- Can't figure out which Lamy fountain pen converter you need? The decision is easier than you think.
If you want something red and you have a Safari or Vista, get the Z24 or Z28 ( amzn.to/2GhaAAj ).
If you want something that fits any Lamy fountain pen, get a Z26 or Z27 ( amzn.to/2DZ9dnn ).
Fountain pen shops will typical sell these by the new names (Z28 and Z27) while Amazon sells them with the older names (Z24 and Z26).

One additional BIG difference between the Z24 and Z28 (the old and new reds), the really important difference: the Z24 had a wide tip (the end you push into the nib unit), as wide as the barrels width, the tip being actually part of the barrel. This was fitting almost exclusively the Safaris and Al Stars as only these had their nib units wide enough to fit the Z24. The Z26 and Z27 has a step down at the tip fitting narrower nib units like the ST and CP1, and the rest of their fountain pens, but are missing the side stops. The Z28 is actually a combination of the Z26 / Z27 and the Z24: it has the narrower tip fitting all the fountain pens but also has the side stops for the Safaris and Al Stars. The Z24 written on the packaging does not mean the same converter with the old name, but that the seller mixed up the packaging and the converter. Just search "Lamy Z24 Z28" on any image search and you will find pictures with the two converters side by side making this difference very visible.
@@unsharpen Well, I have to somewhat correct myself. I tried the Z28 right now in the Lamy ST and the tip fits perfectly in the nib unit (not possible with the Z24), however the slim barrel does not fit over the stops. So it does not work with my older Lamy ST (unmarked nib). I can't say for other models because I only have Safaris and Al Stars so far beside the ST. I still can imagine it to fit very well in a wider body pen like the Studio or Aion. Functionally I experienced no difference so far between the two converters, I have them both on separate Al Stars.
The posts are there to gently lock it into the safari. Less chance of the cartridge getting sloppy in the back, and a cleaner ink change/refill.
Exactly what I was looking for, thanks bud
I bought a Lamy Z28 Converter for my Lamy Safari the other day. It fits the AL-Star , Nexx, Nexx M and Aion too. Actually every Lamy fountain pen that isn't as slim as the CP1 and similar fountain pens.
A Lamy Nexx M with the Standard Converter is just fine for example. You can also refill a cleaned cartridge with a syringe and blunt needle. That works too.
I didn't realize there was a black version; thanks Sal. 👍
Woohoo thanks for the video brother been looking for this for a while now , cheers!
Thanks my guy just picked up some safaris and this video is super helpful for those new to fountain pens.
Nice review. Simple yet effective in describing the differences.
The way it should be.
I bought a 5-pack of Z24, but I think I will replace them with Z28 on the long-run, to open my possibilities and also have a better vacuum system.
Thank you for this video , just bought the Lamy Safari 🙋🏻♀️ and needed some wisdom !
Thank you for taking the time and making this informative video.
I was looking to buy the z27 when I remembered i had an old one for a Visconti Rembrandt fountain pen. Saved me alot of hassle!
thank you, Lamy makes it bloody confusing I must say, with the model number changes. Z27 it is, for everything !
That was very helpful! Thank you
You're welcome!
The Z28 has a better piston mechanism. Its suppose to be smoother.
Now, I'm so confused. I saw few forums said that Monami Olika compatible with lamy z27. The questions are, does it true or false and what are the alternative of lamy z27 since I can't found it nearby my place.
Extremely helpful, thank you!!
How can I know which Lamy Safari I have? I mean I bought I bought it before covid and completely forgot about it. How can I know which model I have please?
I've had the issue with the z26/z27 not fitting properly in all my safari and al-star models, and slipping out.
Helpful video of course .. but you did not explain why the posts exist on the red converter, which kinda is a bit incomplete. I think it helps lock in place the converter to the safaris and AL Stars and you have to orient it properly when fitting. Cheers.
Thanks for the note!
Thanks for this clarification video!
Very helpful, not too long. Thx o/
Thank you! Appreciate you looking into it :)
i bought a pack of universal converters and they ended up sending me the wrong thing. it was a 5 pack of the new z28 converters and i got them for like $5 so i kept my mouth shut.
Thanks Sal, for clearing that up. .....So what I think you are saying here is that these converters will fit in LX as well? Z24/28. & Z27 ? Those crazy kids at Lamy trying to confuse us. I have lots of fountain pens but I'm new to Lamy.
Very helpful, thanks!
I recently bought Lamy Safari Aquamarine, the ink indicator is still black (i use Black) with z24 converter.. how can i easily see if the ink is about to be gone? Coz when i cannot write but the z24 still show black color. i tried to view about 20 videos but did not see the advice.. thanks..
thanks for taking the time to do this but you need to do an update. My converters have a wide neck, genuine lamy and dont fit studio etc.
that's the old z24
Perfect, thank you!
Can you try to fit the z27 to a Monami Olika pen?
the 24 also fits on the Lamy nexx
Thx. I needed this!
thank you so much for this information! saved my day!
Useful video
Thank you for sharing
Thanks so much! Great explanation!
I think the posts are for refilling the pen through the nib so it doesn’t just spin.
Could the guideposts on z28 act as a stopper for when you twist the red thingy to fill it up? This way you don't have to hold the cartridge itself with the other hand.
That was my thought exactly. They definitely serve a functional purpose… it would not be worth the effort (and money) for them to do it otherwise.
Helpful, thanks!
Thank you
ohh good, I bought the right one! Thanks!
You didn't talk about the Al-Star... can I assume the Z28 fits an Al-Star?
@@unsharpen Thank you.
great video!
Thanks!
Soo TL:DR or more TL:DW: Z24/Z28 is more for collectors, right?
Fantastic, thank you.
I want to buy a lamy aion and studio pen but which converter should I buy? z26-z27?
Either will work. Z27 is the newer model
@@unsharpen oh, merci 😊
By the way, can the Lamy Z27 converter be used in a Lamy Al-star?
Yes
@@unsharpen Thank you for the response.
Thank you for that great info..
Thanks for stopping by!
great review very helpful
does a normal ink converter work in a safari?
You need a Lamy one because it’s a special size and shape
trim the tabs off and it will function as the Z 27 unless the tabs are hollow, then no
I purchased the wrong one by accident (I have a Lamy Logo and bought the Z 28, since I didn't know the difference) after watching this video and reading your comment I actually tried it. I took a small kitchen knife and trimmed the tabs off. After a quick leak check (filled it with clean water) it seems to be working perfectly.
@@SanderEvers Thanks for going where us lesser mortals fear to tread. I’ll give it a go. Regards, Al.
I'm just refilling the cartridge. The converters are terrible and they get crushed in shipping.
That works too
Z24 fits on Lamy abc
Quite right. I always forget about the ABC
You are right lamy z24/z28 exists so they make more money ...
which lamy fountain pen is this ?
That’s the CP1. unsharpen.com/lamy-ballpoint-pens-ranked/
you could just sand off the posts...
Very helpful. Thanks!
Thank you
