2019 Chevrolet Traverse - how to retract the electronic parking brake without using a scan tool

  • Great and simple How-to - This works for all GM (Chevy, Buick, Cadillac, GMC, etc) electronic parking brakes, as well as most Ford and other manufacturers. This is on my wife’s 2019 Traverse, but is the same for the most part on all of them.
Also a huge shout out to our friends Don Geary and Donnie Minut Jr at PowerStop Brakes!

Great video!! I’m about to do this on my wife’s ‘18 GMC Acadia. I really appreciate that you have clear instructions on what to do AND the sizes you were using. It saves some guess work and knowing if you have these tools/sizes before starting the job and needing to run up to the parts store “again”. Cheers!!

Thank you so much for posting this! I was replacing pads and rotors on my 2018 Chevrolet Traverse and didn’t understand the electronic brake mechanism on the rear. We were pushing on the piston with a c clamp and nothing was happening. Grabbed the position rotating tool and still wasn’t working. I followed this and kept screwing until the piston retracted. We were able to do it without pulling the “red clip” off first.

Try this method, works with Silverado trucks. With the ignition off press the brake pedal and then press parking brake button for 10 seconds, release brake pedal and button then press quickly press the parking brake button once again and brake should make a sound as the piston goes in. To cancel after finished, turn on ignition, step on the brake and press parking brake for 5 seconds. That's it.

I used a scan tool to retract the rear electronic brakes. I was able to push the piston back with just a c-clamp. Every video shows you having to use a brake piston turning tool. If i would have known this method i could have saved some money.

Good video! I did a rear brake job on a 2013 Audi A4 and used a battery with a wire connected to the positive terminal, and a wire connected to the negative terminal. I touched one wire to the brake caliper motor pin and the other to the second pin. It retracted the caliper. Then, to put it back I reversed polarity. Was wondering if that would work on the Chevy. Also, do you need to disconnect the negative battery terminal to do this job. Thanks and keep up the great work!

A little comber-some having to turn it little by little but it works and no special tool or extra steps required.
