Yamaha XT250 SM wheels 16t/45t sprocket highway test 🛣 🙂🏁

  • The new sprockets definitely have made the XT250 more highway friendly and hardtop oriented. It still displays a snappy torque in 1st gear to help take off and shifts easily and smoothly through all gears. I feel 4th and 5th gear are now the sweet spots. Top speed into a decent head wind was 73mph. The bike 'easily' cruises at 60-65mph sustained now and has no problem overtaking slow traffic. It was able to do so before, but now it feels as if the bike is working less to get you there and maintain a higher speed. I'm extremely pleased with the overall ride quality, comfort, and responsiveness. I will be posting a wrap up video and share final thoughts shortly.

Thanks for posting this speed test I'm looking forward to a video on the sprockets! All we XT250 owners want to have enough power to get up a hill off-road in first gear but we all agree a stock xt250 isn't quite fast enough on the freeway. (especially with my weight of 240 lbs)

If I were doing dirt I suspect I'd be missing the oem gearing. I've already seen a 16t video where they ended up switching back to the 15t due to poorer off-road performance on inclines. Probably will boil down to which you do more of. Nice to have the options though.

Seems to have better acceleration with the new wheels/tires and sprocket change. Thanks for posting -- very helpful info. I've looked into changing my sprockets as well since I don't really ride mine off road that much.

Thanks XT250rides 🙂! Definitely made acceleration quicker 🏁. I'm going to say its a worthy modification if your mostly hardtop. Plus I feel the bike could still traverse most off-road terrain. Maybe not as gracefully as oem set up, but surely will not be a slug. I think if one were to go with a more street oriented tire and change the sprockets it would be a positive outcome. Just making sure whichever tire you chose doesn't make the bike ride crappier as far as bounce or wobble goes. I say this because that happened to me on the 2020 I had when I tried this theory out using Avon Distanzias and then Pirelli MT60's. I even tried getting them trued and balanced. In the end I felt the oem Bridgestones were smoother. I was told the Avons were defective. No idea what the excuse was on the MT60's. Some folks commented saying they thought it might have been the tech doing the tire mounting. Not really sure though. I'm wondering if the oem rims large size in circumference just makes it odd when you try a more street oriented tire on it?

Sprocket size changes speedo reading. Do you have GPS speed indicator for your changes? Stock gearing reads 5mph faster than actual and 16 cs brings it closer to actual as that is Asian market gearing.

I just posted a video today that showed a Google map GPS reading and the speedo side by side. I do apologize for my rather caveman like technique of showing this. All I have are a couple of cell phones to video with plus I'm not very tech savvy. Wish I was though.

@Finding Neutral no problem at all. I dropped to 14t and know I must be about 10mph off indicated but try to stay off faster highways.

@Finding Neutral just saw your other video, I feel stooped! Kinda changed it to 4 speed transmission since 1st is REALLY low. But I wanted a bit stronger 2nd and 3rd gears for hilly gravel roads. Overall stock isn't bad compromise.

@@brentkellner5107 Good information there. Amazing what a huge difference those little sprocket changes make. Funny you mentioned feeling like you lost a gear... as mine now feels like I gained a gear. 4th kind of feels like 5th use to and 5th feels like a 6th. This bike's versatility is great 👍.

I just bought a used 2017 xt250 and found your channel. What is the single best add on or upgrade you have done, other than seat. What windshield do you have and would you buy it again.

Beings I basically only have hardtop to ride on I'd have to say my new SM wheels and sprockets are my favorite add on.
I have the Parabellum windscreen sold by Procycle. I also added a Puig extender to help cut down on the wind buffetting which was hitting me right in the face. I'm only 5'6 so this combo did the trick for me. If your a taller rider it might not.
I actually have bought and installed 2 of these screens as I had a 2020 XT250 I put one on (stupidly traded that bike for another, then had to buy another). If you look through my earlier videos you'll see it and I talk about my mounting process. I learned from that install 'do not over tighten the hardware'. I ended up creating fractures around the mounting holes doing that dumb move.
On my 2022 I made it a point to use more care. One thing I noted was the screen is only mounted to the cowling. The cowling isn't the sturdiest bit on the bike therefore at higher speeds the screen will tend to move forward and back some from the wind pushing it. I stuffed a piece of pipe insulation between mine to help cut down on this. So far so good. It will make the front leading edge of the screen kind of do a scraping effect on the front of the cowling though. Nothing earth shattering, just wanted you to be aware. Here are the links. Lastly, there's a business called 'Screens for Bikes' in Australia that makes custom windscreens. It was a close runner up selection wise. I'll include the link as well. Hope this information helps.

When you turned yours into a SM did you just order the OEM parts for the XT250X then install them? Webike has a XT250X Super Moto pictured on their site and if they don't have the OEM parts IMPEX JAPAN does.

@@findingneutral Thanks a lot. I ride mostly on road. I just purchased a 2008 with 6000 miles. It is in pristine condition. I believe it is completely original since the brake pads are almost completely spent and the tires on the bike had a 2007 date code. I put Shinko 241 trials tires on and they are very quiet and grippy on the pavement. I find myself switching between 4th and fifth between 35 and 45mph. I think I might try the 16 front sprocket first to see if that will let me stay in fourth gear cruising around town. Thanks again for responding.
