    I have been closely following the RK588 devices as they have come out and think that in the absence of the AMLogic S908X SOC, essentially being stop gapped with the A311D2, as seen on the Vim4, this SOC is going to really set the cat amongst the pigeons and when it gets to gaming handhelds, could be quite the winner in the lower/middle end of the market. The one thing that could hold it back is pricing. Some of these early devices are getting into Intel/AMD mini pc territory, where the versatility of x86 will often be more preferable. As things stand, the Radxa Rock 5 board seems to offer the best value, although not actually released yet, so Mekotronics may well have some stiff competition. I was glad to see you test Kodi and considering that it will not be optimised for this SOC at all yet, the playback looked impressive for what was selected. The jump from RK3399 to this is giant and could be a huge seller. The biggest surprise with this is that out of the box it seems to do everything very well, which is almost unheard of in the AMLogic/Rockchip/Allwinner sphere of products. Linux is unlikely to get native GPU support because w are dealing with a Mali GPU, who do not tend to release open source drivers, so the panfrost development would have to be the way forward. Some boards will come with the ability to add an NVME SSD. My next purchase is definitely going to have an RK3588. It is just what form it will be that has yet to be decided. Going back to a Pi after using this must feel such a backward step. Mekotronics should add standard pricing to their site so everybody can know what they can get for their money.

    My interest in Android as a Desktop has been growing. With more powerful ARM SBC's becoming available, I think it is just a matter of time before this becomes the default choice for the majority, especially since so many already use Android on their phone.

    Ha! I was just looking at buying something with the RK3588 chip. I was looking at preordering the ROCK5 Model B from Ameridroid, but this looks promising as well.

    • @auto117666
      @auto117666 2 года назад

      After some review, I went with the ROCK5 since the $50 coupon (that you have to purchase for $5), lowered the cost down to about $130 total. It is still on preorder so it will ship hopefully soon...
      It was somewhat hard to compare costs since the Mekotronics model reviewed includes a case, a power supply, a remote control, etc... Most of that I do not need.

    When you send Mekotronics an email, they can send you a link for Debian and other images. You will need to connect it to a Windows PC to write the image. I even managed to almost brick the board, but there is even a rescue procedure.

    interesting device. personally i always wonder with these chinese soc arm apus what is the ground truth situation in regards to upstream kernel contributions to support that chip. because most of the time we see the company maintaining a seperate fork of the kernel (for example like odroid, where typically its kerne forks are all being published up on github). this then has to be maintained ad infinitum due to gpl license incompatibility, or whatever other reasons not all of their kernel patchsets are not get upstreamed? at least i would like to know more about this. because an ongoing kernel support is necessary for other features in linux, for example other types of features which are not specific to the soc itself. but which are required to run specific softwares
    for the android remote (with air mouse)... i recommend to try out the pepper jobs w10 gyro. unfortunately they have not updated this remote for a very long time. they said on their forum they are working on a 2nd version. it just does not appear yet? the thing is the original 1st w10 gyro remote (despite being quite good in many respects)... it still has a couple of drawbacks that needs to be improved upon.

At this level, x86 definitely has more grunt, not to mention better graphics support in Linux and Windows. ARM devices certainly win in terms of power consumption, but that's not so much of an issue in a mains powered device (or larger form factor devices with big batteries, as with most laptops).
