycopath with an extreme curiosity for the female anatomy that took advantage of underpriviledged and marginalized women, that went undiscovered because he might have been a butcher and wouldn't really be suspicious with his clothes.
I doubt he was the ripper. JTR was described by witnesses as being between 5'5 5'7 in height and 30-36 years of age. Tumblety was 5'10 and was 55 by the time JTR started his killings.
Very interesting indeed, I learned new details about Dr. Tumblety watching this video. One thing was not mentioned is the fact that THE FROM HELL LETTER (probably the only ripper letter thought to be written by the killer) showed signs of being written by an Irish person, Dr. Tumblety was originally Irish... but I still think Kosminski is the ripper. Dr. Tumblety was in his 40's when the murders occurred and the physical description does not match. The Ripper was described as a man in his late 20's, not 6 feet tall and no american accent, let alone the big mustache. Kosminski fits the profile not just cause of his mental disease (was guided by voices) attacked his sister with a knife, was named by 2 of the top police Chiefs at the time as the killer, Martin Fido came up with "Aaron". Also, Aaron Kosminski was "trained as a barber" according to his hospital admission records, barbers at the time were surgeons, remove teeth and did minor surgery; knew basic anatomy. Great video Mr Jones. May I recommend you prepare a video on GEORGE HUTCHINSON? he is very suspicious to me, was probably the lookout in the ripper murders. Thanks.
Tumblety was a Headliner, JTR is a headliner. Tumblety said, he did it for science, a great medical reform. He called them animals. "She brings on a crisis by stools, vomiting, sweat, urine, expectoration, ect. which for the most part ends in the restoration of healthy action. ...Here, then, the judicious, the moral, the humane physician should stop. But the ADVENTUROUS physician goes on and substitutes presumtion for knowledge.....Almost the last words that Senator Plumb uttered were to his landlady, who asked him what was the result of his consultation with his physician. He replied characteristically, "I have got to throw up the sponge." He meant that he had to stop work and he did not know that so soon he would have to stop altogether. ..It has been said that the man without the capacity of wonder resembles a dull pair of specticles behind which there are no eyes...These unjust and infamous, amazing in there frequency and absolute lack of foundation, have almost deprived me of the wonder capacity." Francis Tumblety. Further note, why did his file disappear?
Tumbelty fits the profile perfectly. The Polish guy also , i would say these 2 are the primary suspects. The murders stopped as soon as Tumbelty left for France and Kosminski being admitted to a mental institute
Of course that could be the case. The police, the people and not to mention the newspapers were all seeking for a monster that would stand out in a crowd. What we know today is that serial killers usually don’t. Especially successful serial killers. They are more likely to be quite ordinary people and more often unconspicuous than the obvious psychopathic monsters people want them to be. One thing that really speaks for that the Ripper was a local, quite anonymous, resident rather than the Hollywood caricature with the top hat, cape and a doctor’s bag, is the Whitechapel murderers evident local knowledge. He knew the streets, the alleys, the backyards, the passage ways and the shortcuts. He knew every nook and cranny of Whitechapel. There’s very little doubt in my mind he was born and raised there. And he may very well have been someone who never appeared in any of the police reports and never was mentioned at any of the inquests.
@@patavinity1262 don't know about extremely high as I mean the police likely had some indications to go by like they went threw alot of people calling door by door etc lol
And never have any real idea who the killer was, who not only was a cunning criminal but a very mysterious character. Tumblety didn't like being around women and was far too old as well as tall not to mention being very wealthy to have possibly been JTR.
Mr.Jones once again you hit it out of the park , I can not get enough of this . Francis Tumblety was my first suspect when I started looking into the Ripper. My interest was sparked due to the fact he was an American. Then everyone knows that a lot of movies called the lodger . I think Alfred Hitchcock's first movie was along those lines. But in my opinion when you look into it he's the first one you can discount . I believe the only one that really did see the Ripper was Evelin Long. She said he was dark , a foreigner , she also said he was a little taller than Chapman . She was 5"2 . I don't believe you can fit Francis Tumblety into that box. One thing you never heard about Tumblety is that he was short. I look for info about Cutbush but I can only find little about him. He really has my interest now.
I know a lot of Ripperologists totally dismiss the Lechmere/Cross theory, but one thing i have never seen is a video by guys like you explaining - just why you are so sure it could not have been him. It would still make for a fascinating episode and to explain why he called himself Cross while signing official documents in the name Lechmere. His wife and kids were Lechmere exclusively, and i completely don't buy it that he was only trying to protect them. Minutes ahead of Robert Paul and more than enough time to do the deed. Tarpaulin my arse - no offense, i just would love this mystery solved, rather than dragged on indefinitely. I am in no way biased towards any particular suspect and i have nothing to gain other than getting to the bottom of it all. At least give your viewers some facts about him and tell me why ripper enthusiasts hit the roof when he is mentioned.
@@JackTheRipperTours I know that, but he seems to be a suspect that never gets a mention. An episode where you guys give your valuable information even to totally dismiss him being a suspect would still be interesting. When you can look at something with absolutely no bias, you can really see things more clearly and one day something might crop up that takes him out of my firing line and then i will move on! Like your videos and they are always well produced and fascinating.
He is very much on my list of suspects to do. I am hoping to feature one of those who propose him as a suspect as I like the videos to present a for and against case.
Tumblety sounded like a real character didn't he. How many people must have fell for his false claims of being able to heal them and becoming ill over it and like poor Mr Hanratty dying. The police must have had some concern over him if they were watching him and also for arresting him several times. Such a shame that there is not much information now. The dossier if it were to be found would make for a very interesting read wouldn't it. He obviously didn't care for women but is that enough to think he could have been Jack The Ripper. But why did he skip bail and flee the country. A strange character indeed. Definetely a narcisist. Brilliant story again Richard. Thank you for all the effort you put into these stories. Look forward to your next one. Best wishes.
I have now fully watched the video. I would like to praise you for your contributions and the amount of effort to gather such an incredible amount of information about the life of Francis Tumblety. He is an incredibly interesting personality for how excentric and peculiar he was. But I can´t help but think that, just like most of the famous suspects, he was just the target of social steryotipes from back then, and his name as a suspect is overwhelmingly attached to the social and collective view over who the criminal might have been, which would vary from jewish, immigrant, royal family members and others, most of which mostly based on people´s own personal discomforts back then. The killer was most likely an unobtrusive, unremarkable working class man, who was a butcher or at least had some peculiar interest in the act of dissecting bodies. My unpopular opinion is that he might not have been a mysoginist or a woman hater. He was rather someone who had an incredible attachment for the female anatomy for some reason and would have prostitutes as his target for being vulnerable and a marginalized social group, so he wouldn´t have been caught. A local who knew the area extremely well and was either on his way to work or going back from work, therefore he had reasons to be on those areas without being suspicious. He was probably not considered a suspect back then, and the contractions about whether he had great anatomical knowledge or not was probably because he was enhancing his ´´techniques´´, which he would learn from each murder. Though an average man, probably relatively smart by how much he would learn from each murder, which might have been the most reseonable explanation for the variety and discrepancy on statements on regard to his skills. Because he was a psychopath, he wouldn´t really mind doing that over and over again. The carman Charles Lechmere is someone that is extremely suspicious to me, which I consider to be the prime suspect. I have other theories based on different interpretations of the killer by reading through the killings and making assumptions, and also giving credit to Anderson and Swanson´s claims, but the most coeherent for me is the one I mention above. Anyway, I absolutely respect your research and, even though I disagree with the view over Tumblety, I did enjoy the whole way through the video, which was remarkably well elaborated. Love your channel.
Have you read Chister Holmgren’s “Cutting Point”? It is well worth the read and it gives possible “inspirations” for Lechmere in his youth. Excellent book.
Another amazing video; they keep getting better and better. Tumblety is a good example of the danger of taking a collection of (sometimes unverified) facts and fashioning a argument around it. On the surface of the story of Tumblety it sounds like a sure bet. However, a lot of it seems to be of the 'weird type... so suspect' route. He was an hermaphrodite homosexual misogynist tall/short flamboyant/eccentric/everyday syphilitic who just so happened to collect uteri... hmm....
Great info thank you. Although I knew this guys name from watching documentaries, I never knew that he was publicized as a suspect publicly in the US and I also never knew he even did an interview saying I’m not JTR.
@@JackTheRipperTours great video, I always favoured Tumbelty as a suspect up until I did research on an unrelated topic. I have since been of the opinion these brutal murders MAY have been perpetrated by a gang known as the monkey parade gang, who were known to be brutal and pretty much ran the streets of Whitechapel at night. They had control over some prostitution and I think these horrific killings were warnings. In fact more than a few of (the ladies of the night) claimed to know who the killer was but stayed silent out of fear, in fact Eddowes came back from a hop picking holiday to say she was going to “claim the reward money for Jack the Ripper” maybe this got back to the gang? And there is also some evidence the gang had connections with the local tenant housing some of these ladies would stay in. I have a lot more that points on the possibility it could have been some of the members of this gang (something many bobbies on the beat thought at the time to). But I don’t want to just real off a massively huge comment. But I would be interested in somebody like yourself doing research on this possibility as you are very good at research and unlike many people in this field seem to keep an open mind.
Thanks to Rich and Mr. Hawley. Very interesting video! I wonder, could Tumblety have been The Batty St lodger? Also, his handwriting bears a resemblance to that of the author of the “From Hell” letter. I’m not suggesting he wrote it, just that it’s an interesting coincidence.
Hi Dave. We did look at him being the Batty Street Lodger, and personally I think there is a chance he was. In the end I didn't but the Batty Street lodger in this one as I am hoping to do it as a stand alone video.
The handwriting is certainly similar. It's unfortunate that some people think handwriting can also be used to determine character traits and this IMO has devalued it's use as a scientific tool. Just for the record I think he wrote it.
With all duo respect, Tumblety is amongst the most outlandish and unreseonable suspects out there. Tumblety, Maybrick, William Gull, Sickert .... I think the very best suspects are really lowkey average working class dudes with some somber past that is really not superficial enough for eyes to catch. Charles Allen Lechmere is the best imo. William Grant Grainger could be. Robert Mann. Regardless, I genuinely enjoy the channel. Great content every time. Gotta confess I have to watch this one. But even If my read is wrong and the killer happens to be an insane dude, perhaps Jacob Levy David Cohen/Nathan Kaminski and even James Kelly
@@JackTheRipperTours I wanna watch it carefully to judge on the video as well. Sorry If I was rude. It's mostly about the suspect himself. Your content is incredibly good.
Absolutely agree that none of these outlandish suspects are really viable, although these videos are still brilliant and well researched gold mines of info.
Fantastic video, the amount of research you do is mind blowing ,I learn alot today watching the video,,i guess the great thing about ,Jack the ripper ,,is we will never know who he was,,,,,
That's because we don't talk day to day it's much more easier and common going back and forward today but there would've been daily boats going too and from there and remember this man was loaded with cash lol
It was the age of ocean liners and the wealthy as well as the lower classes traveled that way. As a matter of fact it was really the only way for families from the “Old Country” to visit relatives in the United States.
Tumblety has been my prime suspect for the Ripper murders for many years. The evidence is compelling. However, he is a fascinating figure in his own right apart from his possible connection to the murders, as demonstrated in this excellent documentary.
Thank you very much for your thorough investigation into Dr Tumblety. I enjoyed watching it very much :) My thoughts on whether he was Jack the Ripper or not. I have come to the conclusion that he was not Jack the Ripper. Although he demonstrated certain attributes that certainly made him a definite person of interest/or suspect for the police. There was one, very important, key ingredient that he did not possess. Dr Tumblety was not a trained surgeon, he did not have the precise surgical skills required to be Jack the Ripper. It was stated, based on the autopsies performed on the victims. That whoever Jack the Ripper was, he would have to possess the skills of someone who had a trained eye for anatomy, and advanced surgical skills. Dr Tumblety was nothing more than a con-artist, Quack doctor who was out to make money. None of the Whitechapel murders would have resulted in him making money. Besides, he had travelled back and forth previously to London and nearby areas with no such murders like these occurring. I don't see why he would suddenly just start in 1888 and then just suddenly stop. It makes no sense. A person who kills like Jack the Ripper did, wouldn't just stop. They keep killing until they are caught or die. And based on forensic analysis of serial killers. Homosexual serial killers normally kill men, not women. However there is one very important suspect that the police unfortunately missed. A Dr H.H Holmes, America's first serial killer. He was caught and confessed to killing at least 27 people. He was hanged for murdering a young boy, who was left in his care. He poisoned him and also strangled his 2 sisters to death. H.H Holmes was a trained surgeon, he possessed the unique skills required to perform the Whitechapel murders, and also had a psychopathic skill of making his victims feel safe and comfortable with him, before ending their lives. Also, handwriting from H.H Holmes was determined as a match when compared to the handwriting of Jack the Ripper. H.H Holmes was also staying in London on business, during the time of the Whitechapel murders. The murders started when he arrived and stopped when he returned to America. H.H Holmes spent his entire life, sadly taking the lives of many innocent people. And he also had a hatred towards women, his wife had to leave him and flee after suffering severe abuse/domestic violence, by his hand. If anyone is interested in learning more. There are several documentaries on You-Tube about H.H Holmes's life and crimes. There are also other documentaries available where others suspect him of being Jack the Ripper. Again, thank you for your interesting video, about Dr Tumblety.
It was stated that the ‘doctor’ always traveled with an assistant. Who was the assistant, or assistants, who accompanied him to London during the Whitechapel events? If the good doctor was in gaol during one of the murders, it seems to be a strategy to exonerate him of any involvement. Too many circumstantial ‘coincidences’ for my liking. For various stated reasons I’d put my money on the ‘good doctor’ here. Thanks for listening.
If you did read somewhere that Tumblety always traveled with an assistant, then don't read it any further. This is a mistake. I have sworn testimony of one of his young men who stated that Tumblety NEVER walked with a person at night. Also, he was not in Gaol prison, ever. He was in Holloway prison between November 14 and November 16, but that is it.
I think the moustache still is a problem. It is indeed a very obvious feature. And his accent. People would remember him more easily. It is indeed mentioned at the end of your documentary. But a bit short. More info on that issue would be nice.
I have one case where two men attempted to follow Tumblety in the streets and he vanished. I have two account, both sworn testimony, that the acquaintances stated each night Tumblety would only walk in the darkest areas of the streets. I have other accounts where Tumblety walked around at night with his collar up and his derby hat pushed down. The New York World journalist who interview Tumblety on January 30, 1889, stated that Tumblety had a British accent.
I would not trust a witness description from 1888 from far away in the middle of the night on a dark alley too much. Tumbelty fits the profile. He shoud've never been released. They shoud've kept him until he confessed. You might be an American defending your fellow American but you're wrong
Tumblety not only publicised himself as a Doctor, but also a Chemist. It was the latter that concerned Scotland Yard and, likely, earlier interest by the IRB. The Yard’s ‘Anti-Subversion Unit” kept a close watch on Tumblety, when in England, to ensure he wasn’t making explosives. “Ripper Country”, the East End of London was the haunt of many radical groups, socialist, communist, anarchist, republican, workers clubs.
There is no evidence that Tumblety was a chemist. Honestly. If you read that somewhere, I can guarantee they do not support it with evidence. Also, there is no evidence that he ever cared for a cause, with the exception of him. He was a narcissist.
Out of all the suspects, for me this guy ticks the most boxes. He arrives in London starts killing, gets aressted flees back to America and the killings end. He was bonkers, hated women, had the surgical skill and kept female organs in jars. Witnesses said the killer was well dressed and medium to tall.
The Ripper strangled all of his victims before he started ripping them, so that would seem to imply he was NOT sadistic. All the mutilation was done after they were dead. He did not torture them. Nor is there any evidence of sexual gratification.
My research into prostitution in that era showed that they would lift up their skirt & bend over forward- especially since these were back alley deals-thus making it easy to slit their throats….
@@Stantheman848 Brexit voter? WTF? I think she knows more than most dude. You represent those who absolutely fall arse over tit to discredit the Lechmere theory for maybe another reason other than just disagreeing perhaps? Come on...spill!
@@Stantheman848 I mean even the reason for saying it was only that documentary it still does highlight that he 100% is the prime suspect for that murder and the police never even questioned him.
Among many things that speak against Tumblety being the Ripper is that his hatred of women was aversional, i.e. in his dislike of them he tried to avoid them. Which is in stark contrast to the Ripper who actively sought them to harm them. Tumblety was 193 cm tall and none of the people that witnesses saw with any of the victims prior to their murders was described as above 180 cm.
He's not the killer....but he was Aiding the killer ...probably hired dude to do his dirty work to collect fresh body parts for his weird obsession.... also think he was look out and that why killer was never caught....
It would be fantastic if the most notorious serial killer known to us was named "Tumblety". Tumblety, Tumblety, Tumblety....sounds like a modifier in a Winnie The Pooh story.
Anyone know if there are any records of where he went after leaving London and if so, whether any similar murders occurred anywhere he went? I always wondered about the murders just suddenly stopping. Serial killers don’t just stop unless they’re stopped so either the ripper died, got locked up for something else significant enough to result in significant jail time (unlikely, we’d probably be aware of it) or....he left the area...one of the biggest factors in favour of tumblety being Jack the Ripper.
Mr. Hawley, this video mentions a 'new' person on the scene described as very red hair & mustache, short in height, an attention getter and looking for Francis Tumblety. Excuse me if I missed something but happened with that? Was he possibly Aaron Kosminski? They were both Barbers and the video mentions that Tumblety may have recruited someone to kill the women in Whitechapel for him. PS Barbers use leather aprons. But so do Cobblers, Bar Tenders, Black Smiths, Wood Workers, etc..
Hi Debbie. There actually is evidence that if Tumblety was involved he may have exploited someone. Knowing Dr. T, he only exploited young men (and then would molest them) and there were numerous cases. There are, however, no cases he partnered with someone like Kosminski.
IF Tumblety was involved I don't Believe he committed the murders himself - the younger Man said to travel with Francis could have been perfect for job .
Pros: I really don't know if Jack the Ripper was necessarily a Misogynist, but he definitely had a hatred of Prostitutes. So the "fallen women" claim definitely holds up. It's also pretty suspicious he had those 2 rings at the time of his death. Cons: Most serial killers hold something in common with their victims. Tumblety would've been about 58 years old at the time of Jack the Rippers crimes. Far too old to have killed women between the ages of 25 - 43. This video doesn't mention the results of the handwriting comparison. Nor does it mention anything about Ant-Semitism. (graffiti) Also, there are several Suspects that left England shortly before the Ripper's crimes had stopped. Also, Tumblety showing everyone his collection of Women's Uterus's....and nobody batted an eye? That guy was full of shit.
Interesting enough for me to listen twice! I've had a browse about the internet though, and can't find anything about Francis Tumblety being 'a hermaphrodite'. And if he did have syphilis, he could hardly blame female prostitutes - possessing an incredibly tiny male member. The point about him not being unusually tall, because of his hat, was odd too. At a time when just about everyone wore hats, surely the police and witnesses would be able to judge heights? Also, his age in 1888 would have been 55, and that counts him out too. I liked Mr Hawley's enthusiasm though, and it's great to hear about a man who lived a very unusual life.
LOL I'm glad I'm not the only one that watches these over and over. He's second to none as a storyteller and researcher. at times he sounds like he was there.
In each major city, when there was a problem with syphilis amongst the female prostitutes, syphilis also spread throughout the young male prostitutes. Every young man who Tumblety maintained a sexual relationship later got married and had kids. Point - most the young male prostitutes had sex with both males and females. Tumblety clearly contracted syphilis from a male prostitute, but remember, women were the root cause of all disease. He not only blamed female prostitutes for the syphilis outbreak, he blamed female prostitutes for "decoying" young males into a life of heterosexuality. ...based up Tumblety's own words.
People with micro penis father children, therefore it follows they can get STDs. Indeed the gross indecency charges against him all point to the various sodomy laws of the time. That is normally suggestive of acts against receptive partners.
Kept jars of organs, traveled to London frequently, had medical knowledge/training and plenty of wealth, eccentric and possible sociopathic if not psycopathic, charming and without a doubt had considerable intelligence to move through those difficult times with ease.
Interesting, and quite a lot of research involved, more than Tumblety deserved. Too much time gone and not enough facts to ever figure out who performed these horrible murders. I think if Scotland Yard had these files, they would have just said they did, but they should conclusively say yeah or nay for the record.
The DNA evidence is from a shawl that may not have even been owned by the supposed victim. Also, the type of DNA test done is one that can only exclude a particular suspect, it can't identify one.
Have you seen the picture of the walking stick they have just found, given to abberline, carved with jtr face ? Just looking through photos, (lechmere) and saw a photo that would fit, one Charles reeves. Lived in the area, on the vigilante committee, out at night ? Worth a quick check ! Pat.
Considering the mind of the act towards those women has always baffled the case, it certainly could fit Tumblety with lower half of his body of female form, that for sure screw him up, and being gay in those times, the more stuff is known about him, his mind fits the crimes. Really good episode.
Yes,,he claimed to have been a Dr during the Civil War. The book Suspect (shown in the clip is quite gd & in depth). Also, if true, a collection of pickled wombs isn't really what most keep around the house.
There were 4 murders earlier before T arrived in London. dates 25/2/88. 28/3/88. 3/4/88. 6/8/88. Possibly could eliminate FT as he arrived May 2088. However, FT was in London during the 5 incidents.
That handlebar mustache of Tumblety’s would have stuck out like a sore thumb on the streets of Whitechapel, and as I recall none of the JTR witnesses described a man with a massive mustache and an American accent.
@@richardbaranowski A good point, although there is also the fact that Tumblety was in his fifties at the time of the JTR killings, The Ripper was described as a man in his twenties to his thirties by witnesses, also Tumblety was a man over six feet tall, JTR was described as being a man of average height.
The NY World reporter who interviewed Tumblety in January 1889 stated he had a British accent. I don't recall any witnesses who saw the murderer. No one did. MacNaghten even stated that NO ONE saw the murderer.
@@cha5 , again, no one saw the murders. Also, it is a misconception that Tumblety was over 6 feet tall. If you want to know how tall he was, look at this own autobiography. His height was nearly identical to Macnaghten's Michael Ostrog.
@@michaelhawley2283 Joseph Lawende, who saw a man with Cathrine Eddowes in Mitre Square 15 minutes before her death very likely saw JTR, George Hutchenson also saw a man with Mary Kelly on the night of her death who might or might not have been the Ripper, Israel Schwartz most certainly saw the man who killed Elizabeth Stride, Among some other possible witnesses, What MacNaghten stated is irrelevant there and I don’t view his opinion on everything JTR related as gospel. Witness descriptions describe a man of average height with a small mustache, Nothing on the scale of a massive handlebar one ala Tumblety, and there is the matter of his age, Just about all the witness descriptions of JTR describe a man who was in his twenties or thirties, younger than Tumblety at that time who would have been in his late fifties. If you don't recall any witnesses who likely saw The Ripper you haven't looked hard enough.
He claims he was afraid of the sight of blood - extolling the virtues of herbal remedies over surgery. He was gay and he was over six foot tall and had a flamboyant moustache. Other than the womb collector theory (debunked by the taking of the kidney), he's a very unlikely Ripper. His book is fun though. : )
@@jeffreyriley8742 Post-mortem sexual assault is how I'd classify these crimes. Were he a serial killer, I feel Tumblety would be more like Jeffrey Dahmer or Luca Magnotta - killing men.
@@lyndoncmp5751 well considering the police had evidence that we no longer have access too maybe something there would've painted a different picture lol
JTR would have had to be able to do several things. He would have had to walk very softly on cobblestone streets because the sound would echo at night. So that means he would have been very quiet. He would have had to know how to overpower the women without them screaming. Which means he had to not only be quiet, he had to do it quickly. And the alleys might have been dark, so he would have needed light to be able to fish around inside of the women to get out body organs. Which person or type of person would be trained to quietly sneak up on an enemy and murder them before they could make a sound and then cut them open with a knife knowing where to cut. There is only one type of person, a soldier trained as a medic. It is almost like he was a ninja.
There would have been no need to “sneak up “ on the victims nor would the dark streets been a problem IF the perpetrator was known by the victims and lived in the area. The perpetrator would have been completely invisible to investigators if he was really a “she”.
Another point against him being a solid suspect is the fact that he wasn't a qualified doctor. He was a snake oil salesman and flamboyant con-artist. He would not have had the training or skills to expertly dissect a body. It seems more likely that he was nothing more than a sex tourist in London, and had plenty to conceal and draw police attention. He was as slippery as an eel though, and used the murders and bungling London police interest to draw attention away from the crimes he did commit and his actual reason for regular trips to London. He was just unlucky to fit a few parameters of the confused profile at the time.
I have some problems with this one. If the letters were from JTR sent to the police and Tumblety was an American, I really do not see him calling the chief as Governor and saying "you won't fix me yet". Even as a fake doctor, he would have known that blood clots in a short time, so putting it in a bottle to write a letter with, highly unlikely. Those words were clearly written by someone from England, because we never used the term Boss for anyone else except a boss. Since he thrived on the attention of being American, he would have spoken like an American. And even if his family were Irish, he should have maintained something of Irish accent. But merely living in London as a foreigner does not mean they suddenly pick up the slang and write it.
Even with the high bar you always set, this video is something special! Fascinating, and so much information that was new to me.
That's very kind of you, Charlie.
This guy was not Jack the Ripper, but he was one heck of a character. Very entertaining video. Thank you.
Yes he was. Fits the profile perfectly. He either did it himself or paid someone else to do it for him.
Totally agree.
Tumblety had extensive knowledge of whole of London.
Examine his movements. But also look at someone who knew the area like the back of his hand. Had a place nearby, where he could vanish for some sleep after wandering around at 4am, to be in bed by 5am.
It doesn't seem very likely he'd flee the country due to sex crimes but stay for multiple horrific murders. Agreed it wasn't him
I’ve been living in London for six years and it’s not an easy city to navigate.
Thank you, Lloyd.
@@JackTheRipperTours You are welcome.
Tumblety is buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester, NY.
How in the world could Tumblety remain inconspicuous with that gigantic mustache?
Because he was. Over 46 sworn testimonies and depositions of Tumblety in the last 20 years of his life were in agreement that he spent his evenings in the slums of every city he went to dressed down life a homeless person walking in the darkest parts of the street. At no time did ANY eyewitnesses say he walked the evenings showing off a gigantic mustache. All stated that he waxed it pitch black and it was not gigantic.
@@michaelhawley2283 that's abit odd tbh lurking in the shadows of a slum in a foreign country when murders are taking place lol
It was common then

This is a quality presentation. I've always seen Tumblety as one of three main suspects. Why on earth are we not able to access the Scotland Yard arrest brief? Well done.
Thank you, Anthony. My suspicion on the Special Branch files not being accessible is that they are related to the Fenian movement.
@@JackTheRipperTours its hard to explain or justify a permanent suppression order.
He would not have just given up killing if it was him, he was a con artist and swindler.
Thank you for your kind words, Magnus, and for those interesting and valid points.
Well maybe fear for women which became fury and anger.
To me these murders are for show - to be seen .
@@jamescorlett5272 I agree
Thanks.

I agree Lechmere known as Cross sounds a good suspect ..maybe he left his signature on 2 of the bodies with Cross's carved into them .. we'll probably never know.
Loved the video mate well done could you do one about James Kelly?
Hi Stefan. Yes, indeed, he is on my list to do!
An excellent and very well researched and documented video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is the best documentary on Tumblety I have heard. Will be listening to more. So much information that I haven't heard and loved the whole tone of it. I used to think it was Tumblety but as more questions came up I changed my mind. I think it would be a local man and if any I suspect lechmere.
Very informative video, well done
Thanks for this- I really enjoy Michael Hawley's book The Ripper's Haunts.
My own suspect is Lechmere, but
Tumblety is a fascinating character outside of the JtR stuff. He's one of the most colorful and eccentric haracters of the 19th century.
I'd love to see a movie or Netflix show made about his life.
He was the commissioner, Lechmere executed
I'm also more suspect of Lechmere.
Tumblety stands out too much. His height, accent and mustache would have been picked up by witnesses. Add the constant police attention and lack of oppurtunity and he seems even less likely.
@@simonkolar5478 And the fact that he stopped killing even though he lived for years after the Whitechapel ones.
There is so much rubbish on RUclips it is wonderful to come across a detailed, balanced and well researched item such as this. Submitted as a thesis this would get you a first.
His surname sounds like something Charles Dickens would have come up with

What a character! This is the most compehensive set of information on the subject I've seen. Presented with Sir Richard Jones' outstanding quality, it might turn into the script for a really good film.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very informative 👍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 well done

Tumblety has always been my favorite contender for Jack the Ripper - if only because of his rabid hatred of women! I heard he kept a large cupboard in the US, full of medical jars containing woman's wombs and sexual organs saying "This is where women belong"! Horrid character!
Apparently there was a lot of hatred towards women in Whitechapel back then.
I too agree that Tumblety is the best suspect.
Thanks.
Elizabeth long seen a man with Annie Chapman the night of the omicide. Long described the man of other 40 Age.
Could it be out of all these suspects we know that not one of them is Jack. What are the odds. Enjoyed the video.🙂
Pleased you enjoyed it, Jack.
The odds are extremely high.
@@patavinity1262 don't know about extremely high as I mean the police likely had some indications to go by like they went threw alot of people calling door by door etc lol
You can spend actual years reading nothing but Jack the Ripper books.
Nah. Now and then you have to read letters, bills, food packets etc.
Just kidding 😂.
Hi Bill. I am going to be doing a full Cutbush video soon. Just filming the locations now. Thank you for your kind words.

He's not mentioned in this video because this one is about Tumblety.
@@JackTheRipperTours I know that, but he seems to be a suspect that never gets a mention. Yes! For years I've though it was Lechmere. Still do.
When was this documentary made? I watched something on Tumblety in the 90’s on tv that I’ve been trying to find. 🙏

But I would be interested in somebody like yourself doing research on this possibility as you are very good at research and unlike many people in this field seem to keep an open mind.
would be interesting if someone could track where his "samples of uterus'" went and do a dna test on them to compare to the victims

Muy buena serie por favor traduscan el audio al español.
Waterloo, NY, is right next door to Seneca Falls, which is the birthplace of women's rights in the U.S.. He must have loved it there :)
I think the ripper was Jacob Rees-mogg
After time and time again ,I think Mr. Sims is the most brilliant mind among these men.
33:27, a good point why Tumblety is the best candidate for being JTR.
This guy is the epitome of the comical scammer, right down to the fake moustache.
Richard, will you do a video on Montague John Druitt?
Wow. If the "Great American Doctor" lived today, I think his name would be Dr. Bullshit!...lol.
Lol!
@357lockdown - There's still a lot of crackpots peddling bullshit in this day and age, and getting very wealthy too!
PS - strangulation would take way too long….
Lechmere's my suspect.
Because you watched one documentary? Great research! Brexit voter by any chance?
@@Stantheman848 Brexit voter? WTF? I think she knows more than most dude. You represent those who absolutely fall arse over tit to discredit the Lechmere theory for maybe another reason other than just disagreeing perhaps? Come on...spill!
@@Stantheman848 I mean even the reason for saying it was only that documentary it still does highlight that he 100% is the prime suspect for that murder and the police never even questioned him.
if it was not him where did the rings come from?.
Love the different versions of Jack the Ripper.😊
Tumblety wasn’t the murderer, he was the commissioner….
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE LECHMERE THEORY?
It's an interesting theory, James.
TUMBLETY CONFESSION IS IN : A SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF DR. FRANCIS TUMBLETY.
He's not the killer....but he was
Aiding the killer ...probably hired dude to do his dirty work to collect fresh body parts for his weird obsession.... also think he was look out and that why killer was never caught....
You’re close, it’s correct
Personally I lean towards Charles Lechmere as JTR. That said, they were both complete psychopaths.
(The thumbnail on this Video is the one i am referring to as looking like the drawing of the man speaking to Liz Stride with the same hat)
I honestly don't believe any of the main suspects are the Ripper.
IF Tumblety was involved I don't Believe he committed the murders himself - the younger Man said to travel with Francis could have been perfect for job .
Modern theorist say they doubt Jack was a Doctor and or a member of the upper class. What do you fine people think about that assessment?
I think it is probably correct, James.
Yes.. more likely a local worker.
Good video but I don’t think that Tumblety was Jack The Ripper
Pros:
I really don't know if Jack the Ripper was necessarily a Misogynist, but he definitely had a hatred of Prostitutes. So the "fallen women" claim definitely holds up.
It's also pretty suspicious he had those 2 rings at the time of his death.
Cons:
Most serial killers hold something in common with their victims.
That guy was full of shit.
he did it for science and medical reform, it wasn't his hatred though he considered them animals.
isn't that a hoax
@@michaelhawley2283 he wasn't a nice man. But I do admire his whiskers 🙂
@@blrenx this channel is about murder and extreme poverty, but his voice is nice and soothing, and makes it all ok! I love these videos.
Did they ever compare Tumblety's handwriting with the Jack the Ripper letter?
Interesting, and quite a lot of research involved, more than Tumblety deserved. Too much time gone and not enough facts to ever figure out who performed these horrible murders. I think if Scotland Yard had these files, they would have just said they did, but they should conclusively say yeah or nay for the record.
Jack was a local man, below average height, about 30, heterosexual. Tumblety was a foreigner, over six feet tall, 55, homosexual.
DNA evidence has recently determined that the White Chapel 💈 Barber, Aaron Kosminski is Jack the Ripper.
What is your source please?
The DNA evidence is from a shawl that may not have even been owned by the supposed victim. Also, the type of DNA test done is one that can only exclude a particular suspect, it can't identify one.
Too many RUclips experts who don't actually study the evidence . It's been widely said that there was no proof the shawl was the victims .
I think that with all the information divulged in this video , it 's very likelly that FT was in fact the Ripper 🔪🔪
Pleased you enjoyed it, Andrew.
Did he have the knife and anatomical skills.
Yes,,he claimed to have been a Dr during the Civil War.
The book Suspect (shown in the clip is quite gd & in depth).
Also, if true, a collection of pickled wombs isn't really what most keep around the house.
I always thought Tumblety might be good for these murders….
Maybe he put it in his pocket when he was killing them.
@@michaelhawley2283 Joseph Lawende, who saw a man with Cathrine Eddowes in Mitre Square 15 minutes before her death very likely saw JTR,
George Hutchenson also saw a man with Mary Kelly on the night of her death who might or might not have been the Ripper,
Israel Schwartz most certainly saw the man who killed Elizabeth Stride, Among some other possible witnesses,
What MacNaghten stated is irrelevant there and I don’t view his opinion on everything JTR related as gospel.
Witness descriptions describe a man of average height with a small mustache,
Nothing on the scale of a massive handlebar one ala Tumblety, and there is the matter of his age,
Just about all the witness descriptions of JTR describe a man who was in his twenties or thirties, younger than Tumblety at that time who would have been in his late fifties.
The Ripper didn't sexually assault any of the victims, though. That actually works in Tumblety's favor.
Agreed. Almost certainly not the Ripper. He doesn't fit the profile. 90% of the suspects don't fit.
@@jeffreyriley8742 Post-mortem sexual assault is how I'd classify these crimes. Were he a serial killer, I feel Tumblety would be more like Jeffrey Dahmer or Luca Magnotta - killing men.
Didn't he walk in the shadows of the slums dressed like a homeless man when he had no call too while possessing a weird hatred of women lol
@@lyndoncmp5751 well considering the police had evidence that we no longer have access too maybe something there would've painted a different picture lol

Damn I wish I could see this great american doctor to ease my shoulder pain
Just not at night and in a crowd.
Early 1970's started taken trips to London at least once or twice a year.
I have always believed Tumblety was the Whitechapel murderer ever since watching a documentary on PC Evans' discovery of the Littlechild letter.
He went to Rochester? UK?
I'm telling you, Felix Compowsky
