BIG MISTAKE IN GETTING AN HR Degree. Don't make the mistake my daughter made. She got a college degree in Human Resources. While in college she got an HR job with a major retailer, worked there for two years. Decided to try something other than retail. Landed a job with a manufacturing company. When she accepted the job at the manufacturing company she had no knowledge of her employment being short lived. They hired her to fill the position of a woman that quit. This woman quit because her division was being closed and she would be unemployed. My daughter was not aware of this closing. After six months she was forced to resign. She's been unemployed for six months. She has student loans and no job. She has sent almost 100 resumes to prospective employers. Had only a few interviews. Early on, at great expense we had her resume professionally re-written.It made no difference. Employers want on average 5 years experience. How do you get 5 years of experience if you can't get a job? This is not the fault of the employers it's our fault for not doing the proper research about what potentially can go wrong after graduating. If only she had pursued a degree that gave her the necessary experience while in college to obtain a job upon graduating without the on the job training. We really screwed up! Do your career research before getting into debt! Suggestions anyone!

I'm not faulting the employers. No one said or even suggested she would need 5 yrs experience. How are you supposed to know this? The college was only interested in money, not my daughter or her future. In retrospect she would have chosen a career that gave her the necessary experience in college to obtain a job. Not learn this after graduation.

Best advice would have been to search for programs with internships in the course, this goes for any career in business and can really help acquire the hours. The problem isn't with human resources specifically, most Art and B.A degrees should involve some hands on internship work to help you get started.
Best advice would be to apply for a generic position in a company you would like to work for and understand their business model while making connections. This way you can include experience and relationships with employees and an understanding of the business on your resume. Nobody can really compete with that, seeing as it's the whole point of the job.
Will take a few months, but now you don't have to struggle with employees looking down on you for being a fresh faced twenty-sum year old handling their personal matters.

I went to Cambridge and got a 1st in Electrical Engineering. I did my MBA at Harvard and my JD at Harvard. Most HR Business Partners are waste of money. I want to eliminate 33% of HR workers.
