Isn't that refreshing on RUclips, it's creepy how many people want the creepiness rather than realising these were real women and this was a real murder that affected everyone of that time. I advocate for the truth to, which is horrendous enough on it's own 🙂✌️🦘🇦🇺🦘.
Agreed. This is the first time I've come across this channel and I am shortly going to look through it's previous output :) I too have an aversion to the sensationalist documentary presentation style, preferring unpadded, fact-driven narration that is calm and as relaxing as ASMR media attempts. A similar YT channel I love is "Well, I Never" for the same reasons.
It's almost a pity the name of the channel references "The Ripper" because it's actually a brilliant Victorian history channel that covers so much more than the murders and their perpetrator(s)? This was an excellent (as always) presentation. I have thoroughly enjoyed every episode I have watched.
It's because it started the other way around - first, Richard and his colleagues wanted to educate about Jack the Ripper, then they included other crimes and / or interesting facts about Victorian England 😊.
The police called the murderer the Whitechapel murderer. The only letter that I believe is legitimate is the from hell letters which never uses the phrase Jack the ripper that is a media created and public created name.
I did a Jack the Ripper walking tour (not affiliated with this channel, I'm quite sure) in 2005 and during that tour nearly every myth stated in this video was given as fact. I've had the image of the top hat wearing, cart riding, aristocratic man stalking a group of friends in the streets of a foggy London etched in my mind for years, not by Hollywood, but by the very people who walk those streets daily. Great job setting the record straight. Love your channel!
If the Whitechapel Murderer had been trundling through the narrow streets in a coach and horses, he would have been very easy to spot, follow and identify!
There's even a so called medium who gives a tour and uploaded it on youtube that gave all these myths as facts. Making herself an obvious fraud. Whether there are mediums who get in touch with spirits or not is up for debate, but this one most obviously is telling lies..
To be fair, the killer would most likely used multiple different items of clothing so as to potentially throw off the police. Why it's true he didn't wear a top hat or cape during at least some of his killing, he may have worn this attire some time in his life. Just saying.
Stephen Knight was on the correct track but lacked real data so was shrugged off. Inspector Abberline told a reporter the solution lies at the TOP of society. Donald Swanson and Sir Robert Anderson both stated the culprit died in a lunatic asylum shortly after the murders. Only one suspect did. Sir William Gull. The best medium of 1888, Robert Lees, took detectives to Gulls house. A Google story a few weeks ago claimed an AI robot. given all available data on the case , claimed it was Sir William Gull. Gull did the cutting but not the initial killing. Several people are envolved. The final answer will be complex. But it does envolve the monarchy and Mary Kelly who has committed treason.

Late to the party on this one, but I must note the significance of "some authors" using the Top Hat image on their books. Now Mr. Jones, what fine producer of historical videos, with decades of doing JTR tours in London and highly regarded expertise on the topic, would publish a book with such a trope on the cover? Blame it on the publisher! Nevertheless, another enjoyable contribution to the channel, sir!
Wow, #10 was news to me. Myths 1-9 I wholeheartedly agree with, and #10 makes a great deal of sense. Thanks for the new info (#10) and reasserting the info I already knew, 1-9. I think any neophyte JTR "investigator/fan" should view this video.

Another almost certain myth about the killer is that he was left-handed. This is based on the remarks of one of the physicians who examined one of the bodies and expressed the opinion that the direction of the wounds suggested that they were the work of someone who may have been a sinistral.
Jack the Ripper escaped in H.G. Wells’ Time Machine to the early 1980s where he was caught by Wells and sent into Infinity. There was a really good documentary on it years ago.

Hiya Richard, this vlog is one of your best in the last few months, it covered everything I wanted to know, if the girls new each other, that sort of thing, I'm going to London next year and I'm definately doing a Jack The Ripper Tour, it'll be brilliant, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
I was hoping to find out the truth on whether or not Jack the ripper was actually the lockness monster. I remember seeing it in a movie and it made alot of sense to me.
Pleasantly rational. Thanks for dispelling the myths. Whoever the murderer was, I'll bet he wouldn't have imagined people would be intensely interested in his crimes and identity 135 years later.! Human beings hate mysteries to be unsolved, don't we?
I've always agreed that JTR was a media sponsored serial killer. The news hit the London papers and they ran with it massively. I know that other papers did cover the case but in a much smaller way and without all the sensational artwork. The other murderers you mentioned as preceding JTR but having higher body counts were mostly from the 'provinces' and wouldn't have bothered the London press. Interesting side note and may also be a myth - Apparently the residents of Rugeley applied to the Home Office to have the town name changed after Palmers conviction due to the notoriety. The Home Secretary at the time shared the same surname so offered to rename the town Palmerston. Small wonder the residents declined. One for you to check out Richard if you are interested.
That is really interesting about the Rugeley name change suggestion, Sharron. I had not heard that, so will definitely check it out. Thanks for alerting me to it.
I've seen it reported that there were numerous gangs in the area; indeed, one of the early, non-canonical victims described being attacked by 2 or 3 men. Could it be that these killings were some sort of gang iniation ritual? Each committed by a new individual or small group, but under general instructions, explaining the common modus operandi? I also think, if it was one individual responsible for all, a constable may have been the perpetrator. That would easily explain how easily he evaded capture. Did constables receive much training in anatomy, first aid, etc? I do believe "Jack" must have had anatomical knowledge to locate and harvest trophies. A non-pregnant uterus is not large, and located deep in the pelvis. I'm an M.D. and I couldn't find one without really good lighting, especially in a matter of minutes. With today's tech, the kidney sent to Lusk would have had DNA analysis to see if it truly matched the victim.
The non canonical victim was named Emma Elizabeth Smith. She was attacked in the early hours of Tuesday the 3rd of April 1888. Subsequently Emma died on the 4th of April at 9 am in the London Hospital Whitechapel.
Might a butcher in a meat factory transfer his organ removal skills to a human. Brutally delicate work, Mitre Square, night of double event, that quick and all in darkness?
@@davekeating. Charles Allen Lechmere worked for Pickford's a slaughter house, he delivered meat. His mother also owned a cat's meat business that slaughtered horses.
That hour went by quickly. Admittedly, i knew the majority of those facts, but your narration was very entertaining nonetheless. When are we going to do our videos on Jack The Ripper films, Richard? I think I might send you an email to set a date.
Myth Nine rings true in some respects. Two rings forcibly removed. Something I didn’t know. This had to be the killer. Souvenirs? Ripper known for removing body parts, not personal belongings. But who removed victim’s rings from the murder scene? And why? Why not the doctor or police if they saw potential symbols of Freemasonry? The graffiti at another location was removed by order of police. Was killer(s) laying a false trail - this time pointing suspicion at Freemasonry, and not International Jewery, but the coppers weren’t having any of it?
Was there not a myth that the two brass rings were found in the possession of Francis Tumblety? Also was he not suspected of being the batty street lodger?
Yes, supposedly he was buried with 2 cheap rings. And a woman running a doss house on Batty st (around the corner from where Liz Stride was killed) claimed that an American with a fair mustache who had rented a room with a bloody shirt during the night. Of course, no real evidence of this.
Still convinced there was no 'Jack' at all. I concede it is possible a couple of them were murdered by the same killer, but there were plenty of murders before and after. The whole thing was hysteria and a media hype circus. That is my take.
I'll state my reasoning why. Attacks on prostitues were pretty common, as arguably as today. Having some fun and taking a few coins was an easy nights entertainment for scumbags in a destitute area. Sticking with the canonical 5 - The first murder was very likely to be Lechmere and what details we know about him, he seemed level headed enough to keep his head down, ruling him out of the others imo. Cutting a throat and removing body parts are 2 different skill sets. Jumping to Mary Kelly, this absolutely screams out ( no pun intended ) as a copycat, by this time hysteria was at its height and just doesnt fit with the others. As for the doctors, forensic medicine was primitive at best, being able to state they were all killed by the same person was impossible. I'm going to say that it was mostly just copycats, they wanted to murder some destitutes. So join in when you have alibi's for the other killings and get away with it.
as in star trek.when scottie is accused of murdering three women on a distant planet.when it turns out it was some sort of an alien being who thrived on sheer terror.and thus had lived through time, and had killed though out the centuries, including the Whitechapel murders.
I live in a small town in the Midwest with a population of about 1,000. We don't know everyone in town. I remember talking to a neighbor who had grown up here commenting in how there were a great many people living here that she didn't know. We are nowhere near as populated as that area in Whitechapel.🇺🇸
My opinion. Jack the ripper was a group of killers, everyone forgets about the woman who was attacked by the 3-5 people before the rest of this happened.
we dont know if the white chapel murderer was caught. We only know he / she / they weren't caught for the series of murders that's famous. Its possible they may have been caught elsewhere for different crime's
I live around the corner, have done my whole life Ten Bells is still there but a joke of a tourist pub, if you want a good old London boozer try the pride of spitalfield just off Brick lane. It's in the middle of all the killings.
It was obviously someone local - George Hutchinson for instance . Central. It's a long walk from Romford after a days work and walking back again and hanging around Dorset street in the rain 🤔
My favourite myth is that there is no proof one person was responsible for all 5 five murders. Over 135 yrs of fascination, interest and curiosity about a serial killer that may never existed at all
Great research - though I think a mistake was made regarding the date on a newspaper. At around the 27 min mark, it shows the date on The Eastern Post being in October, not November.
At 22:54 Jack the Ripper appears in what he most likely would have looked like & been wearing, a bowler hat. He appears as a larger than life figure looming over the streets he terrorised, disguised as a chimney of some sort! Or maybe it's a chimney disguised as JtR!
Also, "Spring Heeled Jack" kinda morphed with "Jack the Ripper." Spring Heeled Jack was kind of a boogie man/Loki creature who wore a top hat and cape.
FWIW: There is an interesting 'take' on The Ripper in the episode _"Comes The Inquisitor"_ {Season/Series 2, Episode 21} of the science fiction TV show *BABYLON 5.*
13:37 Jack The Ripper didn’t wear a top hat! Next you’ll be telling me he didn’t have a moustache and didn’t twist the ends of his moustache while waiting in the shadows while waiting for his next victim or after a kill!!!
it would be apparent ,this ripper chap needed an umbrella,at some stage, during the night, and a decent overcoat.good to know what the weather was doing in 1888.
I wonder how much criminal profiling went on at the time, I imagine not much. It seems pretty obvious the torso murders were not by the same person, given how they just don't fit the clear pattern. It is more blurry on earlier victims though, as these sprees tend to start crude and escalate into very elaborate types of killings as they perfect their 'monstrous art'.
Have you ever addressed the suggestions of Hallie Rubenhold that the targets of the Whitechapel Murderer were killed while sleeping rough? I found the idea very interesting.
Reporters certainly haven't changed over all these years. But I wonder if a reporter ever found anyone who knew something solid that was ignored, this creature couldn't have been in that area all the time without someone thinking this guy isn't right. I don't know a person that's never had that feeling. Was there a public place where they discussed what caused their deaths or any time the public would have come together, because I could guarantee he would have been there if he was a serial killer, ugh, it's so frustrating, fake psychic's fake ghost hunters, that makes me made to. I often wonder if the first man who found the first woman was the one interrupted 🥴🤦♀️ it's frustrating for homicide today with all the technology we have, how helpless would they have felt back then. You have made this so calm and professional I'm actually leaning forward actively curious, instead of just listening, not much good from Tasmania Australia, and knowing absolutely no one from that era 🥺.
I am a total beginner and wish to get an answer here. I always wanted to ask this question: If majority of the canonical 5, the most likely Jack the Ripper murder victims, did not die in Whitechapel (correct me if I am wrong but only Nichols and Stride were found murdered in Whitechapel but the other 3, Chapman, Eddowes and Kelly were not murdered in Whitechapel), why do we still consider Jack the Ripper murders happened in Whitechapel? 2 murders were also committed in Spitalfields (Chapman and Kelly), why don't we consider these murders happened in Spitalfields instead? Hope to get an insight here. Thanks
These women were attacked from behind, slit open and had their intestines and organs scrambled. It was a demeaning death for them after a life of suffering and poverty.
So I guess I’ll have scrap the short story I’m working on about a doctor called Jacques de Ripper who travels around by coach and horses through the thick London fog at night, dressed in a topper, ready to grab his Gladstone Bag as the driver comes upon another fallen woman! Ah well!
I have an AI app in which there are multiple drawing styles available. For sheets and giggles I put in "if Jack the Ripper was a vampire. Almost all had the top hat and a cape-like jacket. One was a cat for some reason.
It is highly unlikely he carried any type of bag all because he would be too afraid that he would be jerked up and lynched as other people almost were. Also a man that wore top hats for the most part was considered at least relatively at least a man of means and in the East end is particularly at that time of night he would have stuck out like a sore thumb if he had a top hat on but also the story had already started that he was a doctor and people equated that with the top hat so it would be very strange and very dangerous for a man to walk around with a top hat on
Very informative. I only wish someone would show what these other described hats looked like. “a peaked hat”, “a sailor’s hat “, “the kind of hat a carman might wear”, etc. No need to show a top hat!
If his name really was Jack The Ripper I'd expect that the police would have picked him up easily.
Easy to trace his mail. Had a friend named named David Hass. People thought "H" was his middle initial.
lol, with a name like that, who else could he be?
@thecritic8096whoosh

at least we know his Christian name...you only need his surname...to complete the puzzle.

I initially put an image of a pot and kettle on that section of the video, but then took it off. I'm glad you spotted the irony of the quote!

Thank you for the video 🍻👍
Point 3 is important. He killed more than 5.
I do love 1944s The Lodger. Laird Cregar played Mr. Slade (Jack or...the fiend) and carried the black bag.
Hi Choppy. Glad you enjoyed it. I was pleased with it. Looking forward to seeing you next year.
I was hoping to find out the truth on whether or not Jack the ripper was actually the lockness monster. I remember seeing it in a movie and it made alot of sense to me.
Truth or Bullsh*t! presented by Henry Silva! 😆
Charles Letchmere in my eyes after looking at this case isn't innocent , but now i feel like you there was more than one involved 💯
Interesting. Didn't know the top hat was established that early
I take it you don't watch many screen adaptations of Charles Dickens stories? Top hats go back way before 1888
Jack The Ripper-Bob The Builder-same middle name. Coincidence?
I'd believe a doctor over MacNaughten any day.
@@f.o.c.s.1028 Martha Tabram as well.
@walkawaycat431 I think she fits with the others. Very possibly same killer
I wonder if the reason the murders caught the public imagination is because the murderer was never caught
Yes.
No, he had already caught the public imagination greatly through the press.
Always love watching things about Jack
The Ripper!
The killer must have had a field day with all those stories.
That is an interesting take actually, I havent given much thought to it but it would and could make sense.
The doctor's evidence knocks that into a cocked hat.
@@GenusUnknown It makes no sense at all.
I am certain whoever the Whitechapel murderer was they were responsible for more than just the 5 deaths that have been attributed to them
Great video, on an interesting side note there is an episode of Babylon 5 that features a character who is implied to have been Jack The Ripper.
as in star trek.when scottie is accused of murdering three women on a distant planet.when it turns out it was some sort of an alien being who thrived on sheer terror.and thus had lived through time, and had killed though out the centuries, including the Whitechapel murders.
Agreed, I've always thought that Jack only killed one of the double event victims and that Mary Kelly was done in by her boyfriend.
we dont know if the white chapel murderer was caught. We only know he / she / they weren't caught for the series of murders that's famous. Its possible they may have been caught elsewhere for different crime's
Lets build a time machine and go back to may 30th 1888. And stay until December 31st .
Excellent
However I don’t think that many people really think his name was Jack.
That isn't how he meant it. He's talking of the dear boss letter where the writer pens himself the name jack the ripper. The letter obviously fake.
"the police had dismissed finger printing as a method of getting the killer"
How many of the pubs mentioned still exist?
The Ten Bells is the only one that is still a pub. The Queen's Head, Bricklayers Arms and Frying Pan are still standing but are no longer pubs.
@@JackTheRipperTours Thank you for replying
I live around the corner, have done my whole life Ten Bells is still there but a joke of a tourist pub, if you want a good old London boozer try the pride of spitalfield just off Brick lane.
It's in the middle of all the killings.
Richard, you have such a soothing voice. 😊
I can say with absolute certainty the world's first serial killer was a "caveman".
It was obviously someone local - George Hutchinson for instance . Central. It's a long walk from Romford after a days work and walking back again and hanging around Dorset street in the rain 🤔
My favourite myth is that there is no proof one person was responsible for all 5 five murders.
Over 135 yrs of fascination, interest and curiosity about a serial killer that may never existed at all
The most popular myth about Jack "The Ripper" is that the identity has been verified.
Great research - though I think a mistake was made regarding the date on a newspaper. At around the 27 min mark, it shows the date on The Eastern Post being in October, not November.
Newspapers reporting wild speculation as fact?! Good thing they stopped doing that :p
at 11:58 is that Steve Coogan?
At 22:54 Jack the Ripper appears in what he most likely would have looked like & been wearing, a bowler hat. He appears as a larger than life figure looming over the streets he terrorised, disguised as a chimney of some sort! Or maybe it's a chimney disguised as JtR!
I see that too 😅
They probably did not know each other but I do believe they all knew him. This could be why they weren't afraid of him.
When I heard that people honestly believe that Jack the Ripper was the murderer's actual name I felt my brain cells dying.
We will never know.
Mr Sebastian of 14b Heresford lane, taken by the vorlons and brought into their service
13:37 Jack The Ripper didn’t wear a top hat! Next you’ll be telling me he didn’t have a moustache and didn’t twist the ends of his moustache while waiting in the shadows while waiting for his next victim or after a kill!!!
I spent 50 hours looking at handwriting - one man who did a LOT of writing- his lists and lists of tailors in Whitechapel....
It would be a pisser if his real name was Jack though.
it would be apparent ,this ripper chap needed an umbrella,at some stage, during the night, and a decent overcoat.good to know what the weather was doing in 1888.
None of the evidence suggests that though. The killer was seen with victims talking to them on 4 of the 5 occasions.
How do you know his real name wasn't Jack the Ripper, that kind of off-hand sloppiness led to him not being caught 👈😑
Thanks
Of the canonical 5, only Nichols was killed in the parish of Whitechapel.
These women were attacked from behind, slit open and had their intestines and organs scrambled.
It was a demeaning death for them after a life of suffering and poverty.
I was really surprised to hear that they didn’t catch him I mean they knew he’s first name
9th November!!! I spotted the deliberate mistake when the newspaper heading said 10th October as the following day!!! Do I win anything????
A copy of the paper is yours!!! I can only say, oops!
@@JackTheRipperTours This is the most correct about something I have ever been in my entire life hehehe
So I guess I’ll have scrap the short story I’m working on about a doctor called Jacques de Ripper who travels around by coach and horses through the thick London fog at night, dressed in a topper, ready to grab his Gladstone Bag as the driver comes upon another fallen woman! Ah well!
Sounds a great story to me Keith. I think you should press on with it.
Also a man that wore top hats for the most part was considered at least relatively at least a man of means and in the East end is particularly at that time of night he would have stuck out like a sore thumb if he had a top hat on but also the story had already started that he was a doctor and people equated that with the top hat so it would be very strange and very dangerous for a man to walk around with a top hat on
Multiple killings doesn't make one a serial killer. Some still don't know the true meaning of it, its real definition.
Very informative. I only wish someone would show what these other described hats looked like. “a peaked hat”, “a sailor’s hat “, “the kind of hat a carman might wear”, etc. No need to show a top hat!
Are there no photographs of Inspector Aberline? I remember seeing only sketches.🇺🇸
Myth 10, IF this is a myth?, It is a very, very obscure one !.
