- Captured in summer of 2008, its a unique look at what makes Portland Oregon one of the greatest places on the planet to live and to skate... The monologues in Rip City, for example, though informal and seemingly all over the place are often profound and inspiring. Guys like Donovan Rice, Chet Childress, Ben Krahn, Chris Nukala, Pat Q, and Jay Smay (not all inclusive) deliver on point and down to Earth perspectives that go a long way towards effectively relating to the rest of the world just what it is that makes Portland such a distinct place.

I was so hyped when I randomly saw this on fuel tv a good 10 years ago... it was one of those shows that you unintentionally find while couch surfing and it ends up being so good you never want it to end nor do you blink. But since I first saw it that day it neeeever re aired and I couldn’t find it anywhere! Thank you so so much for this upload. I’m a Portland Oregon native and skateboarder so this documentary is very meaningful to me and Chet Childress is a huge inspiration to me.
R.I.P. old Portland it will never be the same. This video was literally filmed at the last of a era being a era when Portland was actually a amazing secret city to be proud of

i visited Portland for the first time in 2008...i remember being blown away by it's beauty. It's gone downhill a ton in the past 10 years unfortunately.
great video!! really takes me back to my years of ripping up PDX from the early 90's to 2007. Red and Dreamland built some killer parks. I miss the old Portland before the yuppie invasion. I realllllly miss Pier Park!!
Pier park Is still good to go man.
Ya portland is one of the least "open minded" places in the world
Its either you are liberal, pro-trans, pro-democrat, anti-trump or Antifa will literally find you and break your windows
Portland sucks
Yeah, fuck that place
wish the yuppies came back. now its a homeless invasion of legal drugs
hard to believe it's been 10 years already since I first watched this doc on fuel tv... thanks for uploading this!
same
I remember seeing this on Memorial Day when it aired on Fueltv channel. Been looking for this for so long & now I found it. Thanks.
badass documentary, Portland is still great in 2024
no, it's a commie shithole
So rad! Shredding a stranger's mini ramp is unheard of in California, Portland folks sound awesome.
Lol they're really not, trust me.
Portland's filled with a bunch of pompous fuckin assholes who look down on everyone else. There's good ppl here too, tho, just like anywhere else. The ppl with that mini ramp just happened to be alright (they prolly dont even skate it)
Great upload cheers mate
RIP QMan
Why rip?
Wheres brent?
This is great!!! Thank you.
hitchiked to Portland from LA camping along the way just to sk8 burnside 1996
Burnside is for hard chargers.. specially in the 90s.. hope it worked out man. I was ther then too.. a my hood kid going to burnside to try and roll with the big boys as a middle schooler on.
beautiful Doc man, shout out from 2020.
If you haven't seen The Mission that has Krahn in it back in the late 90's... You're missing out. Look it up, HIGHLY recommended.
The 90s were my years there. La Luna, London Underground, The Church Of Elvis.
Street skating at waterfront park
I've been riding moose blanks and they're great I paid 75 bucks for five boards I have a stockpile in my room. It's nice having like a stack of 10 brand new decks just waiting to be skated. The shape of them reminds me of Element Skateboards or Alien Workshop. Any deck I buy from a actual company I put on my wall I don't even skate on cuz it's artwork you know
That spot was amazing. Glad I got to ride it.
"This aint no yuppie place"
Looks like we were all wrong on that one Q
Dude.. I live in Humboldt. Was moving to ocean city but damn.. Portland is on fire!! Shit.. might have to go north east rather than south!!
Love the soundtrack
Rarely does anyone hear about waterfront park in the 90s. Directly across the river from burnside was a brick plaza with ledges, blocks, a whole street scene not quite SF embarcadero but close enough
I live in the pacific nw. Washington and i love this hits close to home
the helmet rocks! safety first kids
31:42 Omg its Wade Corley! That was one of my best friends. We lived together in Lincoln City lmao. Miss that gnarly dude
Awesome.
I love Ben Krahn. I always had his MM board when I could still skate.
And his critique of capitalism thrown in there? Hell yeah.
ironically capitalism is the only reason we are watching skate vids on youtube on our iphones. but yeah, solid point
@@fukdog yeah everyone thinks they did somethin spectacular with their cute little "you criticize capitalism and yet you live under capitalism; interesting" bit.
"You criticize feudalism, and yet you use the materials provided by your feudal lord; how peculiar..."
"You criticize slavery, and yet you do so from within the quarters provided by your master. How very strange..."
Lastly: I don't have a fucking iPhone.
I cant afford a fucking iPhone; and they're trash anyways. Planned obsolescence built in, to "stimulate the economy."
Fucking gross.
very nice.
I like that skate Area inside that factory, Pretty Damn Coooool.....
1 of the First Skateparks Ever built is up there in Vancouver, it looks like a Snake run built in 1977 ??
“I’m Jay Smay, I work with hay”
i hear Q
As a Portland native I can tell you that 2008 Portland was already a shadow of its former self, and it’s gone downhill since. Even the Portland from this doc no longer exists. Don’t expect to find it if you visit.
Yeah entire West coast is pretty much fucked. I used to want move there but not anymore.
2008 was the year of hype! I’m a native as well and the food got better but that’s it. The people got worse and don’t get me started on traffic. 😉
I think being 11 the summer of 2006 was the best most exciting time for me exploring Portland on my skateboard.
Lol I moved away in 09’, moved back in 2022 and realized that its still the city I always knew, I just had to stop being a little bitch
All you'll find in Portland is poop and but stuff 🤢🤢🤮
Good little art...modern folk.
🤘🏻
Dustin dollin in the bowl!
Can someone get definitive music listing for this? this whole doc is amazing but that music is delicious.
I agree
It's in the credits at the end
Blue Ninja thanks dude!
And unfortunately the reality is you got to start thinking about the future I sold drugs and just screwed around till I was 35 years old I tripped out on that every single day to all my friends all had good jobs and we're all excelling in life I was just dicking around.... every time I would think about it I would just get high and forget about it but that day comes where you wish you would have stepped up to the plate a little earlier in life,, I work for doordash and I'm 42 years old still trying to figure it out. I mean so you got to think about the future basically what I'm saying can't ignore it
Hank Plank like a 2X 4
what’s the song at the beginning?
What skate park is he skate from minute say 8 to 10? I'm a Portland kid.. I need to know.
@ 8:11 it's Newberg and then there are some burnside clips mixed in. Newberg has gotten a little rougher over the years but still one of the best in the area (in my opinion, haha)
Oregon Tri Fecta contest. 2008
Ben k is one of the best.
San Antonio
Portland was really sick in 2008. Bummer.
wonder when Maurice will msg duh
Red, Kent, Bones Hubbard, Tyrone Talbert, Eric Swanson, Danny Sargent, Adam Muzikant. This is the real crew.
I moved here in 2009. I wish I had seen this video, it would have hyped me up. Now, it just saddens me. I can’t romanticize grown men barely being able to string sentences together. But I will agree that THAT Portland is long gone.
Where's the last park?
Did you find out?
It was up by University of Portland, on the Willamette waterfront. There were a few derelict buildings that got turned into some DIY spots, and were torn down quite a few years ago.
What park is that at 9:50?
Newberg
PDX R.I.P. Burnside is the last thing standing that is worth a shit in this city.
Which is now sadly encased in a condominium building. I lived west of Portland from 1980 to 1999. I’ve heard it’s changed.
@@crujones4046 Burnside is still going strong, and it IS NOT encased in a condo, it's literally under Burnside street.
@@deadredeyesit kinda is tho

No one told you not to go get an education.
