@TheMrManoman Sweet! My compressor is a Paasche D900SR, and it came with a regulator and moisture trap. But not all compressors come with them unless stated.
@insanedaemon Yes. I've painted everything, motorcycles, cars, boats. I painted jets for 8 years while in the Navy. I just love to paint..... anything :)
@QuantemFear It's used just for thinning paint for airbrush use. I had problems thinning with water. The airbrush would spray weird. I went to some airbrush forums and they all said to use Windex, and for some magical reason, it solved all my problems lol.
You sir paint very .....differently......... to what im used to. But then again im not used to nicely painted figures now am I :). Nice job Bro love how you are very particular and how you take your time.
@Jedijim252 Model Air is made to be sprayed so it's thinner than the other vallejo paint lines and has smaller pigment, so no thinning is needed. But no matter what you spray through the airbrush, the good rule of thumb is it should be the consistency of skim milk. For brushing, I use the model air straight from the bottle.
Great video, I love slightly brighter models. I think most people paint crimson fists too dark for them to really pop on the tabletop, but your technique is in line with what I'm looking to do.. plus I just bought an airbrush so happy coincidence. Learned a lot in this video.
@Higzilla Never had the problem of detail being lost with my techniques. But I'm confused if your comment is correcting me on something or just a statement. Priming is NOT strictly for overall vibrance of the model but to create 'tooth' for the paint to grab on to. The vibrance thing having to do with paints being transparent and showing the primer is a side effect and not really a problem with airbrushing like we do here.
Well as I'm watching this I really think about painting 40k again, after 5 years of abstinence *g*. Thank you for the great inspiration and the awesome paintjob! Greets from Germany
@MascisMan1 Primer gives 'tooth' to the model so the rest of the paint sticks to it. Black was then applied to pre-shadow the model. The primer just happens to be grey.
@gretar00 should sound like constant air coming out. If it's pulsating its probably a compressor that's not good. Good ones will provide constant pressure without pulsing.
@ARodriguez258 Windex is used as a thinning medium for airbrushing only. When using a brush I use the classic mix of 1 part Liquitex flow aid and 10 parts distilled water pre-mixed in another bottle.
@Almightyshwa Depends. A space marine model takes about 30 minutes without a camera in front of my face. But an Ork Nob can take about an hour (it's my most hated model to paint due to the many textures sculpted in)
Yay! You're speaking in Vallejo colours! Yay! Also, nice vid, always looking awesome. Can't wait 'till your store opens, so many microbes and paints I want to buy. ;)
@Nolat885 You don't have to use the airbrush primer. I just use it because it is the smoothest I have ever used. Just prime the model with whatever and follow the steps after I prime. And if you prime black you can begin where I start with the blue.
@Higzilla Prime= because you always should. Black= so all the shadows are present. Blue= sprayed at a 45 angle so the black is still in the propper shadow areas.
Les, since you use model air quite a bit i figured you would possibly know why something strange happened. So I was painting a goblins spear with model air silver and went to use a GW black wash and as I applied the wash the silver came off like a film of plastic wrap or something.
@SNJ856 Sounds odd. I know when I use a wash over the silver and it's not completely dry it mixes and that's not good but I've never had the 'plastic wrap' problem.
@Dragonar2010 Thin the varnish with Windex just like the other paints. Good luck and when you finish, make a video and add it here as a response. Would be fantastic to see what people come up with after watching!
looks amazing Les, only thing that keeps it from being perfect is the perfect armor! Its to neat looking to my taste, need to battle damage ;). You keep amazing me with every video tho mate, keep up the great work! plz ;)
@DiSmEmBaR MY MIND!!! Mugwahahaha! Not sure what you mean honestly. The paint? Or how is the paint just appearing on the model? Answers 1. Grey Primer 2. Airbrush. :)
Very nice video. Thanks a lot for sharing. I really hope you would make a video about the two-brush technique at some point. It's the one painting technique I've never seen demonstrated on video anywhere on the web. I know a lot of people from the privateerpress-forums would love to see such a demonstration. :-)
@FearGFX It comes as part of the regular sprue when you buy a tactical squad. I've not seen anywhere that lets you buy them separately. You could check ebay, but expect to pay more than you'd like.
@kiwipile - I suppose that, like Hutchy said, the only real point in applying the primer is to make sure the base coat is more even. I don't think the primer's colour matters that much though (you put a basecoat over it anyway), he probably just used grey because it is a more neutral colour than black or white, so it has a smaller influence on how the other colours turn out.
@kiwipile Cps paint has an easier job clinging onto paint than it does plastic. It's just a precaution to keep the black basecoat from going all blotchy.
@LuMeistro Not really a gamer. I got into the hobby because of the paint side but I'm trying to change that. SMConsortium should be getting together every 2 weeks or so to do some 40k and Fantasy Bat Reps so it should be fun. I've played about 10 40k games when I had eldar and it was fun so.....
Another great video. Still learn something about painting every time I watch a video by you. How long does it generally take you to paint a model to that quality without having to mess with a camcorder?
thanks,it seems that they belong to the AoBR tactical squad but are not included in the normal tactical squad :( .However i just found out that there are two included in the 'Black Templars Chapter Upgrade' pack! yay
so very awesome, only question i have is why didn't you paint the bolter separate if the hands were gonna be red? just thinking that may have been easier
Great video, really awesome. Just got back into the hobby, and am planning on doing my chapter as Crimson Fists. Learning alot about painting from you and the guys at Rose City Mini's. I was curious about something. when you paint something like the chest eagle, or gloves, with really fine detail, how much do you dilute your paint to get a good surface flow? Cuz im learning that you pretty much have to dilute, or your paint is going to gum up your detail. Thanks Gunnvulcan
@lordmetroid For water acrylic paints I use nothing really. As long as you aren't using a hazardous liquid as a thinner. I only wear gloves in the videos to help the camera focus on the mini.
Les, Are you not diluting your paints anymore with Liquitex Flow Aid? There was very little mention of dillution, and when it was mentioned, it mentioned by using water. I've seen your technique evolve through your videos and I'm curious if your move to airbrushing has eliminated some of the stuff (like the use of Flow Aid) that can be seen in earlier videos.
wow man i really wanted u to make this video , thanks alot looks great , btw , can i use the same colors as in the black templars tutorial for raven guards?
Another great painting tutorial buddy...do you thin the air model gray when applying it by brush and if you do...Do you thin with windex or h20 and flow improver? just curious...seems the air color can still be used with brush, not sure it's cost is practical...Jim.
@andord123 I'm guessing because Vallejo does not make a black primer (that I'm aware of) in any of their color rangers. I suppose you could go with another company's paints, if you were so inclined, but I know that I like to stick w/ Vallejo as much as possible since I formulate my color recipes by the number of drops from their dropper bottles.
Cool stuff mate, but what kind of air-brush Is cheap, yet reliable? and more importantly, what kind of paints work best with said airbrush, I'm fine painting without one, but it really adds a nice, razzle-dazzle effect to vehicles, rust, etc.
Awesome man. just awesome. I hope I'll get to same level someday. Maybe...:) But I've got a question. Near the end of the video you used Grey primer from Model Air just with you brush? Is this even possible to prime whole model with this color just with a brush? I mean, it's made for an airbrush, but i don't have one, i paint only with brushes, but if it's possible to usel Model Air primer, it would be perfect!!
This is amazing work; I'm hoping to start into painting some miniatures soon, but I have zero artistic talent. Do you have any advice or suggestions to someone who is just beginning (as far as technique goes, not necessarily models)? Also, how long did just this one model take to paint? Thanks for the awesome tutorial.
Great tutorial as ever Les, can I just ask though, why use both a grey primer and a black undercoat? I don't understand the theory behind it, could you please explain, thanks.
GREAT job again the moddel looks great, you are the man.
Great new tips, I learn a new trick with everyone one of your tutorials.
Once again a top job. You make it seem so very effortless.
wow great video thanks man
another beauty of a model!!
OMG! Awesome!
Finally a new tutorial! I just would like to see you painting other stuff besides Space Marines.
as always.. Great job :)
Very nice work Les.
Excellent!
Incredible!
Another awesome vid, I'm really loving the innovative airbrush techniques, you're really giving me good cause to go out and pick one up!
Unbelievable job
amazing precision :)
@skellytinhood Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. It was a fun mini to paint.
Awsome paint job ;)
Amazing
@awesomepaintjob Cleaning and thinning in one go, awesome.
@washaway the airbrush is mentioned in the beginning. Its an Iwata HP-CS and the compressor is a Paasche D500SR.
Awesome work! Can't wait to see a tutorial for the Raven Guard
@TheMrManoman Sweet! My compressor is a Paasche D900SR, and it came with a regulator and moisture trap. But not all compressors come with them unless stated.

man pure coolness
@awesomepaintjob Thanks! I'll look into those. :)
nice paintings:D
@ARodriguez258 Windex is used as a thinning medium for airbrushing only. When using a brush I use the classic mix of 1 part Liquitex flow aid and 10 parts distilled water pre-mixed in another bottle.
@calebhargus MY HP-CS uses a .35 tip and Model Air is sprayed from the bottle, no dilution.
@Almightyshwa Depends. A space marine model takes about 30 minutes without a camera in front of my face. But an Ork Nob can take about an hour (it's my most hated model to paint due to the many textures sculpted in)

yeeeea this marine is a vet! :)
This makes me want to paint again
@Nolat885 You don't have to use the airbrush primer. I just use it because it is the smoothest I have ever used. Just prime the model with whatever and follow the steps after I prime. And if you prime black you can begin where I start with the blue.
@CptMonstruoso The vallejo inks are win :) They have an ink called Black Green. And their Brown ink is good as well.
@Higzilla Prime= because you always should. Black= so all the shadows are present. Blue= sprayed at a 45 angle so the black is still in the propper shadow areas.
@Phile700 The camera is in the credits. Its a Microsoft Lifecam Cinema.
i might try that gloss varnish technique to help shade my whites
@HueyOoeyKablooey LOD is on my list and I have a model for it. It's just a matter or when it's turn comes up.
great video les, lots of questions about the Airbrush thing but I'll ask them in a better time :D
answered all my question about aribrushing my imperial fists with this one video thank you.
except of course what airbrush your using and compressor.
Nice proton pack! :)
Les, since you use model air quite a bit i figured you would possibly know why something strange happened. So I was painting a goblins spear with model air silver and went to use a GW black wash and as I applied the wash the silver came off like a film of plastic wrap or something.
@Bluecloudandrew The brush size is not important. I use larger brushes than most people are comfortable. Just use what works for you.
@awesomepaintjob and that is why i will never be as good as you 1 hour..... what !!!
I take almost that long to base coat my minis lol
@SNJ856 Sounds odd. I know when I use a wash over the silver and it's not completely dry it mixes and that's not good but I've never had the 'plastic wrap' problem.
@rabk294 That cup has magical powers. That's why the tips of my brush don't curve :)
@Dragonar2010 Thin the varnish with Windex just like the other paints. Good luck and when you finish, make a video and add it here as a response. Would be fantastic to see what people come up with after watching!
@koora8 They are both black schemes if I remember so yeah :)
nice painting booth
@lordmetroid Thanks!!!
@MrShodan91 This is my tabletop standard.
three questions about your airbrush: 1: what model is it? 2:where did you get it? 3: how much does it cost?
woot its been so long :)
looks amazing Les, only thing that keeps it from being perfect is the perfect armor! Its to neat looking to my taste, need to battle damage ;).
You keep amazing me with every video tho mate, keep up the great work! plz ;)

@kiwipile

@awesomepaintjob thanks alot , i think the raven guard black not shiney but ill follow the tutorial anyways :D
Is there anyway to just get this type of helmet separately to put them on the space marines. I am loving it so much.
Another great video. Still learn something about painting every time I watch a video by you. How long does it generally take you to paint a model to that quality without having to mess with a camcorder?

i was wondering when you would do this one
so very awesome, only question i have is why didn't you paint the bolter separate if the hands were gonna be red? just thinking that may have been easier
@sonikdude49 yeah it has been the most requested lately.
@thomasbhunter68 Who said it took all day?

@awesomepaintjob Sorry it's a Paasche D500SR not 900
@aldi2500 mine says 005 on the cap.
I was wondering if you have or will in the near future be doing a Grey Knights video.
@lordmetroid For water acrylic paints I use nothing really. As long as you aren't using a hazardous liquid as a thinner. I only wear gloves in the videos to help the camera focus on the mini.
@awesomepaintjob excellent, was suspicious I was going at it too high, which indeed I was
@meanmachine63 it's a song I made called "APJam".

@SniperBlueWolf ??
@TheRavenum Tha airbrush he uses is an Iwata HP-CS

@ieuanm between 15-20 psi
Great tutorial as ever Les, can I just ask though, why use both a grey primer and a black undercoat? I don't understand the theory behind it, could you please explain, thanks.
@Yitick about 30 minutes for a space marine, an hour for an Ork Nob.
@TabrisQuendi lol about 97 more SM tutorials and we'll be done with it :) But I throw in the random tutorial now and then.
Very cool. I am curious as to Y you add windex? is this too all the paints or just the ones you spray on?
@PaintwithTrash he's doing about 100 chapters as his main project
Run DMC ftw!
