It is because they needed to do it instead of GWS. It is just hard to see when and now GWS will be a success.
Footy in Tassie is almost dead. The clubs down there are getting smaller or shutting down, soccer and moreso basketball are taking over. It is what happens when you take for granted what you have.

This, "it needs to have a roof", stuff is nonsense. Tasmanian can sit in the cold and watch footy like they, and everyone else did for 150 years. There are also some good ways to build wind breakers and roofing for spectators without going nuts with a full roof.

Sydney Opera House went over budget. The Danish architect left in protest and never returned because they short changed his design - completed the external façade but short changed the inside design and left terrible acoustics that made it effectively an awful music venue for decades. They fixed it about 10 years ago at a huge additional cost and finally did it justice. Whole saga is embarrassing looking back now seeing how symbolic that venue has become.
Moral of the story - yes it will be expensive, but these things actually show a city/state actually has vision, inspires to be something. Is willing to take risk.
All these protesters are so lame - if they were in charge, nothing exciting would ever get done and you'd end up with...well what Tasmania is right now, a pretty plain, boring, predictable place.

Eddie is spot on with this, the AFL is trying to avoid a Brisbane Bears debacle from the 80's down in Tasmania. AFL teams are a serious commercial venture and need the infrastructure to support it. It has been pretty clear that a stadium was going to be part of the package for the past coupleofyears. If they don't want the stadium, then stop asking for a team. Put another team in WA or SA.

The Brisbane Bears won 6 Games in Season 1, 7 Games in Season 2, and 8 games in Season 3. Compare that with the GWS who were set up over a much longer period of time who Won 3 matches out of their first 44 Matches. Then there is the Suns they won only 6 matches in their first 2 seasons and have never ever made the Finals. If Tasmania were set up in under 5 months like the Bears were and they could win 6 matches in their first season that would be a Fantastic result. For both the AFL as well as Tasmanian Football.

There's a large portion of the Tasmanian population that just say NO to any development. We can't get anything off the ground down here using public money unless it goes into the bottomless pit of healthcare and housing (which we already spend A LOT on). They're far too short sighted to realise that a small, isolated state like ours needs economic development and a reason for young families and workers to live here instead of moving to the mainland. We need this project, and not just to get an AFL team. A heck of a lot of people down here want the stadium but it's the complainers and protestors that make all the noise. Bogan Lambie doesn't speak for everyone!

I grew up in the state, in Launceston. Victorians think South Australians are backward? They ain't experienced anything until they encounter Tasmanans. It's like it's just the cool and trendy thing to do down there, to just irrationally oppose anything that's positive progress. NIMBY's are usually very uninteresting people who lack excitement in their lives, so they need to stir up some drama and chaos of their own just to get the rush. And Tasmanians wonder why they keep getting excluded so often.
This stadium provides an oppurtunity to perhaps get a tram line running up and down the western shore. But you can bet your bottom dollar that the proposal will just be swiftly shot down by the same NIMBY's who are opposing the stadium.

    • @eddielong8663
      @eddielong8663 Год назад +4

I think you'd find that most of those protesters are just very boring people. As you can see, most of them range from middle aged to elderly. I highly doubt that even the footy followers among them (the old rusted-on fans of other clubs) have been rooting for the state to be granted a new local club of its own. Which is fine. They don't have to change allegiancies if they don't want to. But they're less influential than they think they are. Most of these people lack excitement in their lives, and this drama where they have something to complain about, provides the exact stimulation they need in order to feel alive.

But the long term vision of it paid dividends, and I think that's what Tassie really need to do here. The result of this would be unbelievable, it could make Tassie an absolute destination for so many sports fans, hospitality sector would be pumping. I mean C'mon people! That would provide so much economy for the state, stadium could be multi-use and as far as the funding shows the Launceston Stadium also gets upgraded? Eddie you're wrong about the employment. The unemployed won't be hired for this project. It'll come from labour from the mainland.
    The issue people have is
    1) the amount fo momey being spent. $750 Million at the current budget, this will be blown out by the end. AFL then gets to claim huge amounts from the developers if behind schedule, this is not no and is common but the current timeframes are just beyond ridiculous and very unlikely to be met.
    2) the dictation that the AFL has had in all of this. The AFL is contributing a grand total of 15 Million to this project (something like 1.5% of the budget). they also get paid 12 million yearly for the next 10 years by the Tasmanian government to keep the team. If the team doesn't preform the AFL gets to rip up the contract with no notice. Who in their right mind thinks that this is a good deal? They put in the lest and reap the most from this project.
    3) social issues in the community. There's better programs that this money could be spent on. The entire states medical facilities are in need of upgrade. The Launceston Hospital doesn't even have a helipad and is the biggest hospital in the north..
    4) the existing facilities. The current Belerive stadium has a seating capacity of 24.000. the new stadium is proposed to have 27,000. a grand total increase of 3,00 seats. If the state and federal governments were serious about the team they should be looking at negosiating with the AFL about splitting the mney and upgrading the current fields in the south and the north. Doing this will increase ticket sales with teams being able to play in both areas and increasing the crowds likely to turn up to a game.
    5) location. The Mac point location is going to be an abolsute nightmare during game times. Currently the traffic backs up well past this point and across the bridge most afternoons, what do you think another 10,000 people is going to be like with locals traveling to see any games/events?
Honestly, if the AFL was so concerned out the team falling over they should do a 5 year test run using the current facilities. Test the waters in those five years to see if the team is viable and would be able to stand afterwards. After those five years the state and federal governments could then look at building a new stadium possibly out at Glenorchy (where the Jack jumpers/grey hounds are) or near the airport.

A new AFL stadium, walking distance from another, with only 3k more capacity and likely no roof - for what will inevitably balloon out to more than $1 billion - is a mind bogglingly stupid proposal in the poorest state in Australia. The AFL holding an entire state to ransom to satisfy just a few big club presidents when their own seminal report backing a Tassie team's viability made no mention of a need for one - and likely had majority club support already - is an act of hubris, arrogance and ego unmatched in Australian sporting history. I can't quite figure out what's worse: Gillon McLachlan demanding the state pay the community-crippling opportunity cost of poorer government essential services and infrastructure thanks to public money being tied up in an unnecessary white elephant. Or, the federal and Tasmanian governments not standing up for themselves and pushing back on an a small, egomaniacal group of sporting powerbrokers with undue, corrupt influence.
Tasmania has the tightest rental market in the country. The most limited revenue base with an aging population. A health system stretched almost beyond repair.
Clearly, many others in this comment section just can't move beyond their long-held dream of a Tassie toward the bigger picture
