  • The Tasmanian state election could throw out the plans for the AFL's 19th team, the Tasmanian Devils, with many residents believing the $715 million could be better spent tackling other problems.
Senator Jacqui Lambie explains why she's against the stadium.

Private or corporate investment seeks a return on investment in monetary terms in the shortest possible timeframe but governments must invest in social projects and infrastructure that has long-term benefits. Otherwise, why bother with healthcare spending, with education, with housing? Why? Because the costs to society of NOT investing in these areas are much more grave. How much does an under-educated, under-trained population cost society? How much does it cost to have families homeless, and all the generational damage that does?

AFL is an outdoor sport isn’t it? Not as though they are hosting matches in Antarctica. Take football in europe- at times they play in snow and a lot colder temperatures. Luton town for example promoted to the EPL in their small, 100 year old stadium. Yes they spent money ( £10 million) to bring it up to spec, but there is no mandate for EPL teams to have roofed stadiums, and that is the most watched football league in the world. I'm from the U.S. Don't build a new stadium, renovate a current one. It's much cheaper!

That's a waste too. 2 weeks of events you could just put on over the whole year without the Olympic price tag. Does anyone think about the Olympics outside those two weeks? 2000 was the last one I saw any of.

So sick of whinging Tasmanians. They don't deserve an AFL team. It simply doesn't make commercial sense. It doesn't add to the competition. As per usual, Tasmanians claim they "deserve" something but refuse to spend their own money.
Way prefer either a third WA team or a Canberra team over buldging Tasmanians who refuse to pay their own way.
