Jimmy Bartel is too good for this panel. I appreciate he actually takes a moment to look at the situation objectively and give more insight than the fake moral outrage that Damien Barrett is only able to offer. And is Eddie for real. Only in 2024 will we talk more about some words someone said as opposed to the violent act that preceded it.
Storm in a teacup, but the media has to whip up outrage about the despicable Al Clarkson. They have to go back 11 years to show that he will never change, so there is nothing "constantly apologise" about this. Jimmy is the only one with a bit of common sense on that panel and I had expected better from Lloyd. Clarko has just seen his captain wiped out by a dog act and looks at the perpetrator who is showing zero care or remorse, so he blows up momentarily to give him a serve with zero homophobic intentions. The correct interpretation of his words would be along the lines of "you're a farking lowlife" either to Webster or someone who stood up for him.
How has North covered for Clarko? He was exonerated by the AFL in the Hawthorn racism saga, so what's that got to do with anything? Is Damo pre empting that the Human Rights Commission is going to find him guilty and that it therefore should be taken into consideration? The AFL botched the Hawthorn investigation which has already caused North to lose Clarko for half a season without compensation for North from the AFL. They owe Clarko and North big time for that complete stuff up.
It seems Eddie is in the know and I'll be surprised if $25k plus a 2 week suspended sentence isn't right on the money. Let the fine at least be directed to a charity of Clarko's choice instead of going into the pockets of the AFL.
There was a whole other list they didn't show.
Funny Lloyd's moral posturing about Clarko saying a word, given his ex-team got 36 played avd their coach suspended for a year for drug use, and Lloyd wasn't angry and condemning of that.
As far as I am concerned, Lloyd has lost any high moral ground.
Barrett is a grub anyway and I wouldn't expect any less from him. He drove the Bulldogs' Tom Boyd out of the game after all so I wouldn't put anything past Damo.

Of the incidents on the list, there is more to the story about the one against Port Adelaide supporters.
Two supporters were hassling Clarko after a match when Port played Hawthorn years ago. They were stopping him from leaving and pushing against him. He abused one and pushed him aside but only after he had been abused and pushed first.
The supporter tried to sue Clarko for assault but it went nowhere. But the media tried to make a thing of it.
North not receiving compensation? Feel free to take the pick 3 you stole from us last season and the other 17 picks the AFL handed you, along with our most successful coach. Basket case.
As a proud North supporter I wouldn't have expected anything less from Clarko. Probably not the best choice of words but we have to consider the context and emotions at the time.
Put simply the hit was absolutely disgusting and unnecessary. Surprised that everyone kept their emotions and disdain in check - I know I wouldn't have.
Concerning that the panel are more angry about Clarkson's words than the fact a young man was felled and concussed in an attack.
Where was the anger towards Webster? Didn't see Lloyd or Barrett as angry about him as they were towards Clarko.Maybve condemning Webster doesn't get them as much virtually signalling love on Twitter.

The idea that Clarko should be penalised for anything is absolutely insane. He stood up for his player who could have had his entire career ruined by the actions of another. Clarko did the right thing and in any sane person's mind, he is entirely in the right here.

As a coach, a leader of your club with a lot of young men who look up to you, you can’t go letting your emotions get the best of you.
There are other ways to show your support/ defence of your player that doesn’t involve high school name calling across a field. Very unprofessional and embarrassing.

I went to a boys' faith-based school and it was only after growing up and hearing from mates who'd been in the closet as teens that I realized in restrospect (after not knowing any better and initially gaslighting them on their experiences at first) how brave those dudes were for putting up with the rampant casual "never gave a second thought to it" homophobia that existed growing up; how those kids struggling with their sexuality (on top of the normal anxiety teenagers have) just had to suck it up (so well, in many cases, that we never knew they were even dealing with anything at the time) even though it deeply bothered and hurt them.
Sure, a lot of people using the slurs or at equating being gay as an insult or being weak may not have even given a second thought that they were deliberatly hurting someone's feelings, but again, whether that was the intent or not, a bit of empathy shows how you can understand that it contributed to those kids feeling there was something wrong with them and that it wouldn't be acceptable or safe to come out.
(And while I hate how conspiciously this term is thrown around) it is our "privilege" as straight people that we will never directly know or experience what it's like and how uncomfortable it is to be in environments that tolerate that. It's easy to say it was no big deal when you're not emotionally connected to it or not the target of what's being said/done.
Sheesh! So the point you're trying to make is that you shouldn't insult someone when angry because it might hurt their, or others, feelings. 🤣

These panellists are more outraged at what Clarko did than what Webster did. Webster Smashed Simpkin into next week, yet little was said.
This, and when Maynard took out Brayshaw, shows to me thar the footy media don't really care about concussion to players, as in the Brayshaw case, they were more interested in protecting Maynard from suspension, and in this one, more concerned about some word Clarko may have said, than the condition of Brayshaw or Simpkin. Those two men seem to become an afterthought.
It shows me that footy journos aren't sincere in stopping concussion.

Powell Pepper didn’t deserve 4 matches for that, he made a last m8 Ute decision to bump with more than likely no intent to hurt the player so 4 weeks is overkill, not saying he didn’t deserve a suspension but someone decides to premeditate a punch at someone’s head and they will receive the same suspension even though it premeditated so that’s my problem, players should be given consideration if it was not intentional but reckless

The community has not changed, the AFL are just worried about law suits. I am sick of weak men like Damo dragging us further and further away from what this sport was about. If a couple of long retired dudes decide to run their car into a tree or top themselves, doesn’t mean we change the fabric of the game.

The AFL and it's commentators are an increasingly censorious little bunch. Reflecting our political realm. Remember a few decades ago when we all understood free speech was a good thing. I don't like the AFL much anymore. This is one of the reasons.
