Thanks Emil. This was a very comprehensive and informative video. One thing I might mention is that if you’re using any paint or ink in your airbrush you should use a mask or respirator. Even non toxic paints and inks can affect your respiratory system if inhaled. Especially if you have asthma or some other respiratory issue. I can attest to this first hand because I have respiratory failure. My lungs cannot absorb oxygen as well as normal or get rid of carbon dioxide. I got this because of particulate exposure. Trust me when I say you don’t want to mess with your respiratory system. Always use protection when dealing with fine particulates.
@@hav6301 I would recommend you use a respirator, one that has a carbon filter rated for chemical exposure. Normal face masks won’t protect against very small particles or gasses. Everytime you use glue, epoxy, cleaning chemicals or anything else that’s toxic you should wear it. If you 3D print with resin you should wear a respirator while handling resin. These particulates will build up in your lungs over time and destroy the lining of your lungs and your alveolar sacs slowly suffocating you. Also if you smoke consider giving up. I smoked for many years and it has not helped my health.
I agree, using a mask is best practice when atomizing anything in the air. I doubt you’ll get sick immediately, but years of airbrush use even with just acrylic paint could be detrimental to your health.
I got my HS Evolution about 15 years ago and I'm still using it. My husband got an HS Infinity last year. It's really a testament to the quality and design of the HS airbrushes that they're still going strong. My only real regret is spending several years learning how to use the airbrush myself because we didn't have these resources back then.
Stumbled upon this while trying to learn how to airbrush custom sneakers. First…great information. Definitely gonna come in handy. Second…I didn’t know I was a fan of miniatures until I saw this. AMAZING WORK!!!!!! I think I’ve found something new to get into that my wife can complain about😂😂

21:00 - Mixing paint. The best advice I have seen (especially for a beginner) is to mix outside the cup in a clean container until you know what you are doing (so you don't damage your airbrush) and the mix should be thin enough that when you drag it up the side of your container it flows back down the side straight away. It shouldn't sit on the side in a droplet. Use a brush or whatever you are using to mix with, coat it with the mixed thined paint and touch the side of your container briefly. If it runs straight down the side then you are good to go. If it sits there in a droplet, it could use a little more thinner. Also, not sure if you mention it, but there are some good recipes out there for thinner and cleaner that are waaaaaay cheaper and worth looking at if you want an airbrush without spending tons.
"there are some good recipes out there for thinner and cleaner that are waaaaaay cheaper and worth looking at if you want an airbrush without spending tons." This is only recommended if you are a highly trained Chemist who knows that they are doing.. Consider all the other equipment you will need for brewing these concoctions.... The cost would be greater than ready made thinners & cleaners.

I decided to get back on the horse this week and watched a few vids, read a few articles and they didn't really encourage me, but watching this answered so many of my questions. great stuff

I think I’ll get the airbrush back out and try them. (Haven’t used it in 30 years) Thanks for the inspiration.
I've been through a few cheap $100 - $250 compressors since I've started in the hobby a few years ago. I bought a IS.875HT Smart Jet Plus Tubular Studio Compressor. This thing is amazing. It's not too loud. Is small, compact and never misses a beat. Not cheap, but not too expensive. Highly recommend it.
The ones I found in German online shops were over 500€ lol That is close to an order of magnitude more expensive then the unbranded AS-186 recommended in the video
It has been 48 years since I painted a model, I recently started making models again. Painting is something I have to learn again, including air brushing. So I bought an ultra 2024. Hopefully painting will become a bit easier. Thanks for this video.
Very useful video. Getting a very cheap brush first is a big mistake as you never know if you are doing something wrong or if it is the brush. An Ultra is an ideal beginner brush as the seals won't degrade if you use anything other than water based. The Evo is great - love it. Have a few cheap brushes for specific jobs like gloss or metallic paints.
Just pulled the trigger on getting my first starter airbrush! This video was absolutely perfect, and the download for the airbrush practice sheet is awesome 🙏
Love to see airbrush guides even though I have been using one for a while. Things as small as “make sure you put thinner into the airbrush prior to paint” will save you headache and troubleshooting
i got the squidmar ultra 2024 just about when you announced it, cant wait to get my first airbrush especially one thats a special edition from one of my fav youtubers
Very comprehensive video for beginners, thank you! Complete newb here with zero airbrush experience but about to receive a gift of a new set...yikes! Watching this has taken away a bit of the mystery. Thanks also for including 🇨🇦 Amazon links😊
This clear and informative presentation is a perfect introduction to the many aspects of equipment choice, handling, and effective use of a modeller's airbrush. I'm new to the airbrushing experience, and it helped me no end by confirming / correcting the choices I was about to make. Many thanks.
Great video, clear, simple, honest, well structured, neat looking, nice edited, no extra crap, just what I needed. Kept me interested from start to end. As a beginner, I really apreciate this sort of content, thank you.
Great video. Only gripe is that I would always recommend using mask when the paint is atomized like airbrushing and spraycan painting. There are small particles you can breath in.
This is the week I try my airbrush for the first time. Excited and nervous. Watched this and your previous airbrush vid several times lol. Thanks so much for doing this!
@@Meuchlor Hope yours turned out well, seems the regulator on my compressor was broken....but the company is sending me a replacement! so.. we'll try again next week!
Just bought my first compressor for my old airbrush I had laying around (Hansa 281) because of your video and I will finally start to use it. Great video! Informative and I will watch more then once to learn more.
I just placed an order for your new Evolution 2024 Black Edition. I loved the previous model, I use it for 90% of my airbrushing. I'm excited to get the new one, and I won't be leaving this one submerged in water with another airbrush for weeks while I'm away from home (it was me who had to get a replacement trigger from H&S when my trigger fizzed away due to dissimilar metal corrosion 😖). Advice: don't leave good airbrushes submerged in water for weeks 😖🤦🏼♂️
This is a wonderful video, thank you so much for being so thorough. Even as an experienced painter I was intimidated by airbrushing, now I want to try it!
Best video for me in a long time , watched you for a bit. But have not been thrilled as lately but seeing the real you made a difference. Made me fill like when I first started watching to learn and it reminds me of why I should be having fun most of all
I've been airbrushing for a while just to base coat, this helped me understand what the right cleaning process is.... I had been fully stripping every time I painted.
I would love a written list of the airbrushes and their price tiers. I think it's the only thing this guide leaves me wanting. I'm leaning towards the H&S Ultra 2024, but the way the video is laid out it's hard to compare.
If its your first brush learn with a cheap one, so when you make mistakes and it breaks you can just bin it, and get another. On the big brands just a replacement needle can run more then a cheap brush. That beginner H&S brush looks fantastic tho
@@Mrwigglyauthis video convinced me to get that one. I've had a run at airbrush before and my problem was always getting all the variables straight. With the limiter I think that will be the guide wheels I was missing.
@@Argosh 100% i have a couple years of AB experience now, and i would have hated starting with an expensive brush, the cheap throw away ones are great for basics, and i went through 2 before i knew my full way around them and how to clean them properly without breaking them, so if i had buggered a $150+ brush rather then my 10$ one i would have been really upset. But the featured in the beginner H&S for me specifically while im not a complete beginner i do have physical limitations with my hands that having the adjuster and the guide for putting the needle back in would be great for me.
Tack för en mycket informativ video! Har velat ta nästa steg och skaffa en airbrush men inte vetat vart jag ska börja! Håller på att kolla efter en kompressor nu!
Excellent video. I will be upgrading my cheap entry level airbrush to that of the Harder & Steenbeck Ultra 2024 beginner airbrush. Order placed! Also went ahead and ordered the quick disconnect adapters. Can't believe I waited this long to get those.
Thanks for this video! I just got my first airbrush as a Christmas gift, the new H&S Ultra. I’m excited to try it out, but I will take it apart and get familiar first!
I nearly gave up on airbrushing after having bought a cheaper $50 range airbrush two years ago, but I was essentially fighting the tool and hating the experience. I recently bought the basic Ultra instead of the squidmar version, (unfortunately the project I needed it for had to be finished last week, so I couldn't wait until these got delivered). Still, I am not disappointed for giving it another try, and genuinely recommend these for anyone who, like me, is just starting out.
Next time chapters are numbered not lettered but great VOD. Will be getting a squidmar airbrush. My level has increased because your instruction! Thank You!
Just snagged your 2024 Black Edition Evo, it should go along quite nicely with your 2024 Black Ultra :). Hopefully I'll get a shipping notification for that soon. I have a holiday army project calling my name!
Great video, rather wonderful. I’d give you a thousand praises, but I’ll say a simple thank you very much, very instructive, interesting and entertaining.
Perfect Timing releasing this vid, as I'm waiting for my Ultra24 Squidmar to arrive, my 1st airbrush 😊 So Im learning a lot from and get answers to all my questions from this vid! Thank you Emil for that and all the other content you provided to the mini painting community, prooving your high rank on YT is well deserved ❤
Really good video! For someone who gets overwhelmed with information easily, this was really easy to digest. It might be an idea to add some links to alternative items. For example, the compressor isn't available on the UK Amazon store at the moment and everwhere else seems to be charging a higher price.
A shop compressor with a tank works great. It is loud if running but if you fill up the tank early you won't need to run the pump at all as the amount of air in the tank will last all night. The quick connects for the hose are a must.
I’ve ordered both version on your airbrush. I have the Giraldez and both of the cult of paint variants as well. I love that H&S is doing collaborations with mini painters, I’ll buy them all just so that we keep getting more in the future haha. Gutted I missed out on the Squidmar ultra though :( keep up the good work guys!
thanks bud amazing detail tutorial lots of food for thought. gona get on with some painting and download that practice sheet you designed. as a beginer i feel ready to go amzing stuff
Iwata Eclipse Takumi hp-sbs or the Eclipse hp-cs and you are done !! Best atomization. Best trigger response. Best trigger accuracy. Best feel. Most durable needle design. Easiest to clean, and gets very fine detail when paints are properly reduced for detail. The H&S is also good but the needle can be bent easily in comparison for a beginner.
Hi, I have the Fengda FD 186 compressor. It gets very hot during operation. Was it the same with yours? Thank you for this great video! Greetings from Germany
I got myself one of the black Evolutions, but ordered it too late to get by Christmas. Oh well, I'll have a gift for myself in the New Year XD. I'm excited to get started with airbrushing!
I think one thing worth mentioning when using water for thinning and cleaning is to use distilled water esp if you are using superfine nozzles and your local tapwater is rather hard! another is to sometimes check local cosmetic/health supply sections and stores. Nailart, makeup, dental etc they sometimes have really small applicators like brushes and teenytiny q-tips, ipa, finger-gloves, acupuncture needles etc (and resinrelated sculpting supplies…)

Use make-up sponges to clean your airbrush verse Q-tips. I've never had anything leftover, and you can get q-tip sizes make-up sponges. I do have an ultra sonic, but it's rare if I need to drop it into that, I use it for cleaning up paint from previous owners of said model. Regardless amazing tips, and I will be pointing many to this video!! Awesome job!
I’m such a fan of this channel based off of this video. Alas, the no name compressors regulator didn’t work so I’m waiting on a replacement, but this video has helped me breach into airbrushing.
This was super helpful as someone new to both airbrushing and painting minis in general! It was so nice to see the "why" behind every tip i was given on using an airbrush. Is there any chance you could make a video comparing some different brands or tiers of air brush? That'd make it a lot easier to justify buying a $280 air brush haha.
Great video guys, just what I needed awaiting my first kit with a H&S ultra. Looking forward to starting out with some of Mantic's resin alien trees and blending some avatar type colours.
Dang, your minis look nice. I'm used to the heavily dry-brushed look from GW, but seeing what you can do with an airbrush is mindblowing. I've been painting off and on for years, but have way more unpainted than painted, because it's slow, I don't make time for it, and I'm not very good (and yet perfectionist; a frustrating combination). But watching this, I'm wondering if maybe airbrushing would help me. I was mostly considering it for priming, but you get amazing results for regular painting too. I still don't know which one to get, though. That H&S Ultra you recommend for beginners is still over €100, and that's without a compressor. Maybe I'll get a €50 piece of crap first and try some priming for before I move up.
I was intimidated when starting airbrush, mostly with maintenance. But I haven’t had an issues with clogs or any other nonsense, just a good 1-2 minute process of clearing it for the next paint
first airbrush (and presently only one for the moment) I got was a cheap one with an air compressor like the one showed in this vid. think I paid $70 for it? maybe less. Anyways, only thing I've used it for so far is base coating, but good lord was that enough for me as a start. I had been painting my T'au by hand, and it was alright for a bit, but it is tedious work at times. I got my airbrush and did a comparison of base coating two crisis suits, one with the airbrush, one by hand. Night and day difference. I finished two crisis suits in under half the time it took me to hand coat the first, and it applied so much smoother. No bush strokes anywhere (obviously) and it got into all the little spaces that takes me time and patience to do by hand without ruining a brush or needing to squeeze my brush into odd angles. looking into ways to do the second layer or possibly do glow effects, and yea, I know I'm using the low end of tools and will have to work harder to get good results, but I can already tell that even with lower ends tools I'm still saving myself a ton of time and opening new options that I either couldn't do, or would need to put far more effort into obtaining with a standard brush set. Also, not on a miniatures note, great for terrain that requires a little less finesse for (most) of it.
thx for this video, i have a small budget so i brought a cheap one for the base colors and for vehicle too. i will train then invest in a better one after. it help me a lot to understand and not make any mistakes a the beginning
Watching this for a second time. I have the older version of the Ultra and I've been considering bumping up to a nicer Harder and Steenbeck airbrush. Maybe soon.
Part way through watching now, dipping my toe in the water and expecting my first airbrush later today. I did go for an all in one style you featured, but it's mainly for basecoats and weathering on my model train layout, I might try my hand at some point with rc car shells but think I may have to buy a more expensive one at that point.
Thanks for the video it did help me understand what the other was trying to tell me. Image = 10 000 words they say. I have 1 question, would you use acrylic paint with metallic particules inside (kind of colored paint with metallic effect) in a air brush? I would fear the particules would block the airbrush. Thanks

I love that you put in the work to make a beginner airbrush. This is the airbrush ever pro and beginner wish that they had!
7:26 did you find this one?
I would love a written list of the airbrushes and their price tiers. I think it's the only thing this guide leaves me wanting. I'm leaning towards the H&S Ultra 2024, but the way the video is laid out it's hard to compare.
Thanks for the feedback. Well make some updates to the video description next week
@SquidmarMiniatures 7:26 id love to see this product deal on your sponsored sites.
This has been immensely helpful! Thank you so much for helping me getting into airbrushing.
Tack för en mycket informativ video! Har velat ta nästa steg och skaffa en airbrush men inte vetat vart jag ska börja! Håller på att kolla efter en kompressor nu!
Just ordered my second Squidmar Airbrush, can't wait to use them :)
Thank you Aaron!
I've been using my Airbrush for like a year now and this video is GREAT!
Excellent video. I will be upgrading my cheap entry level airbrush to that of the Harder & Steenbeck Ultra 2024 beginner airbrush. Order placed! Also went ahead and ordered the quick disconnect adapters. Can't believe I waited this long to get those.
The perfect video at the perfect timing. I just got a cheap/medium airbrush to prsctice and initiate my journey. Great video!
Never buy cheap painting tools.
Thanks for sharing that! Really happy that it's doing what we designed it for, for you!
Great video. I've watched it multiple times. I just ordered a Harder and Steenbeck 2024 Ultra. I'm pretty excited about it.
Same I hope it ships soon
I could only afford the stand for now. 😮
This impressive guide convinced me to go for it and buy a set.
Ordered my squidmar ultra a while ago… can’t wait for it to arrive
Any time now :D about 50% are shipped out already
Thank you for this video. I have been having much trouble with my air pressure setting. Your explanation certainly makes sense.
Awesome video!!😍
Bought the chrome one yesterday.
So excited to get started!🔥
Great video, rather wonderful. I’d give you a thousand praises, but I’ll say a simple thank you very much, very instructive, interesting and entertaining.
Perfect Timing releasing this vid, as I'm waiting for my Ultra24 Squidmar to arrive, my 1st airbrush 😊
So Im learning a lot from and get answers to all my questions from this vid!
Thank you Emil for that and all the other content you provided to the mini painting community, prooving your high rank on YT is well deserved ❤
7:26 does it actually have the adjustable dial ad shown?
It does, mine just came in yesterday! Excited to get started with it@@gmsisd
@@gmsisd yes
Really good video!
For someone who gets overwhelmed with information easily, this was really easy to digest.
It might be an idea to add some links to alternative items. For example, the compressor isn't available on the UK Amazon store at the moment and everwhere else seems to be charging a higher price.
I just bought the ultra as my first airbrush and this video is a massive help. Thank you
Those Squidmars are absolutely *GORGEOUS!* Once I get the hang of things with a cheaper airbrush I definitely want to invest in one of those beauties
A shop compressor with a tank works great. It is loud if running but if you fill up the tank early you won't need to run the pump at all as the amount of air in the tank will last all night. The quick connects for the hose are a must.
I just got my first air brush based off your videos, I can’t wait to start using
This has to be the best airbrush guide I've seen, the previous best being Emil's guide from a few years ago. Thank you 🙂
Awesome video! Thank you it's just what I needed to watch before I attempt my first ever attempt to airbrushing.
Great video! I’m at the point where I’m about to make the leap and add an airbrush to my arsenal. Very informative 👍
This is exactly why I am a Patreon. Fantastic video, great summary, good tips, just awesome. Thanks Squidmar team!
7:26 still looking for this product? Any idea where to find it?
This video was so helpful i personally carve fishing lures and your tips have been super!!!
Very informative video!! 👍👍 Thanks for sharing this with us newbies. 😊
Great video and I like the music in your edits.....funky/soul! Great!
How similar is that to the gold one they have branded with the tentacles
I think one thing worth mentioning when using water for thinning and cleaning is to use distilled water esp if you are using superfine nozzles and your local tapwater is rather hard!
another is to sometimes check local cosmetic/health supply sections and stores. Nailart, makeup, dental etc they sometimes have really small applicators like brushes and teenytiny q-tips, ipa, finger-gloves, acupuncture needles etc (and resinrelated sculpting supplies…)
Perhaps against my better (financial) judgement, I ordered your airbrush. Excited to try it out!
Rip wallet haha! But i'm sure you're gonna love it, it's such a great tool!

The hero we need.
This needs to be pined.
Thank you @graefx ! Hero Material! I put it in the description so everyone can enjoy your Timestamps.
Will watch this whilst cleaning my airbrush which ive had a few weeks. Good timing!
Thanks for the super informative video. Just ordered my squidmar evolution and can't wait to try it out
This was super helpful as someone new to both airbrushing and painting minis in general! It was so nice to see the "why" behind every tip i was given on using an airbrush. Is there any chance you could make a video comparing some different brands or tiers of air brush? That'd make it a lot easier to justify buying a $280 air brush haha.
handy video. considering one of those rechargeable airbrushes just for priming/ zenithal. seem convenient and budget friendly
Maybe I'll get a €50 piece of crap first and try some priming for before I move up.
just bought the ultra last week, perfect timing!
You're gonna be pumped about it when it comes!
Im going to finally make the plunge, but i really like the way using brushes feel. Unlike most YT painters I actually like base coating lol.
Also, not on a miniatures note, great for terrain that requires a little less finesse for (most) of it.
excellent video! i've added it to my favorites! starting of with airbrushing now since i 'm making props ect with 3dprinting
Great video, ive been using my awata just to prime and feel this will help me make the next step in my airbrush journey, thanks
Great video! A simple thing for people to add to a shopping list would be if painting white, get a bottle of white acrylic ink.
thx for this video, i have a small budget so i brought a cheap one for the base colors and for vehicle too. i will train then invest in a better one after. it help me a lot to understand and not make any mistakes a the beginning
Watching this for a second time. I have the older version of the Ultra and I've been considering bumping up to a nicer Harder and Steenbeck airbrush. Maybe soon.
Can you please compare different models? I do not uderstand what is differen between Ultra, Evolution, Infinity etc... Thanks. And great video!
Part way through watching now, dipping my toe in the water and expecting my first airbrush later today. I did go for an all in one style you featured, but it's mainly for basecoats and weathering on my model train layout, I might try my hand at some point with rc car shells but think I may have to buy a more expensive one at that point.
This is a wildly helpful video. Thank you.
Thanks for the great video! Looking forward to trying out my H & S Ultra when it gets here!
Thanks for the video it did help me understand what the other was trying to tell me.
Image = 10 000 words they say.
I have 1 question, would you use acrylic paint with metallic particules inside (kind of colored paint with metallic effect) in a air brush? I would fear the particules would block the airbrush.
Thanks
