Gabriel this is my first visit to your channel. I just have to say I really like your presentation/style. I'm coming up on my 1 year CTR purchase anniversary and have so far resisted doing an ECU tune. You may have just convinced me to take the plunge!
KG_ONE R welcome to the family! Tune is the best bang for the buck. Thank you for the kudos and thank you for watching.
I have a 2017 type r with 400 miles bone stock. Thinking of getting this as my first upgrade. Thanks for making the video btw.
Christian Troy best bang for the buck for sure!
I'm just glad to see another Ktuner user. Like ALL the guys on the FB FK8 pages are all about Hondata. Nice vid man!
Matthew C Adrian thanks brotha. It's kind of like Apple vs Android. Both great products but I just like what I get with the a Ktuner that you don't get with the Hondata. Thanks for watching!
I was the same way when I tuned my 2.0t accord. Straight speechless. I wish I could of did this sooner.
Michael my hubby has a 400 plus FK8 , all done by Dream Automotive in UK, we fitted their own Rapped Race Cat and full 3 inch system But far to hoisy, so re fitted standard system with the cat , now sounds great plus ok for trackdays. all the best.
Carla Rigden great info and sounds like a fun car. I definitely have some plans for my FK8. Stay tuned and thanks for watching!
Great video Michael Baxi Media!! I am a new subscriber!! My 2019 Type R will be here in a month!! I cannot wait!! I have owned and 09’Si a ‘12 Si a 14’ Si a 17 Si and they have all been a different in their own way!! I am finally getting my Type R!! I cannot wait!! I have had amazing experience with Honda’s!! They are super reliable and they are fun and each time I traded mine in the Honda’s hold their value so well!! I look forward to watching more of your videos Michael!! Take care and God bless!!
Shaun Christensen congratulations! Very exciting. I've owned dozens of cars but more Hondas than anything else. I agree they are great cars. Thank you for watching.
Thank you I appreciate the response!! Hope to talk again soon!! God bless!!
Subbed.
Glad to see more content coming out for our CTRs.
Cant wait to tune my R, looks like its worth it, seeing how much it made you smile! Is your CTR stock?
Whoops, just watched the rest of the video. I was wanting the mish intake as well but with all the choices now im leaning more towards the PRL intake.
Regular Guy Airsoft PRL makes good products as well. Im kinda OCD in the sense that I like things to match as much as possible. I knew I was going to do the catchcan and probably the oil cooler down the road so I decided to go with the Intake as well. Thanks for watching!
If I’m to get the CTR, I would go with a PRL intercooler and Eventuri intake to start off. Ktuner to get a custom tune absolutely. Under 3200 pounds is impressive too especially for how big the car looks.
Francisco Gastelum the power to weight is really strong. The heaviest thing on the car are the 20 inch wheels. You can easily save 10lbs/corner.
Did you have to unlock your ecu before being able to flash with ktuner?
Robert Tang yes I did. Same procedure with Hondata as well
How well will it hold up over 40 50 thousand miles I know it's much harder on the motor ?
Hard to tell because the motor is so new. I’m hoping that some Toyota influence will mean this motor will run forever lol
New sub rite here 👍
Jason Boyle awesome thank you for watching and the sub. Welcome to the fam
what happens if i flash the ecu but dont used the recommended 91/93 octane?
PoonDestruction responded on other video
PoonDestruction you should be using 91 oct for that car. Specially in some states where the gas is already bad. I would not pump anything under 91.
Just bought a 2018 civic type r. How do I know if the ecu is unlocked
You won’t unless you have a tuning module to tell you it’s locked or you can have a dealership scan your ecu.
Do i need to mail my ECU to Ktuner before i can flash it ?
Yes you do. No way around it unfortunately. Same for Hondata
Can this system accommodate bolt ons? Perhaps a larger turbo even?
Travis Callahan it can accommodate any level of BPU. Not sure about turbo upgrades.
What is a good type R forum website for doing research. I've seen a couple like civicx.com or 10thtyper.com, but they don't have a ton of information like I was hoping for. What website has the best participation from owners?
John Garan what type of info were you looking for? I use Civicx.com myself but mostly I got more info by joining a local Facebook Type R club. Might be one for your area. You should check it out!
@@GridZilla Have you ever heard to not leave the car in gear with the parking brake engaged? The dealer said to never leave or in gear.
John Garan I always leave it in gear but I make sure I've got the parking brake on
I don't get it. What do you mean by unlocking? I have ktuner v2 which I got for my Si. I simply plugged it into the ecu and "paired it" with the vehicle. Went to my computer and uploaded a few tunes.. went back to my car and flashed that tune. What are we unlocking here? Is the type R ecu locked by the factory so that I wouldn't be able to plug in the Ktuner and just pair it with that and flash it? Because when its paired to my Si, I would have to "unlock" it or unpair it after putting back the factory tune on it so that I can put it into the Type R.
Ihor Omelyanskyy Type R ecu is different. You have to get it unlocked to use Ktuner or Hondata. Just recently however ( few days ago) Hondata Flashpro can not unlock the Type R ecu by plugging in. No longer a news the remove the ecu and send out
@@GridZilla oh damn.. that's interesting. So I would have to get it sent out and then I'd be able to use my ktuner v2? That blows.
Ihor Omelyanskyy yep or just get a Flashpro and you can unlock the ecu yourself without sending out
Do you experience notchy feel or cruncy when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear? Also, do you get good traction? Mine still stock on everything and doesnt get traction at all. Im in PA
almanu04 I experienced the 1-2 crunch once but honestly that was early in my ownership and I think it was more driver error than anything. Traction from a dead stop is not ever going to be good in this car without a lot of suspension tweaks which would include getting a smaller wheel with more sidewall. If you ever noticed the drag radials will have a really thick and soft sidewall to allow for "wrinkling" when accelerating off the line. Our cars come stock with 20 inch wheels and rubber bands for tires which are great for cornering but terrible for acceleration.
@@GridZilla Thanks for the response. It definitely shifts better if i pressed the clutch longer. Honestly Iam somewhat disappointed. I kept compairing it with my cla 45 amg, but theres no comparison with an awd and fwd. I hope the motor holds up with a ktuner coz this will be my daily driver.
almanu04 I sell CLA45's 😁 and I have driven both the CLA45 and the GLA45 on a Race track. Very impressive vehicles and while the CTR will not keep up 0-60 or 1/4 Mile, it's all CTR after that point or on a race track. Glory numbers are not what the CTR is about. It is a track ready affordable car that will be much cheaper to maintain than your CLA45. You made a great choice. As far as durability on the Ktuner tune. It is very conservative. I'm sure it will be fine for many years to come. The CLA45's on the other hand have had turbo failure because it is a bit too small for the boost demands they are asking for that engine. Do a quick search and you'll see what I mean and grats on your CTR! What color did you get?
Just got it 3 weeks ago. 2018 blue. Dealer sold it for 34k with 15 miles. I didnt want to pay 3k more for 2019 with just a volume knob upgrade. Lol. Do you know how to adjust the clutch master cylinder? I just wanted to try it if it helps getting rid of the notchy feeling. It does shifts better if i pressed the clutch longer, but i really dont want to shift like a granny.
almanu04 I have zero knowledge about how to replace the clutch matter cylinder but I'd say if your motivation is the alleviate the 1-2 crunch then I'd first start by getting it cataloged down with your servicing dealership. If you go back enough times with the same issue then they'll eventually replace the Trans. The few examples I've heard of that happening the issue with the crunch has gone away.
Can i get my ECU unlocked by Hondata but use Ktuner?
Sam Oh yes you can. I moved from Ktuner to Hondata
Nice
Thank you for watching
I have an 18 type r. If I do this tune does it void warranty?
Yes, in most cases mods will void warranty but also keep in mind that the burden is on the dealership to prove that the mod (whatever it is) caused whatever the potential warranty issue may be.
Do you have to send your ecu in to get it chipped?
Yes but it’s not to get “chipped”. It’s to unlock your ecu
I had a question do you have to send in your ecu every time you did an upgrade on your car? Like after you installed your remus exhaust did you have to send it again?
Forever Spider Gaming no just a one time thing
So how does k tuner know that I bought the one that comes with a free unlock? And where did you buy your tuner? Sorry for all the questions I’m a noob with no experience lol
Forever Spider Gaming just buy the Ktuner from a vendor. They notify Ktuner that you’ll be sending your ecu out
I see. Thanks so much brotha. One last question over this I was about to buy it today actually from prl but it was asking me about engine management and all engine/driveline related modifications and desired fuel type. Which I have no idea what any of that means
Forever Spider Gaming PRL is very helpful. Best thing to do is just call them
Did you send in your ECU with this video?
Yes I did.
Lol I saw the Hercules sign. I live in Pinole right around the corner just got my type r 2019 polish metal grey. If you see that one it’s probably me.
Neil Thomsen nice! Hello neighbor! 🙋🏽♂️
Where do you get yout Ktuner? Thanks
Nsx Van any number of online vendors. It won't be cheaper at any one place because Ktuner controls the pricing pretty well.
Also how much was the ECU unlock if you don’t mind me asking.
Pwnage4TheWin ecu unlock is included in the price of the Ktuner. $899
Awesome thank you so much! Definitely worth subbing too, congrats on the suede steering wheel btw. I’m currently working on purchasing a type r and seeing if I can gain some power for a daily. Great video👍🏼
Pwnage4TheWin thanks for the support and welcome to the fam
Are you completely stock? Running the ktuner?
In this Video I think I also have Exhaust
Do you still have your GT 350?
sagonzal2000 had to give it up. Was certainly a tough decision but given the circumstances I couldn't be happier with the CTR. If I get another GT350 in the future it will definitely be the R.
Hey man great video. How did the stage 0 tune affect your mpg?
28 mpg freeway 21ish combined
@@GridZilla is it lower than before? if so, how many?
@@gordonyip8415 Car was lowest with the Swift springs. Close to a full inch drop. With the ohlins and JRZ I had it at .5 inch drop or so
@@GridZilla Thanks . My question is related to mpg:)
@@gordonyip8415 probably a 3mpg difference on 91 octane tune
If you're doing track days, you will need more cooling mods before adding massive HP gains. Otherwise your car will overheat.
You have some catching up to do. This is an old video now 😉
@@GridZilla I watch them as they are recommended by youtube. lol I'm sure I've watched you newer videos too. I drive an STI and like Type R's, but don't own one. On my car I started with every cooling mod first before adding power, so I think my comment applies to multiple platforms. So many young guys want to just add power without thinking of cooling to keep the engines happy.
@@BushidoPhoto I agree that adding cooling before adding power especially for tracking is the smart way to do it. Having said that what I’ve found is there aren’t any amount of cooling mods the average consumer can buy off the shelf to keep the Type R from over heating of it is making more than stock power and being driven at the limit or close to if the ambient temperature outside is more than 73-75f.
Would you recommend hondata or ktuner v2 for daily?
Imlooking 4-work-atm one is not better for daily than the other.
0p0
I want to get the ktuner and do this but I had to buy the extended warranty and I fear risking parts of the warranty if I do this.
Kendogg of course the decision is always to your discretion. What I'll tell you is the dealership has to be able to prove that whatever you did to you vehicle was the cause for the failure. In other words it wouldn't make sense to not honor warranty work on your radio just because you tuned your vehicle. Some places are easier to deal with than others but at the end of the day the risk is all in your hands. I've been modding my cars for decades now. I've yet to run into a problem that "voided" any warranty work.
I know. I'm right there with you on it. I know if I have suspension issues, power windows, radio, etc, they can't void my warranty and say the tune caused it. My concerns would be the engine, drivetrain, turbo, fuel system, ecu, etc. I know that stuff would be at risk if I mod. And its hard to give up that extra money costing 72k/6 year warranty.
I modded my Evo X when it was practically new. I never had an issue needing warranty work except one time. The issue was the 6 disc cd changer had got jammed up. I took it to the Mitsubishi dealership because I figured it was a no brainer. These idiots said it wouldn't be under warranty because they "could see I have aftermarket gauges." That since I messed with the electrical system, the electronics wouldn't be warrantied. I could pay the diagnostic fee and repair and fight the case with Mitsu.
Aftermarket stuff is not suppose to void warranties. But you just never know. These dealerships seem to like to fight and argue with you about it. Even over little stuff. So if there is an issue with expensive big repairs, I have a feeling it won't go in the modded car owners favor.
Kendogg yeah that is a common tactic for dealerships, insurance companies, anyone trying to not spend money to fix an issue they are obligated to. Most of the time (you are correct) it works in their favor because now it's on you to push the issue far enough (small claims court?) but for most people, including myself is just not worth the effort
do u need any mods for this? can u tune the car stock or do i need to get some aftermarket parts? Thanks!
Joseph Green you can tune right from stock. You will need to send your ecu out to get unlocked though
@@GridZilla How does the stock car handle the power gains? Would i need to get a new clutch etc? or can i leave the car stock and not have any problems in the future? Thanks for ur quick response.
Joseph Green zero issues with power gains. You won't need to worry about replacing the clutch until you get really close to 400 wheel horse power
Where did you get a ktuner for the type r ?!
Gerardo Ortiz plenty of online vendors sell it. Pricing is controlled by ktuner so very unlikely to find it much cheaper from one place to another.
@@GridZilla I thought you had to send your ecu in to someone I ordered to tune the type r . I didn't know you could just plug in a ktuner and load the tunes yourself like on the si.
Gerardo Ortiz you do have to pull your ecu and ship it out to Ktuner. The cost of the Ktuner includes the unlocking of your ecu
@@GridZilla oohh ok gotcha , I thought so ..
Would you recommend ktuner over Hondata?
Gabriel both are great products and will produce similar results. I went with Ktuner V2 because you can load maps on the module and load from that onto the car ecu AND Ktuner has an app you can load into your car that gives you various gauges right on the Navi screen of your car.
Thanks man, great content!
Gabriel thank you! And thanks for following!
When will stage 2 be available?
Aslan Bach not sure if Ktuner is still developing this platform
I sent them an email asking them. They said it is in development. They said stage 2 won’t be available until we have a supported upgraded fuel system.
I can see the adrenaline in your facial expression haha
Is it a easy set up out of the box or na ?
Robby Wheeler relatively easy yes
@@GridZilla don't u have to jail break the ecu
Robby Wheeler yes you do
I’m looking at my door jam sticker.... GVWR 3880Lbs/1760KG. Front 2205lbs Rear 1764 LBS.....
Willy Pitty if you can find a friendly dump truck landfill area you can get your car weighed more accurately. Gvwr does not give you the weight of JUST the vehicle. That is the weight of the vehicle with a full tank of gas. Cargo and 4 passengers based on averages
does this mess with the adaptive dampers?
patryk jablonski not at all
Not even 800 miles and you're tuning it😁 Did you have to send the ECU off you get unlocked? Also, is there a way to flash a stage 1 on sport mode too? I think I'd like to have comfort more like stock and sport and r+ with that stage 1 that you had.
Joe Friday its a way of life my man. I've always tinkered with my cars 😬. Yes I did pull the ecu and shipped it off to Ktuner. Very quick turn around. Only takes 2 days if you over night to them. They can jailbreak and overnight same day. And yes you can definitely flash stage 1 for all drive modes. I just chose to flash the Multimode map as a demo. I'll probably reflash with Stage 1 for all modes soon though. The power is so much fun 😁
Joe Friday clarification... You cannot flash stage 1 to two drive modes and not the third with the available maps off the ktuner server. I'm sure if you enslaved then though they can build a time for you that can do that.
@@GridZilla Ah ok. I'd like sport and r+ to have the same power and comfort to be dialed back but if that's not an option then having all three the same would be fine. If you have some various bolt ons installed then how would the tune work then? Can the unit automatically readjust or would you have to take it to a shop for a custom tune?
Joe Friday great question. Same one I had for Ktuner when I called them... The canned tunes will work fine for any mods before and after the engine. In other words anything intake and exhaust wise, intercooler etc. Should be fine IF you live in California.
According to Ktuner the biggest limiting factor is the octane. In CA we only get 91 octane. You can only find the better stuff around race tracks for the most part. If you live in a part of the country that gets you 93+ then I would ask Ktuner but unless the Intake (for example) says you will need to tune the car then you should still be fine.
@@GridZilla Ah ok. I live in Alabama. It's hard to find 91 here. Almost all stations have 93.
Anti lag dude
corone2018 I like the idea of anti lag but with off the line traction challenges I feel like you wouldn't really realize the full potential of an anti lag system. Thanks for watching!
I thought our Type R is 3800 lbs.
Willy Pitty 3166 lbs
Why wouldn't Honda just do the same thing, and sell a faster car, if all it takes is programming?
Jamie Schultz warranty, durability, different price point, different insurance costs etc etc
@@GridZilla Great to see you like the results! Thanks for sharing this. 2 weeks into my 2019 CTR. Still haven't found the cornering limits. Serious machine, even stock. Of course more is ...better.
