Interested to hear which you like more. I may be in the minority but really like the 201 even though they aren't as pretty to look down at as the 301 or 101t.
Hey man, nice job. As a current builder myself, noticed the slight tape build up/bunching from all those wraps. I found that using an old steel shaft or thick screw driver smooths that out. Running it up and down helps get rid of that and it won’t be felt under the grip. Hope that helps for future grippings. Keep up the good work.
I've never found that the wrinkles are noticeable with the grip on. At least I haven't found anyone who ever said they could feel it. People don't feel the shaft step edge in a Dynamic Gold under the grip and a tape wrinkle is smaller than that.
Adam. I'd say your knowledge of club building has increased exponentially thanks to the insights given to you by all of the 'experts' in the comments section. As a hobbyist and trained builder, I wouldn't dream of telling another person how they should/shouldn't do a build. But that hasn't deterred many on this page 🙄
You definitely kept the secret last Friday when I mentioned that Grant played Mizuno before moving to TaylorMade... For the viewers, let me say that an in person fitting with Adam is a great time. He moved at my pace, and got me dialed into a new set of irons, wedges, and a hybrid. I wanted to be completely unbiased and hit anything he offered me. In a blind test of 6 or 7 comparable iron heads, the Takomo 301CB was in the top 3, with the Mizuno 241 and 243. The results were so close in fact, we took them to a par 3 shootout to determine the winner, which was the 243 by a slim margin. Honestly, I could've still chosen the Takomo, saved some money, and been just as happy.
Congrats AJ and nice builds! You can tell this isn’t your “first rodeo” when you’re making the same moves having clips of both builds running at the same time. Thanks for all the teaching and insights you provide.
I remember a video you had on a while back on the amount of tape being added on and it really didn’t make that much sense to do as the difference in the width was not that much, or was the added 6-7 grip tapes used to counterbalance the golf club. Wouldn’t it be easier to just add a midsize grip. Thank you, Tony
@@EFGMCI need to get my irons regripped and a fitter suggested midsize during my recent driver fitting. Can you recommend a firmer midsize grip? Thanks?
Are there any builders out there that pure the head and the shaft together. I tape the laser pointer to the side of the house and keep turning the head until I get a pierced straight on no circles.
How about frequency matched shafts? Or are these newer shafts better quality or consistent than they used to be, or because they are tapered tip shafts?
Awesome job. Like how you put some epoxy inside the ferrules. The fitter who did mine must’ve skipped that step when I had my T100S irons RESHAFTED with TT Red AMT red shafts. Some of the ferrules have creeped up towards the grip end. When my grooves wear out on my 2021 T100S irons I’m thinking of going to Takomo. The reviews have been solid and for about $500 for a set of irons it’s a great deal.
as an avid club builder, I enjoy your videos and your attention to detail. I personally have never worked with pured golfshafts and the proper alignment when assembling but I was surprised that Grant didn't have that done. Personally I'm not that good that I believe it would make a difference for me. What are your thoughts on pured shafts?
@brianroas7936 If you don't have a belt sander, you can polish "turn" the ferrules with a lint free cloth and some acetone, followed with some rubbing alcohol. The acetone lightly melts the overhanging edges of the ferrule to match up with the hosel and the rubbing alcohol will bring back the shine. It's a poor man's ferrule turning, but it works as good as anything.
Using taper tip constant weight shafts so you are only going to butt trim to length. The tip section comes from the factory at the correct stiffness for each individual iron head.
You only tip cut Parallel tip shafts not taper tip like in video. Parallel tip all the shafts are exact same and you cut tip depending on what iron it goes in then cut butt to length. With Taper tip which is the better shaft and what all pros use you choose the shaft made for the number iron you are building
With that many wraps why not just use midsize with a few extra wraps? Wouldn’t that be about the same and be easier to install? Just curious. Thanks and great video!
Iain Poulter said that he liked the more solid feel under his hands as opposed to the softer rubbery feel of a larger grip. Don’t know if it’s the same for Grant though…
That's the big difference is the Tour Velvet gets much harder with all that tape vs the midsize version. I think a midsize in a firmer model might be better for him.
100% don't understand why grant would want all those wraps instead of a Midsize grip. Maybe people don't understand that tape weighs many grams as well so they think they are getting a lighter grip with standard not knowing they will come out about the same as Midsize
Did you weigh the heads? If not why not? Variances in HW gaps could explain the variances in SW you got, which can be corrected during assembly. What about weighing the grips to install them from lightest to heaviest? Or at least to see if you have any outliers in weight? As to FLO, apart from vibrational variances , CPM can vary depending on orientation. These things make the build more precise, to eliminate as many variables as possible.
The heads all come with weight printed on them. I've yet to see Golf Pride grips that fall outside 1g plus or minus and my scale isn't that precise to judge that. FLO is a complete waste of time. Every major steel shaft is under 1% variance from hard side to soft side. Will not change anything.
Tape layers are not efficient at increasing grip diameter but they do make the grip feel harder. Of course the better option in my opinion would be to find a firmer midsize grip if you want both larger and firmer.
Great video, thanks. Quick question regarding the extra layers of tape. Didn’t you say in a video with specifically on that topic that extra tape hardly changes grip thickness?
Nice build, since I haven’t seen it i. The video, how do you lighten the swing weights? Some came out as D5 but how do you get them to D2? Add weight to the grip? Drill in the head?
They did come out heavier. I won't ever recommend drilling iron heads lighter unless we are getting into much more extreme SW values because of over length builds. Counterbalancing is a very different topic and should not be used just to swing weight a golf club. Making a golf club heavier to make it lighter does not make sense for me.
Since the money taper, I’m guessing the tips are not gonna be cut so the shit in the shafts be glued to the head before you cut the length cause a lying might need to be adjusted. If you cut first some could be long simply could be short by the time you adjust the triangle.
Love the video. Always get confused on why the 201s are never considered. It's always a 301 or 101t. Figured he'd be a 201 kind of guy close to those 770s he was gaming.
How much different is seven layers of tape under standard grip compared to a mid-sized grip with just one layer? At least 15-20 years back the grips gave in faster, if you stretched them over an exces amount of tape.
Yes they will wear out much faster this way as the rubber gets stretched further and further. The diameter on these was .940 Standard grips measure .900 and midsize start at .960 inch.
@, it is about 6 mm longer circumference on the mid-sized grip, which is defenately noticeable, but probably could be adapted to in no time. I used to tape three overlays and the grips went within few months. Since years ago been playing the MCC 4+ in midsize and they really wear slowly compared to what I used back in the day. Compared to standard the feel is significantly different, but since long fingers and arthritis takes its toll, I have found the thicker grip comfortable.
I'm surprised swing weights are so low with +1/2 length and a tour velvet. I saw D-2 on spec sheet and was thinking no way you could get them that light?
They came out heavier than D2. No way to get D2 unless you start drilling heads (not great idea) or counter balancing which also is not a good idea for hitting a swing weight number.
@@EFGMC right on / I agree on the no drilling or counter balance. I dont think anyone wants a 130x at D2 either, no way to feel the head or load the shaft.
I believe height does not always mean longer clubs. Most people that are 6" 4" probably have longer arms than a 5'10" person. measure from wrist to floor with hand hanging down while standing straight will help determine proper club lenght as a starting point. Also how you personally address and swing determines proper lie angle. Hope this helps some.
what do you use for tape? brampton makes good easy peel cut to length sections but it looks like you're pulling from a roll...curious as to what that is. thanks
Regarding the swing weights are they all different? I noticed on your notes that they are but I have no idea what that means in terms of consistent performance. I thought the swing weights had to be the same? Any insight would be welcome. Very interesting video 👍
The small differences in the SW I addressed during the assembly using more or less epoxy to get everyone feeling similar. If the weights were more significantly off, we would need to use tip weights but that wasn't necessary here.
@@clintwestbrick664 midsized grips are made with thicker rubber. Sometimes that can dampen the feel and seem a little too squishy in the hands. Extra wraps under a thinner grip allows for a more true feel transfer and feedback while at a size that fits the player, especially a high level player like GH.
All assembled by hand, usually in a factory mass produced. Pros and Takomo staff (at least most of them) have dedicated builders who they know and always work on their equipment.
Are Tokomo head hosels not .355 taper tip? Why the shims? Also, if the swingweight (pre-build) were coming to D3.5 to D4'ish, how did you back him into his desired D2? Was it the 7 layers of tape acting like a counter-balance? I play GolfPride Midsize which don't weigh too much more than the standard and there is no way on earth to reach D2 on Takomo 301cb heads @ .5" over. (The Takomo 6 iron head comes in at 261grams.)
6 grams for the 7 wraps will bring swingweight down by more than a point (~4.5 g per sw point at the butt end). But, yeah, the one that measured D4 raw would be hard to bring down to D2. You could drill out a couple of grams from the hosel of the clubhead.
The end result is slightly heavier than D2 based on these specs. I strongly dislike making club heads lighter unless you are dealing with more extreme lengths (1.5 inch long or more). Heavier head is almost always better than lighter and the most important thing with with weight in golf clubs is continuity so all the irons feel the same.
Couldn’t get a better club builder ,was wondering when Grant would make the switch to Tacoma. For the price is there any reason more and more players would be considering these beauties. After seeing the Bryan bros say nothing but great things about these clubs.
If you need or want midsize, just buy midsize. This is a bad way to increase size imo. Grant wanted this but I would never recommend it. Did a couple videos recently getting into this.
Getting a fitting with you -- How would I know if those clubs would be suited for me without swinging them with a number of shaft options? Are they a hollow-body iron with forgiveness?
A midsized grip is just a thicker rubber and can dampen some of the feeling as well as seem more squishy in the hands. Extra tape wraps and a thinner grip keep more true feel in tact for these high level players. Nothing wrong with a midsized grip but I'm sure Grants tried them out and firmer with a little more feedback is his comfort zone.
Love this.
Can't wait to watch you hole out with these

At least 15-20 years back the grips gave in faster, if you stretched them over an exces amount of tape.
Yes they will wear out much faster this way as the rubber gets stretched further and further. The diameter on these was .940
Standard grips measure .900 and midsize start at .960 inch.
Just a question, why would you use a manual swing weight scale over a digital one?
A manual SW scale is just as accurate, just a bit slower to get the number.
How far off were the measured loft and lies from the listed loft and lies?
Within a degree on all these.
@@EFGMC Nice, thanks!
Interesting how Grant is 6’3 but uses standard lie angles. How does that work?
I believe height does not always mean longer clubs. Most people that are 6" 4" probably have longer arms than a 5'10" person. measure from wrist to floor with hand hanging down while standing straight will help determine proper club lenght as a starting point. Also how you personally address and swing determines proper lie angle. Hope this helps some.
Love your videos.. great content
what do you use for tape? brampton makes good easy peel cut to length sections but it looks like you're pulling from a roll...curious as to what that is. thanks
I use the Golfworks double sided tape. 2in width.
@@EFGMC i tried those...somehow the last 20% of the roll is only 1 sided. I can send it in I still have it....guess i'll keep shopping thanks tho.
Wow. Grant and I have the same club builder! #bigflex
What’s the difference is using that much tape vs just a Midsize tour velvet?
RIP Golfsmith. 😢
Been a while seince I attemded a GolfSmith school, picked up a few great tips,
Any reason why you did not spine align?
this might be a dumb question but instead of building up the grips with so many layers, why not just go to a mid sized grip?
That's what he requested but agree that midsize seems like a better future option.
Hi, I am a little confused because of the 7 build up tapes. The grip must feel very firm. Why does he not use a midsize grip? BR
These are the specs he wanted. I assume the firmness is what he likes.
@@EFGMCaah, ok. We talked about size changings by using more tapes. I also use 4 tapes but in combination with mcc plus 4. That's fits me better.
@@clintwestbrick664 midsized grips are made with thicker rubber. Sometimes that can dampen the feel and seem a little too squishy in the hands. Extra wraps under a thinner grip allows for a more true feel transfer and feedback while at a size that fits the player, especially a high level player like GH.
is there a machine the big company use to build clubs? also do all pro golfer get there clubs hand build?
All assembled by hand, usually in a factory mass produced. Pros and Takomo staff (at least most of them) have dedicated builders who they know and always work on their equipment.
Didn't you make a video showing tape build up does not work?
I do what the client wants but yes build up tape in inefficient.
What does the brass shim do?
The hosel opening is larger than the outer diameter of the shaft. The Shim fills that space to ensure a good fit.
I LOVE my 101Ts
Are Tokomo head hosels not .355 taper tip? Why the shims? Also, if the swingweight (pre-build) were coming to D3.5 to D4'ish, how did you back him into his desired D2? Was it the 7 layers of tape acting like a counter-balance? I play GolfPride Midsize which don't weigh too much more than the standard and there is no way on earth to reach D2 on Takomo 301cb heads @ .5" over. (The Takomo 6 iron head comes in at 261grams.)
How’d you get them down to D2 being half an inch longer? Do the wraps counter balance that much?
How many layers of tape until you just go to a midsize grip??
If you need or want midsize, just buy midsize. This is a bad way to increase size imo. Grant wanted this but I would never recommend it. Did a couple videos recently getting into this.
If Grant doesn't hit the MB's, then my 25 hcp ass will definitely be able too.
I understand the 301 CB's but what is the purpose of the 101T's? Aren't they game improvement irons?
I call them players hollow body similar to a Mizuno Pro 245 or TM 770. Can be helpful in the longer irons for sure.
Getting a fitting with you -- How would I know if those clubs would be suited for me without swinging them with a number of shaft options? Are they a hollow-body iron with forgiveness?
The 101t is a players style hollow body with very traditional lofts.
Why not use midsize grip?
A midsized grip is just a thicker rubber and can dampen some of the feeling as well as seem more squishy in the hands. Extra tape wraps and a thinner grip keep more true feel in tact for these high level players. Nothing wrong with a midsized grip but I'm sure Grants tried them out and firmer with a little more feedback is his comfort zone.
Thats awesome
