  • We took full advantage of a flight of four Idaho Air National Guard A-10s returning to Gowen Field when we were photographing with a Sony a6700 camera using a classic Minolta Maxxum 500 millimeter autofocus lens.
As the jets approached and spaced themselves for landing, high speed burst mode gave us plenty of frames to use in this production.
On a few images, we tried an amazing tool we purchased from Topaz. It is Topaz DeNoise AI, and used judiciously it can clean up images that have digital noise in shadow areas, while adding some sharpening as well. We labeled the pictures in this production where Topaz DeNoise was used on top of other image enhancing software.
Take a look especially at the small blue 25-pound BDU-33 practice bomb visible on the shackle of a returning A-10 as it lands. This imagery was made possible by a combination of the Sony a6700 camera with the long-reaching Minolta Maxxum 500 millimeter mirror lens, which gives an effective reach of 750 millimeters when used on this camera with a Sony LA-EA5 lens adapter.
We're still experimenting with this setup, and we note the number of sharp images goes up dramatically with higher shutter speeds, sometimes as high as 1/2000th of a second. Results obtained by other photographers may vary.

Nice shots! If you happen to catch tail # 218, it’s the only Idaho ANG A10 with any sort of special tail, it’s dedicated to the Maintenance Group Commander.

I love those A-10s. Have they decided on when they are going to retire the A-10 from the Idaho Guard?
Excellent editing skills. That AI stuff can do amazing things. Also, they can do some awful stuff as well.

The Air Force says F-16s are "expected" to start arriving in early 2027, with A-10s retiring in 2026. Will be interesting to see if it comes to pass.
