Yep. I can’t really remember my cell phone number (though I’ve had it for a couple of years now) but I can still remember every word of not only Juicy Fruit, but Big Red and Doublemint gum jingles. Shit is inescapable and time is incapable of deluding it.
I recorded "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" off CBS in 1988 and remember that it was interrupted by a CBS Special Report for a minute or so during the dinosaur scene with Simone. Geez, the stuff that sticks with you from an '80s childhood!
I remember that Diet Coke commercial when it first aired. As I am older, I get to see a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff of how they accomplished so much in the movie. And seeing the commercial now, I'm kinda amazed they kept the high production values up for just this commercial! Wow!
The animation of Roger here is obviously new, and unique to the ad...but all of the shots of Jessica appear to be lifted from the actual movie. It's a combination of new and reused footage. I can only assume that the ad was shot by Robert Zemeckis or a 2nd unit director during production, so the actual cost of sets/production value/Bob Hoskins etc are built into the budget of the movie.
@@80sCommercialVault It might’ve been cheaper, faster and easier to have Roger wearing an animated trenchcoat and hat, with an animated Diet Coke can. But nope, they went with something animatronics or puppeteering to move the trenchcoat and can around.
Man, I remember the Sears WishBook catalog for that year was Disney-crazy, with both the theatrical releases of WFRR and "Oliver and Company". Complete with an expenses-paid vacation giveaway to Walt Disney World sweepstakes. All a little over half a year prior to the opening of Disney/MGM Studios (which Roger Rabbit became a MASSIVE marketing move for it in the end of the 80s).
The McDonald's Olympic hopefuls commercial at the beginning is so adorable! Commercials from the 80's and 90's were generally better and more enjoyable to watch. Would love to see the Saturday morning cartoons from this year. The Nickelodeon commercial music is classic! I loved the California Raisins commercials as a kid, and I'll always remember the Juicy Fruit commercial jingle. The Diet Coke commercial makes me want to watch "Who's Framed Roger Rabbit" again.
Hershey's Bar None- The woman's transformation in this commercial reminds me of the transformation of the Grand High Witch in the Roald Dahl movie, "The Witches". Butter- "Give em all a little pat of butter" So if I were to give my friends a little pat of butter, can I eat them like the food in this commercial? 😉
I just bought a California Raisin figure at a toy store the other day!! :D Also--that Roger Rabbit Diet Coke commercial is awesome!! :D I forgot about that ad!!
I always wondered all this time what that 'ominous' commercial (Bar None) was, since my copy of Secrets Of Toon Town I got at a flea market many years ago cut out one second in and went to a recording to The Flintstone Kids: Just Say No special. And now I know... As for Nickelodeon? Nicknicknicknick Nick-Nick-Nick... Wait 'till 91~! ;)
Commercials had more life in them and the melodies really pulled you in. The anti-drug ADs really need to start flowing again since the spike in Opioids cases.
I agree they really pulled you in and make want to get that item or listen to that announcement, compared to today's commercials they reign suppreme 80s 90s and early 2000s were 👍🏿
To me, the 80s pretty much represent the pinnacle of wholesome advertising. It's hard to explain, but everything nowadays has a more cynical feel, like the people behind certain commercials now are training to be writers for some sitcom or mature cartoon with a much more outlandish, Adult Swim-esque approach to the humor. These commercials had more of a warm sense of earnestness and heart back then.

Jeez, haven't heard that Juicy Fruit jingle in 30+ years and I was able to sing along to the entire thing. That's some good marketing!

I love Pee-wee‘s Big Adventure! It’s one of my top 10 favorite films of all time.
Word. Was sad that the 30th anniversary tour was cancelled. I love that film.

Dude, I had that same exact showing of Big Adventure I got at a flea market as well. (Only with the CBS Special Report cut out.)

Back then people and companies actually gave a damn about quality. Nowadays, they have a take it or leave it attitude.

I always remember that McDonald Olympic Hopefuls commercial with "Hericles Sinopolis Greco Roman Wrestling" & "Bob Watson Rings"
That Bar None commercial scared the crap out of me when i was a kid.

@James Scott lawsuits, pills, cars we can’t afford, and insurance.
I can remember the Olympics hopefuls commercial so well from when it first aired. It's scary to think those toddlers are in their 30s today.
The taste the taste gonna move you...the gum commercial I remember it funny even the lyrics..wow I was like 10 when it showed. 😊
2:07 - I feel sorry for the people who tuned in to watch these actors, since they all appear during the last 10 minutes of the movie...
Yeah, I was thinking this preview will definitely give people the wrong impression.

@@UltimaEXE Exactly! Most things with a good jingle tend to sell. Especially those commercials with the live choir sound were really hype.
That Reebok commercial was weird.
U B U - not that much different than "U DO U" we say these days.
But I'll say it again CBS had the best Saturday morning lineup in '88!
R.I.P. Bob Hoskins!

They were more family oriented and lots of kids in commercials you hardly see kids now and everyone seems snooty
