  • This morning in breaking news, Sanctuary AI one of the leading humanoid bot companies, just announced a blockbuster partnership with Magna International - one of the largest companies in the automotive supply sector.
    And this partnership is wide ranging. Not only is Manga providing additional investment, they will also deploy Sanctuary’s Phoenix robots in their manufacturing operations and they will also explore manufacturing of the bots themselves.

    It is worth noting that Fisker using Magna was absolutely the right choice for them. Eventually, they would have built the vehicles themselves but initially having Magna do it would get them into the market, earning money, far sooner than others who try to do it themselves from the get-go. The issues with Fisker were not due to poor build quality at Magna, rather it was software built by Fisker and perhaps design flaws. Sanctuary has hit a home run with this partnership. Aside from Tesla they will be the only humanoid robotics company that can really scale and take a huge first-mover advantage (along with Tesla hopefully).

      That's not Magna's problem. Fisker and to a lesser extent Jaguar made the mistakes, not Magna. Do you know that Magna manufactured the G-Class for Mercedes for decades now? Do you think Mercedes would stick with Magna for a car that's sold for well above $100k if they weren't happy?

    To speed up the software maybe they need to do something like that used in aviation where they have a foreground and a background loop running in parallel where the foreground controls the things that need fast responses while the background loop handles things that can wait half second or so to process rather than trying to do it all in one loop.
    You might Google rate monotonic scheduling.

    Do you think Sanctuary's approach of breaking tasks down to the atomic level, training the AI each "micro task" and then putting them together into larger tasks is why their bot can "think" faster and thereby execute the task faster?

    In the press release, I don't see indication of Magna 'producing' robots, but just using Sanctuary AI's robots in their business endeavors -- like BMW's recent agreement with Figure AI. Until someone announces production at scale, humanoid robotics development will be at prototype and experimental scale. Magna could be this production company, but not yet according to this announcement.

    • @harrydymond4488
      @harrydymond4488 Месяц назад

      No, build quality was not a problem. Pretty much all reviews I saw/read said that build quality was good. The problem was terrible management at Fisker - they forgot that once the cars come out of the factory at Magna in Austria, they have to be moved from said factory to wherever the customer is! This is not an exaggeration - they literally did not plan on how to deliver the built cars to their customers. There were also issues with the software (which was 100% down to Fisker), but those were being fixed (although perhaps too slowly).

    • @ThomasTomiczek
      @ThomasTomiczek Месяц назад +8

      Does not matter. Read between the lines. Magna is a major car part supplier - which is a MAJOR trouble with electric cars coming. They invest and deploy but - most importantly - WILL BUILD the robot. it is not about them using them - this is more them trying to get a new business field so that they are not stuck (only) with car parts. They are good in building things - the robot looks like it needs some product engineers and a production company to step in. Tesla does not need - the Optimus is from the ground up designed for cheap mass production and - cough - Tesla has the manufacturing capacity.

  • @AS-cd5wf

    “And then 66 years after that there was a man on the Moon!”
    And soon after that the predictions of Lunar cities by the year 2000 started. Predictions fail both ways. There is also a major difference between doing tasks and doing “useful work”.
    This Sanctuary news is great and an important step but let’s not go down the “naysayers are silenced” rhetorical route. A certain amount of skepticism in the face of the various levels of hype (from slightly exaggerated optimism to complete delirium) out there is perfectly justified.

  • @jacksouthern7929

    What is the advantage in regards to cost with Tesla mfg their own bots versus using a third party (Magna)?

    • @colinkeizer7353
      @colinkeizer7353 Месяц назад

      Integration of software and hardware operations across multiple platforms like the robot systems and the factory systems and the warehouse systems is 'probably' cleaner and easier and less expensive at Tesla, where the same engineers who originally created all the software and many of the machines and most of the operational procedures will be adding the new features like humanoid robots pulling necessary parts from warehouse inventory, moving it to shipping, then loading dock, then picking it up at the factory receiving dock, moving it to quality assurance, then to production and installing it. I'm totally hoping we see a demonstration of something like this before Christmas. You can bet Sanctuary and Magna and Accenture want to succeed in performing and demonstrating this and far more complex interoperability. It will probably cost more money and more time and more work for them to do so, compared with Tesla.

    • @colinkeizer7353
      @colinkeizer7353 Месяц назад

      For those who raise the next obvious question, "How does this help Tesla sell Optimus to OTHER manufacturers," consider the opportunities for Tesla to sell its FACTORY operating system to any company that purchases Optimus and wants to gain additional advantages by integrating humanoid robots with THEIR factory and warehouse systems. Yes, engineers from Tesla might consult to integrate Optimus with the new owner's systems, but the package deal of robots PLUS factory operating system PLUS warehouse system all fully integrated and interoperable . . . strong business case. Is it stronger than Sanctuary/Accenture/Magna? Time will tell us, perhaps.

    • @colinkeizer7353
      @colinkeizer7353 Месяц назад

      Expect to see a spectrum from companies just adding a few 'bots to companies working to adapt to dozens of 'bots to companies adding hundreds of 'bots into their existing systems to companies re-engineering their entire factory plus warehouse complex to operate at the best efficiency Tesla or other 'bot companies can provide.

      Oh holyau, Tesla has no catching up to do when they are in the lead. Laying low for now is their strategy as they can, based on no need to raise capital! Look at all the wires hanging everywhere on these robots. Tesla already uses NO BACK PACK, and keeps the wires INSIDE the bots! A much more refined product! When you are in the lead, it is much better to keep a low profile when everyone is looking to you for their roadmap to success. Let them figure it out on their own!

    IMO, there are many tasks that are done by humans where having legs, feet etc. are a hindrance to efficiency. One example task is sorting on an assembly line that requires only mechanics from the waist up. Hands, arms, fingers and eyes are doing the work. If an increase in speed of sorting is required the quick (stop-start), ( left-right ), ( up-down ) motions need a firm base to keep balance and accuracy. The energy and compute to hold its position on legs and feet is forfeited simply because of its unsteady anchorage. Wheels or treads can still allow mobility and be retracted within its battery storing pedestal . Making all robots in humanoid form will have some drawbacks and added cost. You may end up with a “bot of all trades, master of none.”

    Making robot hardware is not going to be hard. The most difficult mechanical part is an actuator. There will be a dozen credible robot makers in China, several in Europe (besides Magna), several in US. The ‘brain’ is either NVIDIA or a Chinese GPU tailored for robotics. The software is NVIDIA or in-house or 3d party (so lots of sources with different business models). Humanoid robots will be a really dynamic business with no dominant players for years because development will be so rapid (like LLM and OpenAI/etc is today). Don’t see where TSLA has a moat or a tech advantage over the rest of industry. TSLA will be strong, but not like BEVs where there was no competition at the start.

      @@johnyaya9225 and @andrasbiro3007 - I agree that Tesla has proven manufacturing excellence. However, of all the OEMs and other companies that have announced partnerships with robotics companies, Magna is by far the most capable. Magna has decades of worldwide experience designing and manufacturing components all the way up the automotive supply chain. They even design/build entire electric vehicles.
      Designing a bot for easy assembly and cost-efficient manufacture is well within their wheelhouse. They have a deep understanding of robotics, manufacturing process design, and manufacturing ramp-up, so they have know bot use cases and design constraints. With a strong AI software partner, they will deliver compelling and highly capable bots. They also have close relationships with many OEMs which gives them access to parts of market that are hostile to Tesla.
      The TAM for bots is huge, so I don't think "competition" will be a real issue for several years. They will certainly push Tesla to excel, which will motivate Musk and team to knock it out of the park.
