As an older golfer, the idea of longer short irons is really appealing! Although my longest iron is a 7 iron. Just can’t get my wife and kids to give up food for a few months so I can afford them. 😀
Just did a very similar fitting session with Brandon Frazier at Avoda last week. Ordered combo length in black, 4deg up, with KBS TGI 70 shafts and med Ultralite grips. The shaft choice was the big surprise. Previous fitters had me in PX 6.5. But I was stripping the lighter shaft consistency with the same speed and less effort so it was the winner. If you have the control and it’s lighter why go with a heavier shaft? The single length 4i is hard to get up in the air. You strike the ball very hard with a lot of forward shaft lean so your dynamic loft is not going to get it in the air. Your speed is impressive. Keep in mind it has the loft of 2 iron. I really wanted same length as well. Combo Length really is best compromise. I think you should go combo with that steel fiber shaft. Can’t wait to get mine.
Interesting! Love to hear people’s different fitting stories with Avoda. That’s a big shaft change! If it works it works I agree with what you’re saying - I have a plan in mind which I’ll reveal in the next video 👀
6 hcap here. Im 6'6 and last year I built my clubs to 9-P-50-54-60 are all same length and lie angle(my fitted 9 iron length and lie). 8-4 iron i go 1/4 inch intervals longer. I feel so much more consistent than my previous fit which was 1.5 inches longer than standard length across the board. I think taller golers could greatly benefit from single length especially in short irons and wedges. P.S. Love your reviews and content. Your swing speed is right there with mine so its nice to see how new products fair with someone who can bomb but has difficulty controlling it occasionally.
Agreed massively about one length and tall golfers. I’ve never felt more consistent! Appreciate the comment. Occasionally off line is very kind, you should have seen my round yesterday! 😂 plenty of Avoda content coming soon.
Thanks for the comment, would actually love to pick your brain a little more about this. I'm 6'5, 10.2 HC and I've only ever played with the irons I got fitted some years ago when I was probably more like a 20HC. I'm definitely above avg ball speed, and I've been really thinking about getting a fitting for 1 length Irons recently. I struggle with inconsistency switching clubs and can be prone to a 2 way miss, and I also just never feel physically comfortable when standing over the ball with 9-SW. I really enjoy hitting my 6 and 7 irons. My current irons are +2 upright and +1 length. Questions: 1. When you built your clubs did you just request these lengths from whatever brand you wanted and they were able to build out a custom set? Or were these Avoda or Cobra? If so, how did the gapping turn out? 2. Have you ever played a true one length before? I was leaning that was (cobra) but then I came across these mixed length Avoda and the idea makes more sense. Unfortunately there is no fitter in Chicago. If so, would you get one length or what you have now again? 3. What is your lie angle on these? 4. If you had a general idea of length and lie angle, would you feel comfortable ordering something like Avoda without a fitting? Thank you!
@@CNW21 hey sorry for the late reply. I feel you're frustration on the short clubs which is why I made all my wedges up to my nine iron the same length. I've never tried true one length irons but wouldn't be opposed to trying the combo one length like avoda does Using my 7 iron lie angle as a reference, I made an Excel spreadsheet with the lofts and lies that I thought would work for me and brought them to the PGA superstore and they cut the shafts to length adjusted the loft/lies I wanted and then they put new grips on. Highly suggest finding your own lie angles but My P-50-56-60 are at 65 degrees lie angle. My 7 is at 63.5 and my 4 is at 63. I added lead tape to my 4/5/6 iron to help with swing weights. It's not perfect but It works for me. Hope that helps!
@@SasquatchN64 I’m 6’3”, 38 wrist to floor, normally +1” length, + 2 upright, 100 mph swing speed with 7 iron Had a bunch of back and forth with Avoda reps who heavily recommended only going +0.5” to 37.5” total (my normal 8 iron) and 2 deg upright. I could not be happier with the length. So happy I did not go +1” because they feel so easy to hit My only issue so far is right/fading ball flight. It’s minor, but I think I will eventually go all the way up to +4 upright, 66 deg total. My guess is that because the clubs have 0 offset, the club head “arrives earlier” by comparison. Not a big deal because my local club fitter can bend them 2 upright then I’ll be in business for next season. Love the 105X Axiom shafts. Outrageously stable and I think I could have gone with the 125X and been just as happy
The combo set makes most sense. As an example we all want the blades in our bags because they look sublime but not having the ability to strike them properly the majority of the time, stinging fingers from those bottom groove strikes makes us realise we messed up. The one length set makes as much sense as the butter knife blades. Go for the combo and get the 4 iron and probably 5 as well launching properly. Only an opinion of course
@@GolfmagicPlusOkay, all seriousness, this is the 2nd or 3rd I've seen a 3i in the set. I bought the full set and didn't even have the 3i to LW set as an option
Im a high handicapper but wanted to try something different. Really happy with my single length set, went with the LA Golf shafts, jumbomax medium grips, and the utility head in the 4 iron. Only got them last week but so far they feel amazing. Also just ordered the new 3 iron driving iron they just brought out. Why not 😂
Did you get to test out the LA Golf shafts vs the Axioms? It's the only decision I'm going to have to make next month and I'm currently leaning toward the Axioms
@BigDawgCAM I didn't get to try them out in person, I just did the online fitting and went with what they recommended. I'm not good enough to notice the difference between the two either way, but I'm very happy with the set 👍
Definitely on team one-length I feel like hitting an 18 deg head at 3-5 deg is a bit of an anomaly maybe from the artificial turf and you will learn to hit it closer to ~10 deg over time. If not, you can always weaken it ~2 deg along with the 5, 6, 7, etc. during a gapping session
Very interesting approach to fitting and clubs. Thank you for sharing! Question: How does your lie testing with the Avoda clubs match (or not match) with the Ping Color Code fitting chart? Thanks.
I tried one length cobra irons last year with mixed results. I struggled with my gapping at the top end of the set. 5-7 irons were way too similar in yardage. The combo length might be the way to go. I'm back to standard for the time being. I play them well but struggle with fat shots from time to time due to the length variance
Thanks for the video! I've been considering one length irons but unfortunately there are no Avoda fitters by me, just Cobra. Would actually love to pick your brain a little more about this. I'm 6'5, 10.2 HC and I've only ever played with the game improvement irons I got fitted some years ago when I was probably more like a 20+HC. Seems to me you need a utility 4 iron or a hybrid 4 to obtain launch and descent. I guess you could just hit 4 iron stingers if you’re “too good” for a hybrid….
Hi, I am Darren from Germany. With a height of 1.77 meters and a weight of 80 kilograms, I have an athletic and balanced physique, which gives me stability and control in my golf swing. Current I am playing the Wilson Launchpad 2 clubs at regular graphit shafts, and I achieve a consistent carry distance of 135 meters with my 7-iron. I’m considering using one length irons set to the length of a 9-iron, since it’s my most reliable club. However, I’ve been advised by many that the shaft might be too short to achieve the distance that I need. Could this shorter length impact my performance, or could it still be a helpful setup for improving my consistency across LW - i5 irons? Thx for your feedback!
Did you move the ball position with the one length 4 iron? It could be that you had the same AA as with the 6 iron which would result in it launching too low. Moving the ball further up in your stance like you're trying to hit a high one might be worth a try.
You’re not supposed to do that, it’s supposed to be same ball position etc every single time with one length. I get your point, and it is something I’ve tried in the past, but wouldn’t recommend…as I started topping them! 😂
