I am so glad that you respected William Wallace in this video. Almost every video of him I see tries to be very disrespectful about him. I found out a few months ago that I directly descend from William Wallace’s brother John Wallace. And I couldn’t be more proud🥲

    • @ClarenceCochran-ne7du

John Wallace, William's younger brother was executed in 1307, two years after his brother, in exactly the same fashion, Hanging, Drawing and Quartering. He was 32 years old at the time of his execution. His known issue were Thomas, Adam and Richard (no mention of any direct female descendants in his genealogy, there may/may not have been).

Born in America, but my family is from Scottland and my family Ancestry fought bravely in this war. There is something in our DNA that transcends time or geography because I too, am a proud Scott Warrior and the sounds of Bag Pipes brings a tear to my eye, goosebumps on my skin, and a tremendous sense of Honor, Dignity, and self sacrifice. Our family moved to America, served in the American Civil War, then later served in World War 1 and World War 2. Now we face new oppressors in modern terrorists. You never truly feel the gravity of this music until you are laying to rest a Scottish warrior. They played this song at my grand fathers funeral, (He was a world war 2 veteran) I was overwhelmed with emotion as they played this song, and shot rifles into the sky.

  • @scottw.3258
    @scottw.3258 6 месяцев назад +10

    1. de Moray was the leader of the Scots army at Stirling Bridge. He was the senior Man, the experienced soldier. Wallace was nothing more than a 'scrapper'.
    2. This is not Wallace's sword. It's far too large and unwieldy. This sword is a 15th century piece created by King James IV. It is made up of 3 different swords. It is rumoured that Wallace's actual sword was smelted with another 2 swords in order to create this piece. This is a ceremonial sword, or at very best, a sword used for duelling.
    3. Wallace most certainly was not 6'6" or taller. The average height at the time was 5'5". What was considered tall then, would then not be considered tall today. Wallace may have been tall by comparison to others. Historians believe Wallace was perhaps 5'8" - 5'10", certainly not the giant he's described as in chronicles written 150-200 years after his death.
    4. Wallace showed his lack of military understanding at Falkirk. Once word had reached Longshanks(who was in Linlithgow), that Wallace was only 7 miles away (at modern day Shield Hill), Wallace would also have been aware that Longshanks was once more on the march.
Wallace had Callander Wood to his rear, he should've used that to his advantage and retreated towards Stirling. At very worst, Longshanks would've caught up prior to him reaching Stirling, but he could then have utilised the guerilla tactics, ambushing Longshanks army, rendering his cavalry and archers useless.
Had he managed to reach Stirling, then he meets Longshanks on perhaps the same ground de Moray defeated the English a year earlier.
As it was, Wallace showed a complete lack of understanding, and was humiliated as a result. He then ran away to France.
Wallace wasn't a freedom fighter. He was no different to any other Noble. He would've gained had Scotland been 'freed' in his lifetime, make no mistake about it. He was in it for himself. He was being heavily taxed, which he obviously didn't enjoy, so he wanted 'home rule' so his taxes would be reduced.
The image we have today of Wallace is an overly romanticised picture painted by the Georgians, and the Victorians. Wallace was an itch on Longshanks rear end which Longshanks eventually decided to get rid of. Many people were executed the same way Wallace had been. It was as common in Medieval times as Crucifixion had been centuries earlier.
As Scots, we have to start learning real history, not this romanticised nonsense we've been getting taught for the last 150-200 years.

I remembet seeing "Braveheart" and walking from the Theater extremely disappointed on how badly Randall Wallace (the author of the book the movie was drawn from) had destroyed the story of Wallace.
Wallace was never "Braveheart." That nickname/title belongs to Robert the Bruce.
Isabella of France, the future Princess of Wales, was 11 years old when Wallace was executed. She was still living in France and not married to Edward II yet.
Robert the Bruce did not betray Wallace to Edward the first.
Wallace didn't support the Bruce family's claim to the throne. Wallace supported John Baliol, the puppet king installed by Edward I. There's actually no evidence that Wallace and Bruce ever met in the historical record. Wallace was betrayed by John de Menteith, a minor Scottish knight loyal to Edward I.
Edward I died in 1307, two years after Wallace' execution.
No, "Braveheart," though stirring, was so full of Historical Inaccuracies it bears little resemblance to the real William Wallace.
