    Before you start messing with the nib, test a different ink and paper first. Some pen, ink and paper combos just don't go well together even when there is nothing wrong with the pen itself.

    The narrator is phenomenal. I don’t know if she’s a JetPens employee or dedicated voice actor, but she’s missing her calling if she doesn’t do this professionally. Clean, crisp pronunciation and enunciation without being harsh. Great intonation and inflection with (thank god) no up-speak. I could listen to her all day.

    I purchased the first of two Lamy 2000 fountain pens in January 2020. While cleaning it, it rolled off my countertop onto the floor nib first. Needless to say I was disappointed that it no longer wrote once the nib hit paper. I had planned to send it off for repair but my attention became focused on COVID-19 and my overall health. Today, on 5/29/2023, I came across this video which triggered the memory of the damaged pen, so I took it out and started to work on it following the instructions in this video. I discovered the tines were splayed and misaligned. I was able to repair the nib entirely on my own. Great instructions! Thanks JetPens!

    I do own a Pilot Parallel fountain pen, and it comes with a thin dark plastic sheet that is used to clean in between the parallel nibs of the pen. I actually tried the thin plastic sheet to clean the nib slit of my Monami Olika fountain pen while cleaning it, and the sheet worked as well in removing excess ink from the nib. 😊

    A common nail polishing board (the one that has 3 sections and 2 are for buffing) works much better than the paper bag. The paper bag can actually cause plugging and it's a harsher surface than a polishing/buffing board. Voice of experience here... 😁

      Awk. Uncomfortable flashback to making a left-handed tip out of a right-handed reed nib. Such was what it was like to be a left-handed calligrapher in the 1970s.
      Emory boards do work well, but only the fine grades. Finishing the nibs required fine jeweler's rouge. Dozen's of Speedball C-3 nibs died to bring you this info.

    • @paulherman5822
      @paulherman5822 3 года назад +10

      @@chuckhainsworth4801 Exactly. The fine ones that are mainly for buffing. Equally as fine a grit as used for polishing metal. Around 12000 grit, the same ones that are available at Sally Beauty Supply. Gentle enough to smooth, without removing too much metal. I've fixed plenty of vintage nibs with one, and they're cheaper than what gets sold by fountain pen places. 😁

    • @paulherman5822
      @paulherman5822 3 года назад +4

      @@juliam.5810 All really depends on what the nib might need. I have vintage pens, on top of more modern pens, and some vintage tipping is quite small (especially seems to be the case for Sheaffer.) Usually, though, it's the finest, more of a buffer than for removing material. I do suggest checking the alignment, first. Might be just that, instead of being pitted or rough.
      And some vintage have needed nothing, and I don't buy restored. 70+ years of "getting it just right," I bet. 😉

    IT WORKED!!! I'm so happy my pen is working! I tried soaking it in water previously but still nothing. Watching this, I was able to see my tines were jacked up from pushing down so hard out of frustration to get it to flow. I did the front and back pressing, as suggested, soaked it again, AND I blew canned air into the inside and lightly from the side of each tine. Reinserted the ink cartridge and the first time in MONTHS it finally works! If case you can't tell, I'm so excited and thankful you took the time to make this educational video. Thank you!

    I got a pen from Aliexpress and it worked fine except for 2 minor issues. One it was scratching the paper. What I did was polishing the nib with sandpaper. I took a piece of 800 grit sandpaper and rubbed it on a polishing stone till it felt smooth like silk. Then holding the pen in the position I would hold when I am writing, I drew a couple of 8s with gentle pressure. The nib is now smooth. The other issue was that every time I started writing It laid thick ink and gradually became dryer till it started skipping. The groove alignment trick worked! Thank you pen doctor!

    Great video! I had a small issue with a Lanxivi Yongsheng 3008 Piston Fountain Pen EF -- the pen was skipping and felt a little scratchy and gummy. I just got this pen a week ago, and I run Platinum Carbon Black in it. I know that can dry out, and it's hard to clean if it does, so I just ran the tip of the nib under a trickle of cold water. I gently blotted the water away and tried writing again. After a few very watery words, the smooth flow was restored. Worst case, I could have removed the nib/feed section and given it a nice jacuzzi bath with a drop or two of Dawn dish detergent in my ultrasonic cleaner. One or two cycles will usually clear out anything. I have a bunch of air pistons, so a good flush with clean water gets rid of any residual Dawn.
    So far it's working, and I love writing with a fountain pen now!

It turned out the smaller channel was being blocked by plastic residue the factory didn't clean out. The residue was actually attached. I had to scrape it clean with a very small sewing needle tip.

    I have successfully used a Gatco 60016 Tri-Seps Serrated Edge and Point Sharpener
    To smooth a nib to smooth a scratchy nib tip off. Used it with ink in the pen as a lubricant. Surface of the sharpener feels smooth to touch but sharpens metal.

    You guys are the king's/queen's of stationery. Where can I buy that rubber grip you're using. That's a must have in my collection. My Sailor mannen pen is stuck and I cannot refill my pen now. *Cries*

    Hi, my problem was that I have a refillable fountain pen and after getting the pen I was having trouble with ink flow.
    When ever I try to write with the pen it wouldn’t work, no matter how many times I’d empty and fill it back up. Your tips seems to help for now. If I’ve have that problem again I may have to do the tip again or rethink on using this pen.

    Excellent video, very helpful and you are right to emphasise on patience and not hurrying through the steps. What is the best way to clear the gap between the 2 tines if there are paper fibres clogged up? I use the edge of a used shaving blade (remember the single blade razor?). Is there a better way to do it?
    Again, thanks for an excellent video.

      We're glad you enjoyed the video! What you're doing already works well for removing paper fibers. Any thin metal surface does the job.

    I should have looked at my nib with the loupe much sooner - I have one here! Turns out there's a manufacturing flaw, a pit in the tip. Well no wonder that pen never worked well, and never broke in. Now I'll know to inspect them asap if they don't write well so I can contact you next time.

    Well, my dad dropped his pen and both the tines are bent like a bird's beak right now. This gave me some confidence andI'm going to try to fix it. Wish me luck. :P
    P.S.: It doesn't write at all right now so don't worry XD

      This video is just for very basic tunning/fixing, for a more "especialized" way of fixing your dad's pen better look for Matt Armstrong's channel "The Pen Habit". Damn shame Matt threw the towel, he is my hero as I've adjusted a lot of my pens thanks to his videos, many of them got a second very deserved life. Regards.

      Just buy a new nib, or a new pen, if it's cheap. Even if you make it work for a while, that nib is shot.

    super helpful, as I'm experiencing a lot of issues with a new pen (also relatively new to the world of fountain pens). How appropriate that you're using a Kaweco sport, the exact same pen giving me trouble. I've been writing with a Lamy safari, Lamy 2000 and two older pens my mom gave me (her basic school pens from the 70's made by Sheaffer and Parker). None of them give me the problems my Kaweco AL Sport is giving me (brand new pen).

    You can also try to remove the nib and the feed from the section slightly to make ink flow less axessive. Cheers.
