Singaporeans Try: $5 A Day Challenge

- Опубликовано: 15 сен 2024
- In this episode of Singaporeans Try, we challenged our participants to live on only $5 budget a day, for an entire week. And that means $5 for transport and food per day! Will they survive throughout week with such a tight budget? Watch the video to find out!
Fact - over 105,000 families in Singapore (about 10%) are living on $1,500 per month and thus, each family member can only afford $5 a day for food and transportation. While this challenge is not a completely accurate representation of what these families have to go through day by day, it truly helped better understand their daily struggle to attain basic necessities and taught us to be more thankful for what we have.

2:42 Jon wiping his mouth with the $2 dollar note 😂
Pineapple Nutella ya
He's trying to taunt them with the cash.
But what he didn't realise is that the note is really dirty

Not everyone has home cooked food at home as an alternative for a source of food when they are broke.. I think the thing everybody takes for granted the most is really the presence of their Mom at home and home cooked food. Just imagine having to live $5 a day with no home cooked food as an alternative resource.
I got a little emotional hearing how they felt about this challenge towards the end cause it reminded me of my primary school days when my family was facing financial difficulties..
Love ur profile
One week no cursing or swearing challenge.
Kim Liong Tan yesss
Kim Liong Tan yessssss
Kim Liong Tan OMG I CANT LIVE
I tried to do that but i failed 5 minutes in.
Kim Liong Tan for Fauzi
It kinda beats the point if people know you are on that challenge, and helps you out. I mean its a good initiative, but yeah
no point if you allow people to treat you.
Jiahao Fong should minese the amount of money that ur friend paid for you/treated you
Jiahao Fong but must rmb, it's a $5 a day challenge, if someone treat 's u don't have to spend ur own $5
fully agree
Jiahao Fong I
True
I think the best thing for this kind of budget would be to go to the supermarket/wholesale grocery once every month and buy a bunch of groceries and take time out to cook. Saves *alot* of money and healthier too.
Yeah tru, you have a point tbh! hard to live healthy in todays world. I really admire those supermarket lunch boxes (bento/doshirak) in places like Japan and Korea. Look so healthy and also cheap.
@Ji Fan
Vegetables may be frozen for a few months. Google it for lots of tips. I use frozen vegetables and pickle them too. :)
Ji Fan
Make them into smoothies :D
$25 a week doesn't seem impossible, $2 for those 5-pack instant noodles (The cheap indomee) and $2 for bread (those Budget ones at NTUC are over 15 slices if I'm not wrong) should last you almost 3 days so realistically if you are on a really tight budget you can eat for $8 a week, the remaining $17 can be used for transport which is about $3 a day. Plain water will be your best friend!
Definitely not easy, the worst situation I was in was that I had no money so I basically skipped lunch and ate breakfast and dinner at home. Thankfully I do have a family to support and provide me with basic necessities!
That's my life struggle and thanks to bursary given by gov helps me a bit or else I will just fast Everyday so I save money and I have to work during holiday n I have find cheap items.... I can't buy thing that I like.....
same no worries . life will get better after we finish our studies
Awesome video👍
OMG!! Ridhwan!!!
Ridhwan Azman hello
hi Ridhwan
fauzi's words during his day 1 made me tear up. because this is my reality, and i'm really grateful they made this video to make people more aware of those who dont have the luxury to spend money as they want. nonetheless, i would be in a much worse condition if not for the bursaries and help the government has given my family. this video was very heartwarming, thanks TSL ❤
*day 3
fauzi should just do it alone for the questions cause majority of the questions he answered and not the other three HAHAHA give them a chance man, fauzi.
Inspiring episode!! Keep up the good work! :)
This is definitely the most educational singaporeans try episode! Good job! 👍🏻
free meals dont count smh
basically my life for the past 3 years or so hahaha when I go to work I just starve myself or drink lots of water. go home and cook my meal of the day. what Fauzi said is right because I live on my needs and not my wants. And as for healthcare, die2 try not to fall sick. If can't afford to go to work just take leave. luckily (or unluckily) currently I'm working part time so I can take off when I want to. just stay at home till I'm better. my pay I spend on groceries so that even if I don't have money to buy things outside I still have food at home. transport wise, I try to topup $20-30 if can afford to. save up all excess coins coz end of the month confirm will use one. though I hate living this way I learn to survive within a tight budget. but that's just my pov
fauzi, food otherwise my school(primary school) cheapest thing is 80 cents chicken rice
Hermione Malfoy wa nice. in my primary school chicken rice always so ex. Now like secondary school chicken rice like the same price.
Hermione Malfoy mine $1.20 for proper rice and noodles leh
I cycle to and fro school daily ,23km each way and pretty much everywhere unless its something important like a wedding ,an exam, a medical appointment etc. I even cycled form Tampines to hillview to visit my relatives during CNY.
On normal days, spend only $2.20 on chicken porridge as refuel for my body as compared to $3.70+ for public transport (I still eat my main 3 meals.) not only do I get fit,I save money! A dollar day may not be much, but it adds up $1.50x5x4x12 =360 a year not including taxi trips and extra travels outside of my commute to school, other wise it would be ~$450 or so maybe even more
this is so helpful for the /brokestudentlife/ lol good takeaways though! we should all be a lot more frugal and minimalist with spending :')
Foreigner problems: $620+ per month for (Secondary) School Fees😭
Unknown - ikr
Unknown - oh wow! this makes me appear very ignorant but I didn't know you guys have to pay for secondary education as well. what about primary?
Unknown - not to mention all the second-tier costs and you have to pay (eg, learning trips and O-levels exam) Lucky im not a foreigner...
wtf is john doing licking money
He is using it as a napkin in spite
Practiscing
i have never been so early ever
This one is a very good challenge. I wish there are more tips (or lobangs). Keep it up ~
I think the only way to get through the week, is to Cook your own meals or get a loaf of Bread, for $1.40 and a jar of jam, and have bread with jam for the week, and maybe a pack of 5 instant noodles for $2 and it can last you for 5 meals.
Omg 2.40 Jon used a 2$ note and wipe his face😂
Hi TSL! I've got a suggestion for SG try. try having tattoos for a week? like there could be several categories such as visible and non visible tattoos, smaller or bigger art etc. would be interesting! I love you guys ❤
just cook.... 10 eggs 2 dollar plus. chicken chop 2 dollar plus a piece. veggies around 1 plus a bunch. add in any carbs u want. pasta, rice or maggie mee. its done. bread for breakfast. with a reasonably priced spread. coffee or tea can be prepared at home. way cheaper. its doable. depends on whether u want to
I believe that living in an area that has lower cost of living would be possible but living in a city with such tight budget is really hard. It happened to me when I started living away from home for Uni and I found everything was more expensive then it was in my hometown that in order to save money, whenever I'm going to be staying at my dorm all day I went and buy like food from the dorm cafe and split them into two for lunch and dinner. I even buy rice that way. Buy alot at once and split them into half. So instead of spending like 10 dollars for two meals I'd spend only like 4-5 dollars instead a day.
5 dollar a day? aiya easy la go Value buy 2 cokes and 4 hello panda how much already
Napalm Junior vry hard to find those stores these days all suddenly shut down
so little money still want buy coke LOL
if I remember correctly its only $1 to buy 2 cokes
Napalm Junior oh ya cos I can live on hello panda and coke
In Brunei, you can find $1 Nasi Katok basically a piece of chicken, sambal and rice.
eat cup noodles everyday :D
Ji Fan but not healthy leii
I think your mind and your friends play an important role in this challenge 😂
NOTIFICATION SQUAD WHERE ARE YOU? LAI LAI!
ImaginativeLuka 来了!
wah, fauzi! thank you for mentioning me. i thought when you said video, you mean insta story not youtube 😂 i'm very surprised.
Do more video like this! Really like it (:
Taking MRT and bus, they cost the same :) Taking 179 from Pionner is cheaper in fact than taking 179 from Boon Lay :) Just fyi though ;)
Great video! Thumbs up ;))
Why do i notice 2 rjc kids featured in these video? (Namely, gwendolyn and shiying)
I always bring $5 to school so not a problem for me.
my fav singaporeans try
Why didn't they bring food from home? Maybe some slice of bread in the tupperware and a bottle of plain water? 🤔
Great episode to raise awareness of the plight of those in the low-income bracket of our society :)
where to look for deals? i always google 1-for-1 promotions HAHAHA
eatigo app!
thank you!
0:15 your primary school teacher may be angry..
lol we do the $2 challenge here in Australia, which means we buy a $1 pack of 1kg oats and eat that for days.
it is lucky that Singapore still has $2 hawker meals, our meals in Australia is $11.
+Ji Fan hahaha then u can call two of the same kind or one each of two different kinds!!!! Would still be cheaper than Australia hahaha.
thrs a stall in tampines west which sells chicken rice for only $1.50. So if youre on a budget + you live near thr, you can go and get food from that stall hehhehehe
I love this challenge. Will try on my own self:)
Do more challenging like this
Go to primary school for food about $1 plus and one cup of ice water is 0.20
Can be done but takes careful planning and life would suck
Food, must go ntuc and buy the huge loaf of bread. 1 dollar plus for a few days! :D
we should always live our lives based on needs instead of wants.
Wooh, the scooter is same is mine😃
Is it just me that I never had any problems with budgeting?
Cheryl Tyt yes just you
Lmao Jon flexing on his two dollar
More screen time for shing pls~
Fauzi is like the only person with no support in this challenge. anyway good perservance.
We The Kings - Sad Song!!!!!!
"Why do I agree to the worst episodes of Singaporeans Try"
Hey! The no smartphone one was the worst
there are 4 members in this video, but 75% of the time only one person talking!
Isnt hitchhiking illegal in Singapore?
They should’ve cycled!!
dont save what is left but save before you spend
The ending was so deep
omg they used WTK song!!!
This episode makes me want to cut down on my money spending
If you really wanna save money on food then just get bread. Like the budget kind with idk...15+ slices?
what i will do is eat INSTANT NOODLES
John: I have not spend one cent on anything since Monday
How much u have left? $4.60
unhealthy options:
-Get a stack of oreos for $1 and eat that for the rest of the day (sometimes 7-11 have)
Me at 4.44"omg is that suntec city!"
John came to my school before when I had camp xd
bring lunch box lah..
yinyi so pretty
one good tip Is to go shop at the valuedollar stores instead HHAHA
Let's say you take bus 53 today, the next day if you take the same bus you actually spend more
Why didn't they bring food from home...?
i spend $10 per day, also quite hard, now i am hungry
Next time try 5$ per week
This is like the singaporean version of team edge 😂😂
taking the train is the same price as taking the bus
If they knew they only had $5.00 per day , they could have packed food from home if they were to get food from the Hawker
Basically, find a good friend to feed u. (Aka me. I’m feedin a friend.)
AYYY !!
Why nobody bring their own food (lunchbox) to eat
plain water + bread + porridge at home = my life 1 week before pay day das right
yay
Jonathan 😂😂 xiao rich, use $2 notes as tissue
No Double-Check Challenge for 1 week hahahaha
Try doing 3 good deeds each day for a week challenge!
I need to pay 6279 school feed I am foreign...

If I I go buy cup noodl 1.60 eat for all meals

5 dollar a day is so much
Fas give u free transport and lunch
So 5 dollar u eat dinner
i live in poineer

5 dollar per day seems impossible to live in sg
Basically the live like a broke sec school student for the week
25 dollars was alws more than enough for me in secondary schl HAHAHAH
