    The most loved Chick Corea guitarist ever. He was more impressed with Frank’s playing than even Al Di Meola. I think because Frank’s approach is that of a keyboardist. Those lines are a keyboardists soloing style.

    I can't believe how long it took me to actually discover and start listening to Frank Gambale. I'm 55 years old, and I only last year started checking this guy out.
    He's AMAZING! Frank is the only guy I would put up there with Guthrie Gowan.

      Frank is much older than Guthrie n always had a very identifiable style... If you check Frank's history he is incomparable to any other musician... Guitar is but one of his strengths...lately philosophy is featuring 😅

    Stunning. Franks playing is always amazing, as clearly shown here. But the tone is killer! I really dig how Franks tone has that high end smoothness, but clarity in the low. And the midrange is so vocal.

    This was the year Chick played my portrait at the Avalon Theater in Easton, MD on my birthday. I went backstage and asked him how this RTF tour was going. I didn't know at that time that the guitarist from my favorite Corea band was playing in this incarnation of RTF, but I thanked him that evening not only for my portrait; I thanked him for the TO THE STARS Elektric Band album. BTW, if you want to know which portrait is mine, it's the one on Chick's Piano Portraits album that starts with my name in Corean: "STEVE ... BER TI NO". I can explain every note. Chick was an unmitigated musical genius.

      but unlike holdsworth frank can actually play changes and be convincing in a huge range of styles instead of just endless modal jams like holdsworth.

    • @RocknJazzer
      @RocknJazzer 3 месяца назад +1

      @@axeman2638 You must be thinking of dimeola, as he is more the modal pattern player than Allan. Frank is not aping Allan, they all do not sound the same, and both can solo over advanced changes, frank's more bebop styled, Allan's more alien. Allan can and has played over very hard avant changes and chords of his own making far beyond modal and bop, you must have last heard him in the 70s or something. His 80s and 90s albums onwards were pretty out there, more along the lines of coltrane's sheets of sound and then some, with avant outside substitutions that flowed over crazy chords and changes in milliseconds making the changes on the fly beyond just modal pattern playing

      @@RocknJazzer From a technical perspective there is no doubt Holdsworth was in a class of his own, I mean who else has hands like that? But myself I haven't heard anything from him that makes me want to listen to it again let alone a tune that sticks in my head enough for me to hum or whistle it.
      Tonality is a fact of physical reality, not a cultural construct, attempts to deny it inevitably sound tuneless and chaotic.
      Messian modes are a denial of tonality.
      Great for creating tension for sure, but must resolve back to tonality to be musical.
