    I think the appeal of sepia has taken a battering over the last decade or so as every digital image of a dilapidated barn or abandoned piece of farm machinery demanded that the sepia filter be applied at maximum opacity ;-) However a thoughtful approach can give good results, particularly when used in less obvious situations (like the image of the lady).
    I'm enjoying your videos, especially your lets-have-a-crack-and-see-how-we-go attitude - too many youtubers seem to have forgotten that a lot of us are in this for the fun...

      Content Unaware Phil I think you're right. I said I'm not a fan of the sepia look, and to be honest I've only seen the digital versions. But I did enjoy playing with this toner and some of the prints turned out nice. And thanks for the compliment on the channel.

      I have the same feeling towards sepia, it's just overused these days

    Hi. I wasn't much of a sepia fan either, but after seeing the beach hut and train images, i think i'm going to have to have a dabble! It's obviously not something that will suit every image, but by making 2 prints each time i think it could work, at least i have the original b+w to fall back on..
    Thanks alot for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Your vids are really informative and i have learned so much from you!
    All the best my friend and keep those vids coming.. Please!! 😊👌

      Shoot Film Like a Boss - I guess it depends on the midtones as to how brown the broader image goes.

    Split toning with sepia is the bomb. Bleach just until you see the highlights start to be affected and then pull it out and wash. You can add warm tones and depth to the print while keeping the shadows black. You may need to dilute the bleach of it happens too quickly, depends on the paper.
    My routine is partial selenium toning first to hit the shadows. Then just a hint of split sepia in the highlights. I dilute the bleach 1:10 or 1:20 depending on the paper and discard after use.
    Also I use the smelly sulfide toner. Smells like rotten eggs.

  • @brett1354
    @brett1354 5 лет назад +1

    I don't know about the chemistry you used there, but you should be able to bleach theimage away almost entirelyand bring it back with selenium toning - which should give you another shot at adjusting the contrast.

    I remember the nit stuffs smell 🤣 got a shit ton of toner for £15 (older chap selling his entire dark room) and there’s a Paterson Acutone Sepia kit in there that I’m gonna try out.
    Like you, I’ve never really cared for Sepia look but let’s see what it can do!
    I’m probably gonna try it on the test strips first and see which dilution I like look of

  • @mamiyapress

    I Sepia Toned back in the days of " Rotten Eggs " but cotton wool was used to bleach the print completely ( almost gone ) and cotton wool again with toner to bring back the image. The train station photograph worked best in your selection.

    I'm not a fan of sepia toning too, but it was able to recover some highlights in all the prints. . Maybe a less intense toning would have been perfect.
    Inspirational as always! Thanks

    I used this kit for an image for my sister's 60th. I was pleased with the results for what it is, especially with my lungs. Though like yourself I’m not a massive sepia fan. But it was a rather old negative of her and my late mother and she has an image of our great grandparents and one of our grandparents on their wedding day so I was trying to match them. You can get the raw chemicals and Peter Elgar(?) has a great video how to do it. I do use farmers reducer and benzotriazole, but that’s as far as my dry chemicals go expect for developers like D-76. As always a superb video, and now my darkroom has been rejigged and more accessible I’m looking forward to getting back in there.

    I would like to mention that you can use this process on thin negatives I usually just do the toning after I have developed the negatives (I shoot 120 film) after fixing and washing the negs you pour the bleach into the tank agitate every min or so until the image has disappeared from the film (about3 or 4 min) pour out the bleach rinse a few times then add the toner for about 5 min then wash and dry as usual. I have heard this can be repeated several times. I shot a roll this week and made a mistake on the developer dilution and managed to rescue the whole roll, obviously if they are so thin with no shadow detail it will not help you there. The negatives will look brown but seem to print OK Hope this helps Kevin

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  5 лет назад

      Interesting thanks Kevin. Can you do this with older thin negs of you soak them first?

    • @kevinflynn6306
      @kevinflynn6306 5 лет назад

      Yes if you give them a good soak in water first, a little photo flo would help too. I would let them soak for at least 5 min or longer before you put them in the bleach. As I said I did a roll last week and saved them I would defiantly try them on a old roll first. The thing is if the negs are so thin they wont print very well what's the harm of trying this method before putting them in the bin, hope tis has been of some help regards Kevin @@ShootFilmLikeaBoss

    Granted I'm watching a computer screen here, but it does look like the toned prints have noticeably punchier contrast. Am I right?

  • @eherrmann01
    @eherrmann01 6 лет назад +1

    Thanks for the excellent video. I haven't tried toning yet but I have done a couple staining with coffee that I think came out pretty good. The only thing with that is that you have to mask off the borders. I've found that electrical tape works good for that. You should give it a go sometime, I'd like to see your results.

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  6 лет назад

      I have a video on that Eric. I got interesting results too and like you said taping the borders helps!

  • @autumnkraft
    @autumnkraft 6 лет назад +2

    Nice result!, Shame how long it lasts, I wonder if the Ilford one lasts longer? Would be interesting to see this difference between this and the "Vintage " toner that Fotospeed do. Keep the good videos up!

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah it's a cheaper toner but fun. I reckons Ilford toners have more mileage Hayden.

    This is going to be a silly question to you, but is the agitation really necessary? Just thought liquid will eventually soak the paper

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  4 года назад +1

      Not silly. I don't know the science behind it but I guess the agitation layers the chemicals over the paper evenly

      Selenium toner is very toxic, you should never let it contact your skin. It's absorbed into your body through the skin! Always handle toner with gloves on or tongs.

    You can also play around with different bleach dilutions. The more you dilute the less it bleaches the shadows and mid-tones, so you can then only tone the highlights and leave the shadows as they are. Here's a good video on that: ruclips.net/video/yUYcQQ13lRc/видео.html

    Prefer tea or coffee, more subtle result, none of the cost; chemicals arn't going to kill you either.
