    Magic: The Gathering is played by having cards in your hand. You get an additional card at the beginning of each turn. A "top deck" is basically when you draw a card that you needed. Since a deck will normally consist of 60 cards before play begins (53 after the hand is drawn) the chances of a useful "top deck" are quite slim. In this game, he basically had to draw the one card in his deck that could save him, or lose.
    Needless to say, he drew the card, won and went on to win a lot of money.

This threw away (I believe) all his other outs to his opponent's next attack in exchange for a single out that would be burn for lethal. I've seen people Char too often without counting the cost of the 2 life, but in this case it was utterly crucial.

    For anyone else wondering what exactly happened, I looked up the cards so I can explain it a little better:
    - Craig starts his turn with no cards in hand and 6 life left. He draws "Char," a 3 mana red instant that does "4 damage to any target and 2 damage to [himself]." He then passes the turn.
    - Oliver starts his turn with 7 life and spends the turn sacrificing little guys to destroy Craig's blockers, then deals 3 damage in attacks, leaving Craig at 3 life!
    Here's the big play:
    - On Oliver's endstep, Craig casts his char to burn Oliver down to 3 life, widdling himself down to 1 life in the process.
    - Criag then starts his turn and draws "Lightning Helix" off the top of his library, a spell that does "3 damage to any target, [Craig] gains 3 life." Since Oliver had exactly 3 life and no answers, it was finished.
    What an incredible pair of top decked cards!

    Makihito Mihara over Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa in 2006 Magic Worlds was even better...
    Playing a Dragonstorm Deck vs. Boros Deck Wins, tied 2-2, down to 12 life points and potentially facing death next turn, Makihito started his Storm counting, to set the winner Dragonstorm, but when he realizes that he misscounted the mana for the win, after thinking a lot, Makihito 'Repeal's the Savannah Lions and draw a Rite of Flame that set the combo for the win.

    To a certain extent you are right, he did have another 2 char's in deck (I think he'd played 2) as well as another 3 helix's on top of this one.
    It's simply how tense the whole game was, everyone was "holding serve" and Oli had worked out whoever played first won. It ended up being that way for the match, but after a tense match, he had maybe 6 in 45 cards that would win, and he hadn't seen a Helix all match.

    • @TheRoleplayer40k

      Helix was the only card he could get to win
      That char put him on one health so he couldn’t cast another char if he drew one (deal 4 damage to an enemy and two to yourself)
      Helix was his only out

    • @beastmonsterthing3

      lanman saksajskjd he only had one card in hand, a card that deals damage to a player, and he would have lost if he hadn't drawn another damage spell to finish him off, so it was total luck. if he had drawn any other card he'd have lost

    • @ColorOfSakura
      @ColorOfSakura 9 лет назад +35

      +lanman saksajskjd Basically the play was this, he played a card called "Char" which dealt 4 damage to his opponent (who had 7 life, taking him to 3 life). He had no cards in his hand, so his only way to win was to pull something from the top of his deck that would deal three damage to his opponent.
      The card he drew was Lightning Helix, which deals 3 damage to an opponent and lets you gain 3 life. The life gain didn't matter, since it means that he takes his opponent to 0 life, which wins him the game.

    • @SyaoLin213
      @SyaoLin213 8 лет назад +31

      +KingZora13 It wasn't technically total luck because he could've made the mistake of using Char on his opponent's creature the previous turn and made the topdeck not matter, and almost anyone would've fired Char off at the creature while he didn't.

    At the end of Ruel's turn, Craig casts "Char", an instant that deals 4 damage to Ruel and 2 damage to Craig, bringing Ruel's life total down to 3 and Craig's to 1. The rest is history. =)

    @ElgartheWise exactly. Jones was executing a long-shot plan that involved not only correctly using current resources, but gambling that his deck would provide other resources later (the topdecked Helix) without which the plan not only would fail, but (due to the 2 damage from Char) actually made it more likely he would die sooner. It was a sheer no-guts no-glory play and 9 times out of 10 such a thing won't pay off.
