Bought a Lamy Safari from an unauthorized dealer, like Amazon ( amzn.to/2R2jGnT ) or Ebay? You probably got a great price, but you might have concerns that your new fountain pen is a fake. Counterfeit Lamy Safari pens are a real thing, and a real problem (though they are less prevalent than knock-off Lamy Al-Stars).
Here are a number of qualities and attributes to look for in order to tell if your Lamy Safari fountain pen is real or not. These aren't foolproof, but if you look at them in combination with one another, you should be able to get a good idea or if your pen is real or a knock-off.

You all probably dont care but does someone know of a method to get back into an instagram account??
I somehow forgot the login password. I would love any help you can give me!
@Camilo Allen Instablaster ;)
I’m really bummed 😕I bought my first Lamy online and today that I received it I saw it was a counterfeit.
this is great timing, i just ordered one and it is coming tomorrow! i hope it's not a fake
It was fake?
Thank you for this. I just received my first Lamy Safari pen from Amazon. I don’t have an original to compare it to. I am waiting for to receive the converter so I can check to see if it has blue ink in it; I don’t trust myself to remove the nib. It looks like when I tighten it that the barrel and nib are almost lined up with the body; it isn’t perfect, but close. I hope this doesn’t mean it’s fake. The cap clicks (and not) the way you stated it should.
There is a very light, almost imperceptible seam on one side of the body. With a loop, I can view an extremely light seam near the window on the flat side that does not have the Lamy logo on it. The seam is only noticeable between the window and the rubber washer on one side of the window. The other side of the window does not have a seam.
I thought there was a something about the cross on the cap and the depth of the cross that could indicate a fake. But since I can’t compare it to a real one, it’s hard to see if it is indented enough.
So far, mostly everything checks out on mine, but I am concerned about: 1. The slightly offset (hardly noticeable) lineup of the body, barrel and nib; 2. The imperceptible (if somewhat short) seam on the flat side opposite the Lamy logo between the window and the rubber washer; 3. I wish I could see a fake and a real Lamy up close side-by-side so that I would have a better idea of what a fake versus real Lamy logo and cross look like. 4. The ink is something I will check later.
My Lamy came with the dark gray outer cardboard box that you showed, with an additional light gray, sort of metallic looking Lamy box, inside the dark gray box. It did not have a dark gray piece of paper that matched the dark gray outer box.
My Lamy has a completely different box, but the pen itself has all you mentioned.
If it's in like a metal container, that's fine too
@@howtheturntables1600 It's a grey cardboard box.
@@NuvolaRoss you're fine
Mine too. Bought my first fountaint pen. Came in a greg/black box. Not gonna lie, I was a little worried, but i saw some videos and every info tends to confirm that my Lamy is original. Hoping for the best hahah
Thank you. Excellent information.
Hi, I recently bought the new savannah green Lamy safari medium nib from the blick art store. And the purchased another from Amazon the charcoal one fine nib. I saw your video and the Amazon one seem legit. Only concerned was the nib. they have name printed. Only difference is that the medium nib feels like it was carved in, engraved lines. And the fine nib doesn’t have engraved, just printed on. Can the nibs also be fake?
Anyone know if the CP1 is supposed to have that cardboard ring when new?
Hi! I received mine last week and the only difference it has from your pointers is that it came with a Lamy converter. Thoughts?
Typically the converter would not be included with the safari but some sellers could add it to make their offering more attractive. If the converter is legit and has a red top (z28) Id guess you are good
I recently got mine in F but it has ink flow issues
Thank you. I have a follow up question. It has to do with the converter. How can you tell a genuine Z 28 converter from a fake one?
I'd have to look into this more. It's rather difficult to tell
Thank you so much
Some of sellers that I found it's also inlclude manual paper that explain how to use the catridge, is it a problem?
Not at all. You will sometimes see a grey and white folded Lamy manual.
In an online store, I purchased a Lamy Safari Special Edition 2021. All of the Real features of Lamy you stated in the video are there, however the ink window is slightly off (meaning that even after tightening the screw on the threading part, it still does not line up perfectly).
When I also compared it to my sister's Lamy Limited Edition 2016, I noticed that the body pen of the 2021 is somewhat thicker than the 2016..
Should I be worried? :(
Hey there! Just curious if you got it changed or found more info on it ?
good review
I got my lamy safari fountain pen from ebay and it has all you mentioned
Is it necessary to get that box? I got mine in a smaller silver box, the same silver like that of their ink boxes.
No it’s not. The boxes vary.
I just received my Lamy Vista. Everything checks out as authentic. A few weeks back I bought a fake Lamy knockoff from Five Below for $3.50 (2 pens in pack). I was surprised how good the fake ones performed compared to the authentic so I had to find this video to compare.
The fake ones aren’t bad pens usually. (In my limited experience)
I feel like everything is legitimate accept for the nib. I think its damaged or something
My lamy safari petrol came with a converter and it was shipped with a blue black converter outside of the pen and its nib does not come off easily and it was priced at 9.23 usd or 511 php but it does have all of the good indications like the numbers for the mold and stuff, Do you guys think its fake?
It is
The fact one has to worry these days about receiving a fake of a 15 Euro pen is very worrying.
P.s: Do you know if it is possible to replace the hard-plastic O-ring that holds the clip on the Safari. Where would I get a new one? My old Safari I used at school way back is missing it.
I believe the o-ring is made into the feed and not really replaceable. It’s not really an o ring anyway, to my knowledge. Kind of a harder rubber material.
@@unsharpen Yes, its hard plastic, but it’s definitely replaceable. The only replacement I’ve seen sold was on eBay and for a 3-pack it was like 10 bucks, but that’s obviously not worth it. Might actually be cheaper to just buy some old, beat up Safari and salvage the part from that. Or I could write Lamy and see what happens...
@@Olumin37 Did you ever write Lamy or find a replacement? I've just ordered my first for me and a co-worker and really don't want to let them down.
@@giggle_tush708 I didn’t because I think they would either charge for the part of for shipping, the pen is well over a decade old after all. It’s not worth the trouble for me. I ended up salvaging the part from another pen.
Hi, I replaced the plastic '0' ring with a similar '0 'ring made of rubber holds the cap well enough get one from a hard ware store .
Informative video but it would be great if you could have a fake one alongside for comparisons.
Thank u anyway.
Thanks , how do you stored it? Standing, laying, upside down?
On its side
@@unsharpen thank you !!
Greetings and thank you for this information. Question- Does this hold true for a Lamy Vista also?
Yes, it should. For example the refill it ships with, etc. The Vista will always be clear, glossy plastic. Was there something specific?
@@unsharpen Thank you for the speedy response. Yes. Amazon has what appears to be a GREAT deal on Vista Fine nib pens. But, price seems to be too good to be true for a genuine Lamy. So I am leery.
the vista is a safari, they were originally sold as the Lamy safari clear/ safari vista, I can't remember when it became its own pen though
i have order this and it's coming next week, and it sells for 10$, i hope it's not fake
I have this all features, but i bought mine for $10 and it's New old stock, I'm not satisfied if it's really authentic
By the way, this and your other video about the Al Star do not show up in my subscriptions, no matter how often I refresh, re-subscribe or re-enable notifications. Your previous videos show up just fine however. Thought you might like to know...
Thanks for the heads up! Conducting some tests.
On that note, How did you find these? In your feed?
@@unsharpen They showed up on my RUclips Homepage, yes.
All went well in your list except the ink stain and the blue ink in the set i ordered..so i am guessing i got a very good dupe
Could be that the feed and nib dupes but the body is orignal you could check by searching for doodlebud's video
@@LlEcAro-xt5bt oh, so it's possible to happen that way? Thanks!🙏
The counterfeit i got writes as well as my original Lamy. Even the build quality is flawless
Is it ok of the Germany imprint on the body is on the other side? My other pens have it on the right side, while the newest one i bought has it on the left side. And the cap cross isnt totally aligned like my other lamy safari pens. Should i be concerned?
Sounds ok. There are minor variations from one generation to the next and cap cross alignment is not a factor that I’ve heard of before.
I'm a little confused when you said the click when you post? Because on my two safari's it makes more of a pop rather than a click but that only happens whenever I post it really deeply if I just slide it on there's no noise.
Something I also found with counterfeit safari's is that they come with a free Z28 converter without a blue ink cartridge, fake safari's are also limited to EF and Fine nibs only, and a big indicator of a fake safari is they're being sold in old special edition finishes.
Gmund is one syllable
We get different packaging in the UK.
In Portugal they sell in sealed Blister packages and no longer have the cardboard ring because the refill is not inside the pen.
I bought my Lamy Safari online and it came with a gift box of some sort that included an ink bottle, cartridges, the pen and a converter. The box said “not just a pen” on the top and was colored gray.
On the pen itself though the window and grip did not line up and once the barrel is screwed on tightly, a part of the ‘wing’ can be seen through the little window. It writes a tiny bit scratchy too.
I’ll also add that it didn’t come with a manual the like, it was just the pen and accessories inside. Not even a barcode can be found.
I’m pretty sure it’s a fake by now, what a bummer.
Yea, sounds off from what I’d expect. Sorry to hear that
My lamy safari has a slight misallignment of the nib and the body (they arent alligned in a straight line even when its fully screwed in) But it came with a nice black box with converter cartridge and warranty card. The seller in amazon is also connected to the official Lamy India website.
Is it common for the safaris to have that slight misallignemnt of the body and nib?
No it’s not. And the safari isn’t sold with a converter except in special edition kits I believe
@@unsharpen It's an Umbra Lamy safari (Matte black body, black nib and clip) Writes very smooth like a normal Lamy. I got it at a discount with converter included for whats equal to around 20$ It still comes with a warranty card I don't know if counterfeits come with a real warranty card though.
@@unsharpen update: The two parts now align with each other 💀
There used to be like a -3° noticeable misalignment but now the ink window is correctly aligned?
I have a fake one that says hero on the side it came with 24 cartridges for 3 bucks 😅
EDIT: Nvm, my fingernail was sharp enough to remove it. But, I don't see any blue ink residue?
EDIT 2: I flushed it just now, I was a bit skeptical at first because I saw no blue ink when flushing it in water. But I finally saw that blue ink when I dried it up with tissue. :D
I got my first safari today. I'm trying to remove the nib using tape, but its not sticky enough. My fingernails are not long enough to pull it out on the small gaps, and my hand seems to be slippery. Any other ways to remove the nib without any special tools?
I will stick to dealers and not Amazon for my more expensive pens.
Here's a simple test : fill a new lamy with red ink the first time around, if it writes in purple, its likely real since lamy tests all there pens once with blue one still in them, never heard of a fake going that far
Or you could soak them I guess
I think I got a fake one cause it came with a converter but I Just found out it’s real thanks to this video
Got the three “2021 Candy colored Safaris” from Amazon, they are fake. 😡
How do you know it's fake?
I just bought the Savannah green one from Amazon so now you have me worried
These are so inexpensive, why would they even bother faking them?
Because there are Chinese factories that can make them for even cheaper.
Some knockoffs are quite good, too, but it's pretty much a gamble since you have to test each pen and see which works well, and in Asian markets they go for as low as 2 USD, so if they sell them as originals you can see why bootleg manufacturers fake them.
@@dzevadbayraktar322 Well if you can make a fake for 2 or 3 dollars and sell that on amazon for 20, that's quite worth it, and if you think about it, safari's are the perfect pen to fake since many people buy it as their first pen and won't be able to recognize that it's not the real deal. I've never gotten a fake safari (knock on wood) but I have gotten a fake al star ordering from amazon so I know they do exist.
Even the real one is not that great, lol
Ha, for each his/her own!
I love my lamy pens...specifically the al-stars. I’m a leftie and these are by far the smoothest pens for me. I only use EF though
