  • Poet and essayist Mati Shemoelof lives in Berlin since 2011. He is israeli, jewish and arab at the same time. His ancestors are from Iraq and had to flee to Israel. Shemoelof grew up in Haifa and lived for many years in Tel Aviv. Seaching for equity he published poems and articles on the misrachi jewish and israeli palestinian issue. Because on the ongoing tensions he moved to Berlin where he founded a german israeli family. The situation of his 6 year old daughter made him write a long essay which was published in Berliner Zeitung. In this interview I talk with Mati Shemoelof about his experience as a father, his friendship with palestinian expats in Berlin and his vision for the future despite the war. I'd like to recommend his bilingual poetry collection "Bagdad Haifa Berlin", AphorismA Verlag, 2019, and "Das kleine Boot in meiner Hand nenn ich Narbe". Gedichte. Parasitenpresse, 2023.
