What I don't understand, is EVERY SINGLE TIME there are penalties on both teams, they offset and replay down. Why wasn't this the case here? Both teams had penalties.

It is, but the clock hit 0:00. The game can only be extended due to a defensive penalty. A replayed down due to offsetting penalties is not the same thing.

@@DatHaji I should've clarified the type of penalty I'm referring to (the one committed by the offense vs. the defense). Read subsection 2 of that rule. Because this was a forward lateral and the illegal participation penalty happened after that, their "illegal participation" penalty becomes an unsportsmanlike dead-ball penalty, which would not extend the game.
Also, we could both be wrong. The refs may have considered the illegal participation penalty moot because both teams were guilty of the offense.
illegal forward pass is a loss of down penalty. Therefore it does not extend the period, even with offsetting fouls.

The funny part of this was, Ball State coaches were trying to use the "We ran on the field so you have to blow the play dead" defense. Same thing Stanford tried vs Cal in 1982. But in the end, there had been an illegal forward pass prior to that. Too bad. This was awesome. And yes, I did go and watch the whole play first, as Jomboy instructed. I vaguely remembered it from when it happened, but wanted to see it again, first.
If that's how the rule actually works, then that's stupid. You would just run onto the field any time the opponent breaks through the secondary.

@@kotukuwhakapiko467 only one forward pass is allowed per play. Normally the quarterback is the one who does the forward pass. So if you want to extend the play you either have to run the ball or pass it to the sides or backwards

Agree it's a forward pass but it's closer than it looks because what matters is where the ball is, not where the player is. The passer's back foot in on the 32 and the ball is received at the 34, but the ball is actually released a lot closer to the 34 the way he's standing sideways and using his right arm.

From that overhead angle, the ball will look closer to the 35 yard line, but unless it was directly to the side, it's misleading. It was a straight overhand throw though, not a sidearm thrown from 2 yards ahead of his back foot.

@@Takashiylverta eh first pass can be forward regardless of where line of scrimmage is. Every pass after that has to be laterally backward in order for the play to stay alive. Now vice versa if all of the first plays are all laterals behind the line of scrimmage and the plays all stay behind the line of scrimmage.... Than technically they should be able to throw one forward pass.... And then continue lateral passes legally if they were lucky enough to keep going lol. This play in itself though is insanely rare.

First I was amazed they managed to take the W. Then I was amazed at the ability of Refs to find the problems to that small of a degree in the middle of all the madness. Intensely impressive, even if they don't always get it right. There's definitely a reason they have their job.

Just one correction. There was no change of possession. What you had was backward passes. To have a change of possession the other team would have to get the ball-ie punt, fumble ect.
I think he knows exactly what he's saying. Just a change of possession between players. Not a standard change of possession in a game. Like a literal who possesses the ball.
