third strike pitch hit the ground with 2 outs, everything is live. Our players knew this in 12u.
yep.
-rick
The second I saw the ball hit the floor I was like "thats live isn't it?"
First thing I thought of
I think the runners were on 1st and 2nd not 2nd and 3rd. Watch the sequence at which they all cross the plate. This added to the confusion of the defensive team because they gave up on throwing to 1st thinking it was unnecessary as 1st was occupied. Obviously this does not apply with 2 outs, as the desperate 2nd baseman makes clear with his pleas “there’s 2 outs!!”. Catcher won’t be sleeping for weeks. All he had to do was toss it to 1st.
In that situation, game on the line someone needs to remind everyone
dropped 3rd strike!!
My problem is that pitch clearly is not a strike!
I coached youth baseball for almost 10 years. I burned it into the heads of my infielders that if there was a dropped third strike with two outs, the catcher and first baseman were to complete the play as normal no matter what the umpire called or where the runners were on the bags. This repetition was designed to guarantee a standard behavior in handling such a play which coincidentally would have totally avoided what happened here. This coach and his players failed to play the game, and took it in the teeth as a result. They have no one to blame but themselves.
I haven't played ball in over 40 years and i still remember being coached to complete the play like this. I also remember catching other teams making the same mistake these boys did. I played first base.
I knew the team in red was going to win.
A+ comment.

@@tytsports I generally don't think of myself as a snippy guy, but here's an A+ comment for you: delete this video and start over. You do yourself and your employer a disservice with this video. Who can believe any of your future analysis if you leave this video up stating quite clearly, upon replay, there is a swing and a miss.Oh my gosh.
Easy play. It happens every single game in little league. I've known this since i started playing baseball. Every player should know that a dropped third strike has to be tagged or thrown out. The catcher even attempts to make the tag.
That is the really weird part. The catcher knows and goes for the tag but then is just like "nah we good" when everyone else start celebrating.
That 2nd baseman knew the whole time and no one on his team paid him any attention.
I definitely noticed him freaking out and trying to tell his teammates
Someone in the stands also knew, kept yelling "2 outs".
2nd baseman knew the rule😂😂, dude was losing his s&$t looking for the ball
yes!
-rick
The Catcher Literally " Dropped the Ball" and the Team Celebrated... Wow...
The catcher snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and stuck it in his pocket.
That is the key. If he dropped the ball the 2nd baseman would have tagged the winning run out.
@@denniskumabe734 yeah I feel bad for the second baseman. You can hear him yelling that there are still two out.
I don’t know why people are saying this is rare. It happens everyday in the majors. Most of the time the batter decides not to run or the catcher just tags him out
Unfortunately this play is the focus of Hornel's loss, but a full viewing of the bottom of the 7th inning will make you question how this team even made it to the playoffs.
The most confusing part is they all have the same uniform.
EVERYONE knows a dropped third strike with two outs must be a put out of the hitter (tag our throw to first). Coaches fault for not teaching his players the rules.
Yep, always run it out.
Not everyone, You know 4 people. Relax.
@@klaskycsupomediamaker2889 Everyone who has played baseball does.

@@klaskycsupomediamaker2889 You are wrong just because you never heard of a rule 6 year olds learn when they start to play baseball dosen't make you correct.
Second baseman knew the whole time #33. What a way to lose
Exactly .. rules are rules.. catcher either needs to tag the batter or throw to first base to complete the out! Definitely a hard lesson to learn.
The batter didn't swing, nice "attention to detail". 🤣🤣
It was all CORRECT....the batter knew once the ball was dropped to run to first and he did.... Meanwhile with the ball still live and the other term NOT paying attention the players on base were told to RUN....No bothered to notice the coach telling them to RUN ,,,RUN.....by the time they got their heads out of their butts from acting like they won the world series the damage was done and the game over and they stuck with the "L".....
Catcher really wanted that game ball
The 2nd basemen immediately saw what was going on, and his team paid no attention!!!
Catcher wanted the game ball more than he wanted to throw it lol
That's why it's always good to know the rules and number one be humble
Poor catcher jumping up and down with the ball in his back pocket….
That's got to hurt. It's one thing to lose a game like that, but a title, damn.
It was a playoff.
No title.
Should not have been ruled a strike as the pitch was nowhere near the strike zone nor did the batter swing at the pitch… heads up play by Pal-Mac players
Doesn’t matter the umpire called strike 3 and the catcher dropped it. The ump even gave a signal, just finish the play honestly.
Lol! Never count your chickens before they hatch!
Not umpire's issue.
That’s a bad news bears play 😂
for real.
-rick
Did not tag or throw out the batter. He dropped the ball from the pitch on 3rd strike.
Can you clarify your statement of "There was a swing and a miss by the batter"? Did you watch the video?
Definitely not a swing, just a bad called strike 3. Looked like a ball to me
Also was a Sectional Championship, State Tourneys are just beginning.
Thia was NOT a state championship game. It was the B1 Section 5 title game.
Sectional title for division B1. My son played normally in A2 I think. They went independent this year.
Did the umpire call that pitch a strike? That was a ball.
Justice was served lol.
Doesn't matter. That was the Ump's judgement and it can not be changed. Best to know the rules. Baseball has a lot of quirky rules that only occasionally come into play.
no way you could know that. Ump is blocking the view when it goes over the plate. Doesn't matter where the catcher catches it, it matters where the ball crosses (or doesn't cross) the plate.
When your enemy is making a mistake don't interrupt him.
Well i wouldn't say "INSTANTLY". They let the batter run completely around the bases for a homerun. Horrible coaching and just a horrible play by the catcher.
At any time one of the other players could have picked that ball up and tagged runners out.

Jesus, YES YOU HAVE TO TAG THE BATTER!!
This is awesome because it teaches the lesson that knowing the rules is important. I'm Australian and don't even like or follow baseball but still knew about this rule.
OMG I'm originally from close to Hornell NY. That has to be the worst way to loss a championship. When you watch the video it looks like catcher realized it when to tag him missed, and then was going to throw it down to first but when he looked, I'm guessing no one was there so he tried to play it off.
I have extreme schadenfreude for these types of clips, to see someone or a team celebrate too early and get nothing afterwards is priceless 🤣
it hurts tho.
-rick
@@tytsports True for those that go through the experience, however when you take it upon yourselves to not wait for the official to make the final call or completely ignore the idiom "Don't count your chickens before they've hatched", you can only hope that they'll learn a lesson from it
Adding "schadenfreude" to my vocabulary . . .
Good for them. Play until the ump calls it an out. Poor coaching.
If there ever was a time to NOT " throw ya hands in the air and wave em' like just don't care" 😟😟
The catcher tried to tag the runner but then turned around and the umpire signaled safe so why did he put the ball in his pocket and start celebrating? I was a catcher when played and it is pounded into your head that if you drop the third stake you throw the ball to first... I guess the weight of the moment gave them brain fog...Sad but they blew it.
First off, that was a ball, second of all, what was the cstcher thinking putting the ball in his back pocket?? I haven't laughed so hard like i have in this video lmao
Yea I'm surprised that no one is talking about this, not even in the video. This is a ball, touching the ground... the batter does not swing... but after replaying number of times it looks like the ref calls it a strike for some odd reason, and voice it loudly. This is where the batter starts to run and is missed by the catcher.
I bet the catcher was completely confused by the fact that he genuinely thought that it could not be a strike since it landed on the ground, didn't saw a swing, so thought, hey the ref called a strike, game is over. He never saw the ref calling the batter safe and no one in his team told him.
The ref is at least half responsible for his lack of judgement on the pitch and the very shy half gesture that he didn't repeat like an experienced ref would have been doing if he sees that he was not seen by the players.
What makes it more confusing, everyone seems to be wearing the same uniform lol
It's amazing how many people are confused by that. It's baseball. One team is at bat (they will have a bat or nothing if already on base, or be in the dugout) while the other is fielding (they have gloves). It's not like a fielder is going to 'get confused' and throw to a runner. Or a runner is going to 'get confused' and start fielding...
Red jerseys vs Red jerseys!? A few rules are not being followed.
For real who is the home team? they should get the red jersey
White pants vs grey pants. Not a lot of HS teams can afford home and away jerseys.
thought the same.

The catcher picked up the ball, looked at first then ran to the pitcher's mound to celebrate, while the other team kept running around the diamond. I think he's still has the ball in his glove.
It was in his back pocket.
As someone who played baseball for almost 30 years this was very difficult to watch 😶
@Jomboy Media is going to have a field day with this one!!!!😊
He already did.
I love that the coach/trainer was yelling at them to get back into the game and no one cared, you know future training days will be hard.
Regardless of the situation, it is obvious that the catcher did not tag the batter when he failed to catch the ball. I was never a catcher, but I always knew that if you drop it it's still fair unless you either tag the runner or throw it to the respective base.
I'm confused too. They all have the same colored top
Both teams are the Red Raiders, too.
Ridiculous that both teams are wearing red jerseys. C’mon, most sports have home and away jerseys… or a light and dark option…
The catcher knew he didn’t tag him and it was obvious he didn’t. It was like he thought putting the ball in his pocket and ignoring the umpire would nullify the fact that he didn’t tag the guy. I would love to know what the heck this catcher was thinking and also what the coach was thinking by arguing afterwards. What could he say to the umpire? “I didn’t teach my team the rules of the game so how dare you enforce them”?
The catcher looked over to 1st base and saw there was already a runner there.he assumed that the batter was automatically out but it doesn't apply when there is 2 outs.
Coach could have argued a few things:
• Catcher made the tag. Catcher did lurch forward. Wouldn't be the worst argument a coach has made.
• First was occupied. Coach didn't know the rule, and that's why he didn't teach his team.
• You should have verbally called no tag, it's not required, but you should have.
• I would like to argue that strike was a ball. Everyone go back. Next pitch please.
• There are a bunch of extra people on the field, including me.
• Play should have stopped because I thought I heard someone yell " CAR ! ".
• We would like a do-over.
That's a good learning lesson.
those are the rules man.
indeed.
-rick
There nothing confusing about it. The catcher has to throw to first to secure the out. Instead, the catcher runs to the mound to celebrate with his teammates. That can be considered an infield HR.
He even tries to tag the runner and then looks back at the ump who gives him the safe sign and he still started celebrating like an idiot. It's the catchers fault all the way.
@@CoutureThug 💯💯💯💯
Just a clarification, This is a Sectional championship. The New York State Championships haven't started . I believe regionals started today.
Both teams wearing red is a nightmare.
I remember watching a kickoff return from the back of the end zone. The kicking team started walking off the field after the punt returner let it go into the end zone. The ball bounced in the back of the end zone but never went out of bounds. A member of the receiving team picked it up and ran it back for like a 109 yard touchdown return. Only a couple of players on the kicking team noticed. Everyone else had their backs to the play or were off the field. It happens.

The catcher put the ball in his back pocket, big mistake, and the ump did give the safe sign when the runner made it to first.
This wasn’t a state Championship game. It was a Section 5 Final. Not a state final.
It's simple the catcher messed up, didn't do what he should have done.
The kids (10-11 year-olds) I coached were so fast that they would end up on 2nd base. A common play that's learned at that age.
That was wild. Never knew that.
Coach is yelling at the umpire. Not Umpires fault. Coach is supposed to educate the catcher on the whole dropped 3rd strike rule.
Coach later told the media that from his angle the umpire appeared to call an out, not safe. He apologized
Oh I assure you, at that age, the catcher knows the rules of the game. What you saw there was a young man who got too excited about what he saw coming and allowed himself to begin a celebration far too soon. His emotions ran wild and caused him to behave in a way he likely never did throughout the entire season. That's why training these kids emotionally as well as mentally and physically is just as important.

Good lord I only played Baseball when I was 9-10 years old and I even knew this, and I don't even watch baseball since then even as I was always into Football.
Damn I can't believe the catcher didn't remember to tag the runner! Although to me it didn't look like he swung at all, doesn't the bat have to cross the front of the plate for it to be considered a swing?
Ahh got it! Thanks, learned something new!
Correction: The runners were on 1st and 2nd. Doesn't change the outcome but, as this play shows, attention to detail is important.
The commentator stated "...indicate runners on second and third, with first base open. This is important". This is not important: because on dropped third strike, the batter becomes a runner if first base is open OR THERE ARE TWO OUTS.
I do believe the catcher thought this was important, as it looked like they were going to make a throw to 1st, then motioned to 1st (as if realizing a runner still occupying 1st) then pocketed the ball and went to celebrate.
There was not a runner on first, runners were on 2nd & 3rd base no runner at 1st base

Your analysis is incorrect in several spots but ultimately tells the story.
1. There were two outs with runners on first and second, although the drop third still applies.
2. The batter didn’t swing, but it was a called strike.
3. This was a sectional championship, not a state championship.
Why let a few facts get in the way. Lol

I don't live fair from the losing team town. This isn't a state championship but a sectional championship. The state is based in is divided into different sections, with this game being in a section 5, in class B1.
The dropped third strike rule in baseball is when a hitter strikes out, whether swinging or looking, but the catcher fails to catch the pitch in the air. If the ball hits the ground on a third strike, the hitter is permitted to run to first base.
At least no parents rushed the field and started fights.

Oh man that sucks.
Let me give you the real breakdown
There was two strikes on the batter with 2 runners on and 2 outs. There was no swing and miss, just a called strike 3 on what looked like a ball. The catcher drops the pitch and then tries to tag the runner and misses then looks back at the ump who clearly calls the guy safe which means you didn't tag him and he's not out. Then instead of throwing to first to complete the out he goes to celebrate like a dummy. And while jes celebrating with the ball in his glove everyone scores and they lose.😂
wrong--he put the BB in his back pocket--pay attention
Trying to give people the "real breakdown" while getting the recap wrong. 😂 GREAT JOB.
Never played baseball and even i know that if that ball hits the dirt friggin go for it like my gym teacher in like 5th grade said the worst thing that could happen is u run for no reason but to basically always run if that ball is loose 😅
There was not a swing and a miss. It was a called strike (even though it was low and inside).
Bad coaching. My old football coach would having us do suicide drills til we passed out after a mishap like that.
That’s a f-ed up way to lose a game. Especially a title game and that third called strike wasn’t close to the strike zone at all.
How is no one pointing this out. It wasn't even close, in the dirt and like a foot inside.
Hard to tell because the ump is blocking the angle, but don't forget it's where the ball crosses the plate, not where the catcher catches it.

@@t_ylr I'm not talking about the esoteric rule. I'm talking about what the commentator claimed happened on the video. He didn't even watch it.
There are other options on RUclips where the person analyzing it gets it right. In one of them, you see an outfielder drop an easy fly ball and the pitcher drop a pop up in the same inning. The team that lost had a 5 - 1 lead going into this inning.

Runners were on 1st and 2nd and it's not important.
